Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg as the encoder to send your video file to it in real time. Scheduling creates the upcoming event and its watch page; it does not start playback by itself. You must start FFmpeg, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and—unless auto-start is enabled—select Go live.
Before you schedule: check live-stream access
If this is your first time streaming, enable live streaming on your YouTube account ahead of time. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check account readiness before planning an event around a fixed start time. YouTube’s live-streaming help explains the current requirements.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select Schedule stream.
- Reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new event. Set the title, visibility, date, and start time, then save.
- Copy the event’s watch-page URL if you want to share it. Scheduling lets viewers get reminders, but the video will not begin playing merely because the event is scheduled.
Exact labels and available options can change. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the current scheduling flow.
Get the stream URL and protect the stream key
In the event’s Live Control Room settings, copy the stream URL and stream key for the ingestion protocol you plan to use. The key functions like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Keep it out of screenshots, public scripts, logs, and source control. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it wherever your encoder uses it. YouTube explains stream keys and encoder connection details in its live-streaming help.

Use the precise ingest URL YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it; do not assume that an endpoint or key from an older event or example is appropriate for the current event. Protocols and supported settings can change, so check YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations before configuring FFmpeg.
Choose an FFmpeg output profile
Match the output to your file, your connection, and YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. Consult YouTube’s current profile-specific guidance for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe recommendations, then test the actual output before an important event. Your upload connection needs reliable headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate.

- Transcode: Re-encoding lets you select a compatible video and audio codec and control output settings. It uses CPU or GPU resources and can alter the source’s quality.
- Stream copy: Copying avoids re-encoding, but is suitable only when the source codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube’s ingest requirements are compatible. If they are not, FFmpeg may fail or YouTube may reject the feed.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when supported and use the endpoint supplied for the event. Other protocols may suit specific codecs or features, but require checking YouTube’s current protocol instructions rather than adapting this ordinary file-to-encoder workflow by guesswork.
Start FFmpeg at the planned time
For a file input, FFmpeg’s -re option reads at the file’s native frame rate instead of consuming the file as quickly as possible. That pacing is what lets a prerecorded file act as a live-like encoder input. FFmpeg documents -re, RTMP output, and FLV muxing in its command-line documentation.
The following is an illustrative template, not a guaranteed command for every FFmpeg build or source file. Replace the path and destination with your own values, and use the exact URL and secret key from YouTube. Confirm option order and available encoders in your installed FFmpeg version; some builds do not include libx264.

-f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY>"The template deliberately omits video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval: choose those to match your intended profile and YouTube’s current recommendations. For multiple audio or video tracks, add an explicit stream map so FFmpeg sends the intended tracks. A file that needs scaling, different audio handling, or different timestamps may also require source-specific options.
Stream-copying is a different approach, not a universal shortcut. It may work when the existing streams are already compatible with the selected ingest setup; if you use it, verify the source and destination compatibility rather than assuming a container extension guarantees it. Check the preview and start the event
- Start FFmpeg early enough to allow time for the feed to reach Live Control Room.
- Wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the event has the intended watch-page access.
- Select Go live for the scheduled event when the preview is ready, unless you have deliberately enabled and tested auto-start.
- Monitor stream health while the event is running. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring quality; see its encoder guide.
A scheduled event and an automated operating-system job are separate things. YouTube Studio schedules the event; FFmpeg sends the feed. Starting FFmpeg automatically at a particular time requires a separate scheduler or wrapper, which does not itself guarantee the event will transition from preview to live. If you need unattended starts, test both the process launch and the event’s auto-start behavior in advance.

When finished, stop FFmpeg from sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Help currently says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this platform behavior can change, so check the current YouTube live-streaming help before relying on automatic archiving, especially for a long event.

Troubleshooting common problems
- No incoming preview: Check that FFmpeg is still running, the destination uses the event’s current stream URL and key, and the selected protocol matches the endpoint. Look for connection or encoder errors in FFmpeg’s output.
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Confirm that the file path exists and is readable, the command’s quoting is correct, and the installed build includes the requested encoders. Try the input locally without streaming to isolate file or codec problems.
- Video or audio is missing: Inspect the source’s tracks and add explicit stream mapping if it contains multiple tracks. Confirm that the selected codecs and output format match YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
- Playback runs too fast or the event ends early: For a file used as a live input, include
-reso FFmpeg reads at native frame rate. Check that the source duration and any wrapper or scheduled stop time are as intended. - Unstable quality or dropped frames: Compare the chosen profile’s bitrate with the reliable upload capacity of the sending connection. Reduce output demands or choose a suitable profile within YouTube’s current recommendations, then test again.
- Preview appears but the event is not public/live: Check whether the event requires a manual Go live action. Auto-start changes the workflow, so verify its setting rather than assuming the scheduled time starts the broadcast.
- Authentication or connection fails after a key change: Update FFmpeg with the current key and endpoint. Reset a compromised key in Live Control Room and do not reuse the exposed value.
