Wirecast can produce a YouTube livestream from cameras, screen captures, graphics, and other sources, and YouTube lists it as a verified encoder. That makes it a capable option for an always-on channel built around live production. It does not, by itself, guarantee a 24/7 stream: the computer, power, internet connection, source material, monitoring, and recovery plan all matter. For a prerecorded playlist that should run unattended, a cloud service may be a better fit than a desktop production encoder.
What Wirecast is best suited to
Wirecast is desktop live-production software for Mac and Windows. Its official pages describe unlimited live camera sources, screen capture, IP camera and web stream inputs, GPU-accelerated encoding, and direct output to YouTube or custom RTMP destinations. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Wirecast as a verified encoder and describes workflows using cameras, titles, graphics, and screenshots. This establishes platform compatibility, not a guarantee of continuous operation.
For an always-on channel, first decide what “24/7” means for your programming:
- Live-produced channel: You need camera switching, graphics, titles, remote guests, or hands-on control. Wirecast’s production tools may suit this workflow.
- Prerecorded playlist: You mainly need uploaded videos to play in a continuous loop with little live intervention. Compare a cloud streaming service designed for that use case; YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes Upstream and Gyre as options for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded content.
YouTube’s directory descriptions explain intended use cases; they do not establish which service performs best or stays online longest.

Wirecast plans and current listed prices
Wirecast’s pricing page lists Studio and Pro subscriptions. Prices and included features can change, so confirm the current terms on the official Wirecast site before subscribing.
| Plan | Listed price | Notable published features |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | $59 per month billed monthly, or $34 per month billed annually | Unlimited live camera sources, screen capture, IP camera and web stream inputs, GPU-accelerated encoding, and direct integrations including YouTube and custom RTMP. |
| Pro | $79 per month billed monthly, or $42 per month billed annually | Includes the listed production capabilities; adds cloud multistreaming, more Rendezvous remote guests, ISO recording, PTZ camera control, sports tools, and multi-track audio recording. |
The published pricing page does not establish that Pro is necessary for a single YouTube output. Choose based on the production features you need, not on an assumption that a higher tier is inherently more reliable.
Will Wirecast keep a YouTube stream live 24/7?
Wirecast’s YouTube compatibility does not establish measured 24/7 uptime. The official sources cited here do not publish a Wirecast-specific continuous-stream uptime record, failure rate, or long-duration reliability comparison. For an always-on stream running from a desktop setup, continuity depends on the full chain: power, computer, network, encoder, video source, and the steps available to recover when something fails.

YouTube advises streamers to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Its operational tips also recommend checking archive-file growth, confirming access on the channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. A stream that appears connected in the encoder should still be checked from the viewer’s side.

What a Wirecast setup needs
Computer and capture hardware
Wirecast publishes current Mac and Windows requirements, along with CPU, memory, GPU, and encoding guidance. Requirements depend on the Wirecast version and workload: source count, resolution, frame rate, and effects can all change what a system can handle. Check the current requirements and release notes for your version rather than treating a baseline specification as sufficient for a demanding continuous production.
Wirecast lists PCIe, Thunderbolt, and USB capture connections and names AJA, Blackmagic Design, and Magewell among the hardware brands it recommends. A capture card is relevant when you need to bring external video sources into the computer; not every setup requires one.

Upload bandwidth and network access
Wirecast’s published planning guidance says total upload bandwidth should be at least twice the total stream bitrate. Treat that as a minimum planning guideline, not a guarantee: leave headroom for network variability, other household or workplace traffic, and any additional outputs. Wirecast lists RTMP/RTMPS and other network ports, so a restrictive firewall may need configuration.
YouTube channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable the feature before scheduling a continuous stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOperating a continuous stream with Wirecast
- Confirm the channel can stream. Verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions. If live streaming is being enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Check the current Wirecast requirements. Match the current system guidance to your operating system, source count, resolution, frame rate, and effects. Confirm capture-device compatibility if you use external cameras or other video sources.
- Plan the network. Add up the bitrate of all outputs and apply Wirecast’s guidance of at least twice that total in upload capacity. Keep extra margin, and check whether your firewall permits the required streaming traffic.
- Build and test the production. Add the intended video sources and production elements, then test the complete output before relying on it for continuous programming. Verify sound and picture from YouTube’s channel or watch page, including on mobile.
- Monitor while live. Check audio and video quality continuously, and watch archive-file growth. A connected encoder is not enough evidence that viewers are receiving a usable stream.
- Test the recovery path. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable. Do this as a planned test, with a backup path and an understanding of the viewer impact—not during an unattended critical broadcast.
Wirecast versus cloud tools for prerecorded 24/7 programming
If the goal is continuous playback of prerecorded video rather than a live-produced show, start by comparing the workload and dependencies. YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes Upstream as a browser-based cloud studio for easy 24/7 live streaming and Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. The directory does not supply controlled uptime or total-cost comparisons, so evaluate current features, pricing, destination support, monitoring and failover controls, and media rights directly before choosing.

Common problems and practical checks
The stream will not start
- Channel not eligible: Check verification and recent live-streaming restrictions; allow up to 24 hours if enabling live streaming for the first time.
- Network or firewall blocks output: Check the connection and firewall rules for the protocols and ports used by the configured output.
- Insufficient upload headroom: Compare available upload capacity with total output bitrate, using Wirecast’s at-least-twice guidance and allowing additional margin.
Viewers see poor or missing audio/video
- Encoder status does not match viewer experience: Check the channel or watch page and a mobile device, then monitor the stream’s audio and video quality directly.
- Long-running output is failing or degrading: Monitor archive-file growth as well as playback, and use a planned failover test to verify the recovery path.
The computer or connection goes offline
A desktop encoder depends on the local computer, power, network, and source material remaining available. Identify which component failed, restore it, and follow the tested recovery procedure. For unattended prerecorded playback where keeping local equipment online is the main concern, consider a cloud service instead.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before putting a playlist or continuous program on YouTube, confirm that you have the rights to stream every video and audio track. A technically successful encoder connection does not establish that the material is permitted or eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
Wirecast’s production capability and a cloud service’s ability to loop video do not change the rights required for the material. Keep records of permissions and licenses for content you did not create, and remove material if you cannot establish a valid basis to stream it.
