RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) is a family of Video Services Forum (VSF) recommendations for carrying media reliably and with low latency across IP networks where packet loss and delay variation can interrupt a stream. It uses mechanisms such as retransmission-based recovery, and—depending on the profile and implementation—can also support forward error correction, link bonding, and additional transport and security functions.
RIST is a transport protocol, not a video codec or a consumer streaming service. “RIST-enabled” alone does not tell you which profile, revision, or functions a device supports, so check compatibility at both ends before building a workflow.
What RIST does—and what it does not do
RIST is designed to move media over unmanaged IP networks, including the public Internet, while addressing packet loss and variable delivery timing. It is intended for professional contribution and distribution workflows where reliable delivery and controlled latency matter.
The VSF’s TR-06-3:2024 introduction says the project was launched to address device incompatibility and define interoperability points. RIST specifies transport behavior; it does not choose your video codec, production format, or streaming destination. Those must be handled by the rest of the workflow.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practical terms, RIST can help a sender and receiver recover from network problems, but it cannot make a poor connection unlimitedly reliable or guarantee a particular end-to-end latency. Results depend on network conditions, configuration, and the recovery time available.
RIST profiles and current recommendation documents
Profiles describe capability groupings; TR-06 numbers and years identify recommendation documents and revisions. They are related, but not interchangeable. The VSF technical recommendations index, checked October 3, 2026, lists the following current profile documents:
| Profile or document family | Current listed document | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Profile | TR-06-1:2020 | ARQ-based recovery, jitter handling, multiple-link bonding, and optional FEC are described in the RIST Forum overview. |
| Main Profile | TR-06-2:2024 | The current VSF-listed Main Profile recommendation. Confirm the specific capabilities in the recommendation and the product implementation. |
| Advanced Profile | TR-06-3:2024 | Builds on TR-06-1 and TR-06-2 and describes capabilities including fragment recovery, compression, payload identification, authentication, and security. |
| Ancillary specifications | TR-06-4 parts, including some dated 2026 | Workflow-specific functions such as source adaptation, WireGuard VPN use, relays, decoder synchronization, multicast discovery, program selection, and hybrid broadcast/IP methods. |
The VSF index marks earlier Main and Advanced revisions deprecated. Use the current listed document when checking a product or planning an implementation. Some RIST Forum overview wording about Main Profile is outdated; it should not be taken to mean the current Main Profile is still in development.

Simple Profile
Simple Profile includes Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) for packet recovery and handling packet reordering and network-introduced jitter. The RIST Forum also lists point-to-point SMPTE 2022-2 services, bonding of multiple links, and optional SMPTE 2022-1 Forward Error Correction (FEC). A device may implement only a subset of the profile’s functions.
Main and Advanced Profiles
Main and Advanced are profiles, not successive names for document revisions. The VSF lists TR-06-2:2024 for Main and TR-06-3:2024 for Advanced. Advanced Profile adds expanded transport and security capabilities, but the exact functions available in a product still depend on its implementation.
How RIST handles packet loss and network variation
ARQ: request recovery
With ARQ, a receiver detects missing or reordered packets and can request that the sender retransmit data, subject to the configured recovery behavior and the time available. This can recover data that would otherwise be lost, but retransmission needs a usable return path and enough time in the workflow’s latency budget.

FEC: send recovery information in advance
Simple Profile can use optional FEC. Rather than relying only on a receiver request after loss is detected, FEC adds information that may help reconstruct missing data. It uses network capacity, and whether it is appropriate depends on the link and workflow.
Bonding: use multiple links
RIST’s Simple Profile overview includes bonding of multiple links. How packets are handled across links depends on the implementation and chosen mode; bonding is not by itself a guarantee that any combination of connections will improve delivery. Confirm link behavior, available bandwidth, and failure handling in the endpoints you plan to use.

The TR-06-4 family extends the specifications for particular workflows; its functions should not be assumed to be baseline capabilities in every RIST endpoint. Examples include synchronization for multi-encoder and multi-decoder live-event workflows, and multicast discovery intended to avoid sending multicast streams to receivers that do not need them.
Hybrid broadcast and Internet recovery
A 2026 RIST Forum announcement describes TR-06-4 Part 9, “RIST OTA-Hybrid: IP Transport Method,” as using Internet recovery for corrupted or lost data alongside an over-the-air RTP transport, with ATSC 3.0 as an example. The announcement also cites satellite-hybrid work. These are specified use cases and demonstrations, not evidence that every broadcast deployment uses these methods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What equipment or software do you need?
A RIST workflow needs compatible sending and receiving endpoints, but a dedicated hardware encoder or decoder is not mandatory for every use case. Software can also provide RIST functionality. For example, GStreamer documents a ristsink transmitter implementing TR-06-1 Simple Profile and part of TR-06-2 Main Profile. Its documented implementation excludes tunneling, multiplexing, and encryption, illustrating why a generic RIST label does not establish feature parity.

The RIST Forum’s April 14, 2026 announcement names the Magewell Ultra Encode HDMI Plus among products updated to support RIST. That identifies a hardware example, not a recommendation or evidence of current stock, price, or marketplace availability. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and the receiving endpoint before purchasing.
Checklist: verify a RIST implementation before choosing it
- Profile and revision: Identify whether each endpoint supports Simple, Main, or Advanced Profile and which TR recommendation revision it implements.
- Required functions: Check for the specific ARQ behavior, FEC, bonding, tunneling, encryption or authentication, multicast, relay, and synchronization functions your workflow requires.
- Endpoint interoperability: Confirm that sender and receiver support compatible functions in common. The protocol’s interoperability goal does not mean every product exposes the same subset.
- Network path: Check return-path availability for retransmission, firewall and NAT behavior, bandwidth, and the recovery window your workflow can tolerate.
- Media and signaling: Confirm the transport stream or RTP-based media format, signaling requirements, and whether you need a gateway or a separate encoder or decoder.
- Test the actual route: Evaluate the intended network and configuration; a general “low latency” claim does not establish the latency or recovery result you will get in deployment.
