To change what viewers see, build a broadcast layout with scenes and sources in OBS Studio, or install a stream overlay and widget theme in Streamlabs. These are different from the OBS application theme: that setting changes the streamer’s interface, not the broadcast. The right method depends on whether you want to assemble graphics yourself or start with a prebuilt design.
First, decide what “theme” means
- Streaming-app appearance: Changes the controls and colors you see while working. OBS Studio’s Theme setting is this kind.
- Viewer-facing design: The graphics, camera frames, text, alerts, and other elements in the broadcast. In OBS, you compose these with scenes and sources; Streamlabs calls its prebuilt graphics overlays and its styled alerts and chat widget themes.
A theme can make a stream more coherent, but the sources cited here do not establish that themes increase viewership, retention, or revenue. Choose a design for readability and fit, not as a performance guarantee.
Change the OBS Studio interface theme
Use this only if you want to change how OBS looks on your computer. It does not add graphics to the live broadcast.
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Choose General.
- Under Theme, select a built-in theme or a custom theme you have installed, then apply the change.
The OBS Themes Guide identifies Yami as the default beginning with OBS Studio 28. Available choices can depend on the version and installed themes; choosing a different interface theme changes the application controls, not the scenes viewers see. See the OBS Themes Guide.

Build a viewer-facing theme in OBS Studio
OBS treats the broadcast as a composition: a scene contains sources, and you can switch between scenes with transitions. This gives you direct control over what appears, but you assemble and arrange the pieces yourself.
- Create or select a scene. In the Scenes panel, create a scene for a broadcast moment such as gameplay, a starting screen, or a break. Names are for your own organization.
- Add sources. In Sources, add the elements you want viewers to see, such as a camera, image, text, browser window, or capture card. Arrange the sources in the scene so they serve the content rather than obscure it.
- Build only the screens you need. A gameplay scene and a break scene may be enough; add other scenes only when they serve a real purpose. A graphic bundle is not a checklist of mandatory elements.
- Choose scene transitions. Set how OBS changes between scenes, then check that the transition suits the pacing and style of your broadcast.
- Preview before going live. Use Studio Mode to preview scene or source changes before taking them live. This helps catch misplaced or unwanted elements before viewers see them.
OBS’s official overview describes scenes, sources, transitions, Studio Mode, plugins, and scripts. It does not prescribe one set of source dimensions or performance settings for every computer and broadcast, so check your actual composition rather than assuming a theme will fit unchanged. Install an overlay and widget theme in Streamlabs
Streamlabs separates the overlay—the larger visual layout—from widget themes, which style elements such as alerts and chat. Its library includes designs for horizontal and vertical formats. Pick an orientation that matches the output you intend to use, and select only the components relevant to your stream.
- Choose a matching overlay. In the Streamlabs theme library, filter or browse by keyword, color, and matching widgets. Check the format and visual style against your content before installing.
- Select and install. Use the library’s Select and Install flow for the design you want. A bundle may include starting, BRB, ending, live-scene, webcam-frame, label, alert, event-list, chat, or goal elements; use the pieces that fit rather than adding every component.
- Customize the widgets. Adjust the widgets through the Streamlabs dashboard. If you use Streamlabs’ integrated software, add the relevant elements as sources; in other streaming software, use the supplied browser-source URLs where applicable.
- Check the scene collection. In Streamlabs Desktop, make sure the selected scene collection is associated with the widget theme you expect. A mismatch can leave alerts or chat styled incorrectly.
- Test the finished layout. Preview the scenes and widgets in the software you plan to stream with, checking that the right elements appear in the intended orientation.
If you want different alert and chat styles, Streamlabs documents combining widget links as browser sources or creating a custom theme. That adds setup complexity, so it is most useful when the standard matched set does not meet a specific need. Streamlabs says its alert themes support Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook, Patreon, Tiltify, and some Streamlabs services; check current compatibility for the destination and product version you use. Choose OBS scene composition if you want hands-on control and a layout assembled from your own sources. Choose a Streamlabs library theme if a prebuilt overlay and coordinated widget styling are a better starting point. You can also use browser sources in other streaming software where the relevant widget supports them.
Are stream themes free?
Some are, but access depends on the product and current terms. Streamlabs says basic features are free, many library themes are free, and optional Ultra includes premium overlays and full-library access. The cited OBS sources do not establish a price for OBS themes. Check each product’s current terms before building a setup around a paid asset or feature.

Common theme problems and fixes
- You changed OBS’s theme, but the broadcast looks the same: That setting changes OBS’s interface only. Add or adjust scene sources for viewer-facing graphics.
- An overlay does not fit the broadcast: Confirm that you chose an asset for the intended horizontal or vertical format, then review the scene composition in your streaming software.
- Alerts or chat have the wrong style in Streamlabs Desktop: Check that the current scene collection is associated with the widget theme you meant to use.
- A widget is missing in other streaming software: Confirm that you added the relevant browser-source URL as a source and that the widget is compatible with your destination.
- A layout feels crowded: Remove bundle components you do not need and keep only the elements that help viewers follow the content.
