To live stream on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and enable live streaming early. Then choose a phone, webcam, encoder or supported console based on what you want to show. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the day of your broadcast.
Before you start: check your channel’s eligibility
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says you must be at least 16, verify your channel and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming well before the event. YouTube’s live-streaming overview has the current general requirements.
Mobile streaming has an additional requirement: at least 50 subscribers, as well as channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. The 50-subscriber threshold applies to the mobile method; it is not the general eligibility threshold for every way to go live. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions for current details.
Choose the method that fits what you want to broadcast
| Method | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates or vlogging from a phone or tablet | YouTube app and a mobile-eligible channel, including the 50-subscriber minimum. |
| Webcam | A straightforward broadcast from a computer camera | A computer with a webcam; YouTube’s guidance also covers webcam and software-encoding options. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external camera and audio equipment | Streaming software or a hardware encoder, configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. |
| Console | Broadcasting directly from a supported game console | A supported console; follow the console maker’s broadcast instructions. |
You do not need to buy expensive equipment to begin. Choose the simplest method that shows what you need: a phone for a quick update, a webcam for a direct computer broadcast, or an encoder when you need gameplay capture, screen sharing, overlays or external gear. YouTube describes the available options in its live-streaming overview.

How do I live stream on YouTube with an encoder?
An encoder is a good fit for gaming or screen sharing because it sends a prepared audio-video feed to YouTube. Labels can change, but the standard setup is through YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Enable live streaming and verify the channel. Complete this in advance; first activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the stream. Choose Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Set the title, audience and privacy, and other stream details. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share, where viewers can set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose privacy deliberately. YouTube offers public, private and unlisted visibility. Select the option that suits your audience before sharing the watch page. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Paste them into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share or display it. If it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio. YouTube explains the connection flow in its encoder setup guide and key security in its stream settings help.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Check that the picture and sound are correct before clicking Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends its feed; the preview lets you catch framing, audio or source problems before viewers see the broadcast.
- End the broadcast using the encoder and YouTube flow. Confirm the stream has ended in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. See the encoder guide.
Test your connection, picture and sound
Upload speed is the capacity for sending video from your connection to YouTube. Compare it with the encoder’s total bitrate and leave at least 20% headroom, as YouTube recommends. If your bitrate nearly fills the available upload capacity, other network use or fluctuations can cause interruptions. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and stream quality.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Do a test with the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and equipment you intend to use.
- Include representative movement and speech: a static screen can conceal problems that appear during gameplay or camera motion.
- Check YouTube’s preview, stream health and audio/video quality before and during the broadcast.
- For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes early. Use the lead time to check the preview and resolve issues, not to expose a test to the intended audience. See YouTube’s event streaming tips.
A USB microphone is optional, not a requirement. You can add external microphones and other audio/video equipment to an encoder setup if you need better spoken audio or more control; start with the equipment you already have.
Can I live stream on YouTube from my phone?
Yes, if your channel meets YouTube’s mobile requirements: at least 50 subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. Open the YouTube app and use its create flow to start a live broadcast, then choose the stream details and visibility. The app’s available labels may change; consult YouTube’s mobile guide for the current steps.

If you do not meet the mobile subscriber threshold, consider a webcam or encoder instead, provided your channel meets the general live-streaming requirements. A phone remains the simplest option when you want to broadcast directly from the device and your channel is eligible.
Troubleshooting common first-stream problems
- You cannot find or start live streaming: verify the channel, check for restrictions in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours after first enabling the feature. For mobile, also check the 50-subscriber minimum.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that you copied the server URL and stream key from the correct stream in Live Control Room and pasted each into the matching encoder field. If the key may have been exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use it.
- The preview is black or shows the wrong content: confirm the encoder is sending the intended camera, game or screen source, then restart the encoder feed and check the preview again before clicking Go live.
- The stream buffers or drops: compare total bitrate with available upload bandwidth, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce competing network use. Retest at the intended settings and monitor stream health.
- Viewers cannot access the broadcast: check whether the stream is public, private or unlisted. A private stream is not publicly viewable; an unlisted stream is accessible to people with its link.
- You expected a recording but do not see an archive: YouTube says automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours. Check Live Control Room and your channel’s live content after the stream ends.
Copyright and audience expectations
Only broadcast material you have the rights or permission to use, including music, gameplay audio and video clips. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos; review its copyright guidance before using third-party content. A live broadcast can also be subject to YouTube’s policies and enforcement, so do not assume that permission to use a track or clip in one context covers a live stream.
