You can use Vimeo to simulcast a live event to YouTube, and Vimeo has a separate extended-streaming mode for continuous video—but Vimeo says extended streams cannot simulcast to other destinations. That means Vimeo’s documented features do not provide a verified way to play prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube 24/7. If continuous YouTube playback is the goal, use a service that sends the stream directly to YouTube, or use YouTube’s encoder workflow with a suitable cloud encoder. Vimeo remains useful for scheduled or one-off prerecorded live events, but those are not the same as a continuous 24/7 YouTube stream.
Why Vimeo’s 24/7 mode does not meet this exact goal
There are two distinct Vimeo capabilities that can sound like the same thing:
- YouTube simulcasting: Vimeo can send a live event to YouTube, either by connecting a YouTube account or by using YouTube RTMP credentials. Vimeo’s documented eligibility is Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events.
- Extended streaming: Vimeo’s documented continuous mode lets an encoder send video 24/7, but it requires an Enterprise add-on, works only with RTMP, and disables recording and DVR.
The limitation that matters is explicit in Vimeo’s Extended Streaming FAQ: “No, simulcasting to other destinations is not available for extended streams.” So while Vimeo supports each capability separately, its documented setup does not combine continuous extended streaming with a YouTube destination. Do not treat a normal Vimeo event or scheduled prerecorded event as proof of a supported 24/7 YouTube simulcast.
These are Vimeo and YouTube product instructions, not India-specific availability or pricing information. The available guidance does not establish whether every Vimeo plan or add-on is offered to every customer in India; check current terms with Vimeo before purchasing.

What Vimeo can do with prerecorded video
Play an uploaded video as a live event
On an eligible Vimeo plan, an owner can choose Stream live from an uploaded video and use that file as the content of a live event. This is a way to present a prerecorded video as a live event; it is not documented as continuous, unattended 24/7 YouTube playback. Vimeo also notes that captions or subtitles uploaded with the video are not shown during this video-as-live playback.
Schedule prerecorded video to start automatically
Vimeo’s web-based production tool has a separate workflow for scheduling prerecorded content to start automatically. Vimeo says that automated prerecorded-event feature is unavailable when using an external encoder. This scheduled-event function still does not establish a continuous 24/7 YouTube simulcast.

Simulcast a Vimeo live event to YouTube
For an ordinary event, Vimeo documents two ways to add YouTube as a destination:
- Connect the YouTube account: In the Vimeo event’s Destinations panel, connect the YouTube account and select it as a destination.
- Use YouTube RTMP credentials: Add a YouTube RTMP destination in Vimeo, then enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. For a scheduled YouTube RTMP event, Vimeo says the creator must also click Go Live manually in YouTube Live Control Room.
These steps apply to Vimeo event simulcasting, not Vimeo extended streaming. They do not remove the 24/7-mode restriction.

- Make sure the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the intended launch.
- Create or schedule the YouTube live event. Use YouTube’s live controls to create a stream or schedule an event, then locate its server URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to that event. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL.
- Set compatible video and audio output. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes H.264 and other supported codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes at the recommended two-second interval and no more than four seconds apart, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements for the exact format and bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate; a single bitrate figure is not appropriate for every stream.
- Start sending, then check the preview. Start the encoder and confirm that the video and audio appear in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the stream. For a scheduled Vimeo-to-YouTube RTMP event, Vimeo specifically says the creator must click Go Live in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Plan for continuity. Check that the encoder or service can recover from an interrupted connection, monitor audio and video, and test any failover arrangement before leaving the stream unattended.
Bandwidth, stream keys, and content checks
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends that available upload capacity exceed the combined outgoing bitrate and that you retain 20% headroom. This is general platform guidance, not a measurement of Indian internet speeds. A home-based encoder depends on the local connection remaining stable; a brief outage can interrupt the feed. Preview the stream and test failover rather than assuming the connection will hold indefinitely.
Protect the stream key
Treat the YouTube stream key as a credential. Put it only into the encoder or service that will send the stream, avoid sharing screenshots that expose it, and replace it in YouTube if it is disclosed. When diagnosing a connection problem, confirm that the encoder is using the key for the correct event.

Use video you have rights to stream
Before scheduling a long-running channel, make sure you have the necessary rights for the video, music, performances, and other material in the playlist. A prerecorded loop is still a public YouTube broadcast; using content without the relevant rights can lead to copyright problems. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules as well, particularly if the channel’s content is substantially reused or repetitive. These checks are separate from whether the encoder can technically keep sending video.
Troubleshooting a continuous YouTube stream
- Vimeo extended stream has no YouTube destination: This is the documented limitation, not a missing configuration step. Use Vimeo for a standard simulcast event, or choose a direct-to-YouTube route for continuous playback.
- Vimeo event is not appearing on YouTube: Confirm that the YouTube account or RTMP destination is selected in Vimeo’s Destinations panel, and verify that the RTMP URL and key belong to the intended YouTube event.
- YouTube shows a preview but the event is not live: For a scheduled YouTube RTMP event created through Vimeo, click Go Live in YouTube Live Control Room as Vimeo directs.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and live-streaming restrictions. If live streaming was enabled for the first time recently, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- The stream drops or stutters: Check available upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect the encoder’s connection and recovery behavior. Test failover before depending on unattended operation.
- Video is visible but audio is missing or wrong: Check that the encoder is sending a supported audio format such as AAC or MP3, then monitor the YouTube preview for both sound and picture before leaving the stream running.
- Prerecorded Vimeo playback lacks captions: Vimeo says captions or subtitles uploaded with the video are not shown during its video-as-live playback. Plan an alternative if captions are required.
