If a prerecorded video must keep playing, turn off autoplay, choose the lowest available resolution that still works for your purpose, and compare the power use of your complete setup before and after changes. There is no established universal wattage or savings figure for YouTube playback: results depend on the display, playback device, settings, and viewing conditions.
Start by deciding whether playback needs to continue
If the video does not need to run continuously, stop it or use your TV, computer, or other device’s sleep timer. YouTube’s autoplay control can stop a related video from starting after the current one ends, but it does not turn off the screen or playback device. Exact sleep-timer menus vary by model and operating system; check the device manual for the right steps.
YouTube’s “Continue watching?” prompt may pause playback unless you respond. Its timing varies by client, so it is not a dependable substitute for a sleep timer or turning the device off. See YouTube’s explanation of the “Continue watching?” prompt.
Turn off autoplay on the device you use
YouTube provides device-specific autoplay controls for mobile devices, computers, TVs and game consoles, and casting. The available steps can differ by device and app version; use YouTube’s current instructions for your setup: Autoplay videos.

Autoplay is useful to disable when you want one selected video to end without another related video starting. It will not reduce power while the current video is playing, and it will not shut down the display.
Lower video quality only as far as the use allows
When playback must continue, manually select the lowest available resolution that remains legible and useful. YouTube’s quality choices vary with the video, connection speed, player or screen size, and browser or device support; a particular resolution may not be offered in every case. Follow YouTube’s instructions to change the quality of your video.

YouTube’s help information explains how to change quality, but it does not quantify the electricity saved by choosing a lower resolution. Treat this as a setting worth testing on your own setup, not as a guaranteed energy-saving percentage.
Adjust TV picture settings cautiously
For a TV, begin with its default picture setting. The U.S. Department of Energy says the default picture setting is the one used to earn the ENERGY STAR label. That U.S.-oriented guidance does not establish that every TV’s default is best for every room or viewer. If you change brightness or picture mode, check whether the resulting image remains comfortable and measure your own set rather than assuming a particular setting will save a fixed amount.

Disable Ambient mode if you do not want the effect
YouTube Ambient mode casts colors from the video into the surrounding screen background. If you do not want that effect, turn it off using YouTube’s Ambient mode controls for computers. The cited guidance does not quantify its electricity impact, so do not treat disabling it as a proven major power-saving measure.

Choose playback hardware by measuring the whole setup
If you already have several playback devices, compare the complete arrangement: display, streaming box or computer, and any other equipment that must stay powered. A lower-use playback device may be preferable to a game console or full computer, but category comparisons are context, not predictions for your equipment.
ENERGY STAR’s digital media player page says a computer uses 11 times the energy of a digital media player and a game console uses 15 times the energy of a digital media player. It also says certified digital media players are 45% more efficient. Measure before claiming a saving
- Choose a meter appropriate to your location and equipment. If using a plug-in watt meter, check that its plug fits your outlet, its load rating suits the connected equipment, and it can record accumulated energy over time. A meter is optional; do not buy one unless measuring would help you make a decision.
- Record the baseline for the whole setup. Include the display and every device that must be on for playback. Keep the video and measurement interval the same where practical.
- Change one thing at a time. For example, test a lower resolution without also changing the TV picture mode or playback device.
- Repeat the measurement under comparable conditions. Compare the meter’s power reading or accumulated energy across the same interval. Record the settings and devices so the result is meaningful for your household.
