Recommended Free Tools
Yes. OBS Studio is free to download and use, including commercially; the OBS Project says it has no watermark or usage limits. But running a YouTube stream around the clock is not necessarily cost-free: your computer, electricity, internet connection, and any optional cloud service are separate expenses. OBS runs on your system and sends the stream to YouTube—it does not provide streaming servers.
What OBS being free does—and does not—mean
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as open-source software under GPLv2 and says it is free for any purpose, with no watermark or usage limitations. It also warns that requests to pay for OBS are scams. Donations are optional support for the project, not a required license fee. OBS Project licensing information.
That free software license does not pay for the equipment or services required to keep a broadcast running. For a 24/7 setup, account for the computer and its electricity, internet service with adequate upload capacity, possible backup hardware, and any optional cloud streaming service. The cost of those items depends on your setup and location; no standard total can be inferred from OBS’s price.
How OBS connects to YouTube
OBS is an encoder running on your computer, not a hosted streaming service. In YouTube’s encoder setup, you connect OBS using a YouTube Live server URL and stream key. The stream travels from your computer to YouTube; OBS says it does not provide servers in that path. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and OBS streaming guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Enable YouTube live streaming. You may need to activate the feature first. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream, then copy its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server details if requested by the selected connection method. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure and test the encoder. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the connection and content you intend to stream. Run a test and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Start streaming and monitor it. OBS must remain running on a computer with sufficient processing capacity, power, and internet upload for the selected workload.
Settings that affect a continuous stream
YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its published recommended bitrates include the following figures. They are encoder recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain the stream continuously. YouTube live encoder settings.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube also lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; RTMPS is recommended for encrypted delivery to YouTube’s servers. Check YouTube’s current settings guidance for codec-specific requirements rather than applying H.264 bitrate values to AV1 or H.265.

- Upload capacity: Test the actual upload bitrate from the location where the computer will run. Leave headroom for network variation rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
- Encoder load: The required CPU or hardware encoder capacity depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity. Test with motion and audio similar to the intended stream.
- Stream health: Check YouTube’s live control room during a test and broadcast. A successful connection at launch does not establish that a local computer or network will remain available indefinitely.
Is your computer suitable for 24/7 OBS streaming?
OBS’s system requirements page explicitly cautions that meeting its basic operating-system and hardware requirements does not guarantee capacity for a particular recording or stream. Workload matters: encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect resource use. The page, dated August 25, 2021, lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. Because that compatibility list is dated, verify current OBS requirements before buying equipment. OBS system requirements.
A machine that can launch OBS may still be unsuitable for a particular 24/7 workload. Assess sustained encoding load, cooling, power reliability, and the consequences of a computer or home-internet outage. OBS itself does not promise recovery if your computer or connection fails.

What YouTube’s archive rule does not guarantee
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee that a stream running for 12 hours or longer will be archived, nor does it mean a broadcast will stay uninterrupted. If an archive matters, plan for stream duration and recording separately from the question of whether OBS is free. YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Copyright, monetization, and live eligibility
Free encoding software does not grant rights to the video or audio you broadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s policies and any licenses that apply to your content. Repeatedly looping a recording does not itself establish that you have permission to use it or that it qualifies for monetization. YouTube says monetization is available to creators in the YouTube Partner Program; OBS’s commercial-use permission is separate from YouTube eligibility and content rights.

Troubleshooting a continuous OBS broadcast
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Check whether live streaming is enabled for the channel. If this is the first activation, YouTube says it may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Check the selected server URL and stream key in OBS, confirm the stream is active in YouTube Studio, and verify that the computer has an internet connection. If you regenerate the key, update the encoder with the new one.
- Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems: Test upload from the streaming location, lower output bitrate or quality if the connection cannot sustain it, and run another test before going live for a long period.
- Video stutters or encoding overload appears: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, or use an encoder the computer can sustain. Re-test under the intended workload; basic OBS system requirements alone do not prove capacity.
- The broadcast stops when the computer or internet fails: OBS runs locally, so it cannot keep sending video through a powered-off computer or unavailable connection. Restore the system and connection, then reconnect from YouTube Studio and OBS.
- A long stream has no archive: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise archiving for longer broadcasts.
