OBS Studio is the best all-around starting point for game recording if you want local files, multiple sources, audio controls, adjustable scenes, and the option to stream. Radeon owners may prefer the capture workflow built into AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, while Steam Game Recording suits players who want background capture for games played through the Steam Client. There is no verified performance or image-quality winner for every PC; choose by workflow, hardware, and how much control you need.
Which game recorder fits your setup?
| Tool | Best fit | What is established | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Full-session recording, multiple sources, audio control, scenes, or recording and streaming from one production setup | Free and open source; records locally and supports game, desktop, webcam, video-file, and capture-card sources, along with audio mixing, filters, hotkeys, and scenes. OBS Project and its Steam listing describe these capabilities. | Its depth means setup is less automatic than an integrated capture tool. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Radeon owners who want to capture in-game moments through AMD’s software | AMD describes its Media and Capture section as a way to capture favorite in-game moments. See the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition page. | Exact clip limits, encoder choices, supported models, and relative performance are not established here; check support for your installed hardware and software. |
| Steam Game Recording | Gameplay through the Steam Client, with background capture and timeline review | Valve says it records gameplay in the background for games played through the Steam Client. Its Steam Game Recording support page says supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards remove most of the cost of creating recordings; other systems use the CPU, which may have a noticeable performance impact. | It is tied to Steam Client gameplay. The hardware-cost guidance is Valve’s product guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
These are workflow recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison. The available documentation does not establish which tool produces the best image, the highest frame rate, or the lowest performance impact on a given PC.
How to choose the right recording workflow
Choose what you want to save
- Complete sessions or planned videos: OBS gives you a configurable local recording and can combine gameplay with a webcam, other video sources, and separately managed audio.
- Moments without setting up a production scene: AMD Adrenalin is worth considering if you have supported Radeon hardware and want to use AMD’s in-game capture workflow.
- Gameplay you want to revisit from a timeline: Steam Game Recording is aimed at background capture of games played through the Steam Client.
- Gameplay from a console: You may need a capture card or a supported console-to-PC streaming path; OBS explains the options in its console capture guide.
Check hardware and operating-system fit
OBS publishes baseline operating-system and hardware guidance, but compatibility alone does not guarantee a smooth recording. Its System Requirements page warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page was published on 2021-08-25, so verify current requirements for the release you install. Actual capability also depends on the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity.
On laptops with integrated and discrete GPUs, OBS and the game may end up on different graphics processors. OBS notes that this can prevent Game Capture from working, reduce performance, or, rarely, cause crashes. Its GPU Selection Guide, published 2023-04-24, gives the Windows 10 (version 1809 and later) and Windows 11 path as Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings to select the GPU for an app. Windows labels can change, so check the current interface if that path differs on your system.

Set up OBS for a local game recording
OBS is the most adjustable option in this comparison. The right settings depend on your PC, game, target resolution, and available storage; there is no single bitrate or encoder preset that can be recommended as a proven best setting for every system. Start with a short test recording, then adjust quality and load based on the result.
- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site. Check the current system requirements before installing.
- Create a scene: in the Scenes panel, add a scene for the game. Under Sources, add a Game Capture source where it works. Add other sources only if needed, such as a webcam, microphone, or capture device.
- Check audio: use OBS’s audio mixer to confirm the game and microphone are present at sensible levels. Make a short test and listen back; a source showing activity in the mixer does not by itself confirm that the saved file sounds right.
- Choose a recording destination and settings in OBS’s output and video settings. Select an encoder available on your system, and set the resolution and FPS to a level your PC can record while running the game. OBS documents that performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; the documentation cited here does not establish universal bitrate, keyframe, or encoder values.
- Record a representative test: use the same game, scene, and settings you expect to use. Review both playback and system behavior. If the game stutters or the recording drops frames, reduce the recording workload—for example, lower output resolution or FPS, simplify the scene, or try another available encoder.
- Record the session and verify the file before deleting or moving source footage. Check that the file opens, the audio is in sync, and the intended sources were captured.
Record console gameplay on a PC
OBS’s console guide describes two routes: use a game capture device as a Video Capture Source, or capture Window Capture from PS Remote Play or the Xbox app when it is streaming console gameplay to the PC. A network-based route depends on a fast console-to-PC connection for optimal quality.

When a capture card makes sense
A USB game capture card is a relevant accessory when you need to bring a console’s video into the computer for OBS. Check the exact device’s host-operating-system support, console output, resolution and frame-rate support, passthrough, and connection requirements before buying. OBS names Elgato, AVerMedia, Razer Ripsaw, EVGA XR1, and Hauppauge HD PVR Pro as examples; that list is not a current product ranking.
For macOS or Linux, OBS recommends a UVC capture card. Its guide says Nintendo Switch systems work when docked; Switch Lite is not compatible with that setup because it cannot be docked. A capture card is not a default purchase for PC-only game recording: try software capture first if the game already runs on the recording computer.

Troubleshooting recording problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Game Capture shows no game on a laptop | OBS and the game may be using different GPUs. | Use the Windows graphics settings path in OBS’s GPU Selection Guide to select the appropriate GPU for OBS, then reopen OBS and test again. |
| Game stutters while recording | The chosen encoder, resolution, FPS, or scene complexity may exceed what the system can handle smoothly. | Lower recording resolution or FPS, simplify the scene, or test another available encoder. Change one setting at a time and compare short recordings. |
| Steam recording affects gameplay performance | Valve says systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards use the CPU to create recordings, which may have a noticeable impact. | Check Valve’s Steam Game Recording guidance. Consider a different recording workflow if the impact is unacceptable; no independent comparative measurement is established here. |
| Console footage is missing or looks poor | The capture-card connection or console-to-PC network path may not suit the host, output, or desired quality. | Confirm the exact device supports your OS and console output. For remote-play capture, check the network connection between console and PC; OBS says a faster connection is important for optimal quality. |
| File has the wrong sources or unusable audio | The scene, source selection, or audio levels may not match the intended recording. | Before a long session, make and review a short test with the same game, scene, and audio sources. |
Copyright and publishing considerations
Recording software captures what you configure; it does not grant rights to publish the game footage, soundtrack, or other material in the recording. Check the game’s and any included music’s applicable permissions before uploading or monetizing a video. For live broadcasts, OBS’s ability to send a stream does not override the platform’s rules or rights-holder restrictions.
