Choose FFmpeg if you want a command-line workflow for looping prerecorded video and controlling the stream with explicit options. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you need a graphical scene builder with sources, alerts, chat widgets, and an integrated settings interface. Neither is documented as a guaranteed 24/7 service: a continuous stream still depends on the computer or host, network, media, configuration, and monitoring.
If you want prerecorded video to run on YouTube without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
FFmpeg vs Streamlabs: the practical difference
Both workflows send an encoded live feed to YouTube; they differ in how you build and operate it. FFmpeg is a command-line media framework with documented options for infinitely looping an input and an example of recovering RTMP output after temporary network failures. Streamlabs Desktop provides a visual interface for scenes, sources, widgets, audio, and output settings.
| Decision | FFmpeg | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Operating style | Command-line inputs, options, encoders, and outputs. | Graphical scenes, sources, widgets, and settings. |
| Prerecorded looping | The -stream_loop -1 option documents infinite input looping. |
The cited quick-start guide covers setup and going live, but does not describe a dedicated unattended loop or recovery design. That guide alone does not establish that no looping method exists. |
| Network recovery | The FFmpeg formats manual includes an RTMP output example using the FIFO muxer to keep processing at real-time speed during temporary network failure and attempt recovery. | The cited Streamlabs pages do not document comparable output-recovery behavior. |
| Visual production | Media processing can be composed through command-line options; the cited material does not detail filter setup. | The guide describes scenes, media sources, alert and chat widgets, and an audio mixer. |
| Long unattended operation | Requires planning for the host, process, network, and monitoring. | Also requires planning for the host, application, network, and monitoring. |
This is a workflow comparison, not an uptime ranking. The cited manuals and vendor guidance do not establish a controlled 24/7 comparison, comparative failure rate, or uptime guarantee for either application.

When FFmpeg is the better fit
Use FFmpeg if you are comfortable with a command line and want direct control of inputs, looping, encoding or stream copy, and output behavior. Its manual defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. The formats manual also shows an RTMP/FIFO configuration that attempts to recover from temporary network failure. These are useful building blocks, not a complete self-healing service: you still need to plan for process exits, host or power failure, network outages, and stream health.
For the precise options and example configurations, see the FFmpeg command-line manual and the FFmpeg formats manual.
When Streamlabs Desktop is the better fit
Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want to arrange a visual production rather than build the workflow from command-line components. Its quick-start guide covers scenes, gameplay and webcam sources, alert and chat widgets, audio setup, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder choice, and pre-live checks. This makes it the more directly documented option for a GUI production layout. The cited guide does not establish an unattended prerecorded looping or recovery design.

Connect either workflow to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. The ingest requirements apply whichever encoder you choose; follow the current instructions in YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or prepare the live stream and retrieve the server URL and stream key using YouTube’s current encoder workflow.
- Configure the encoder. In FFmpeg, set the input, loop behavior, encoding or stream-copy choices, and output destination. In Streamlabs, set the YouTube connection or custom RTMP destination and configure the scene and output settings.
- Match the output to the current ingest guidance. Check resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Run a representative test. Test the intended video, motion, and audio; check stream health and verify the stream appears correctly before relying on it for a long run.
- Plan for interruption. Monitor the host, encoder process, connection, and YouTube stream health. Decide how you will respond if the computer, application, network, or stream fails.
YouTube encoder settings to check
YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends keyframes two seconds apart (do not exceed four seconds). The H.264 bitrate recommendations below are the values listed on that page; the source gives no publication year, and these are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection can sustain the stream.

| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s broader settings table gives different minimum and recommended rates for other resolutions and for AV1 or H.265. Check its current values for your intended codec and output. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. Test upload capacity and choose a rate the connection can reliably sustain, leaving room for variation rather than treating the recommendation as a promise of stability.
Plan for long runs, archives, and recovery
Uninterrupted streaming is not the same as guaranteed uptime
Continuous operation depends on more than the encoder: the input file must remain available, the host must stay powered and functional, the network must sustain the output, and the process must be monitored. FFmpeg’s documented recovery example addresses temporary network failure in a particular output workflow; it does not by itself restart every failed process or protect against host failure. The cited Streamlabs pages do not describe equivalent output recovery. Neither source set establishes comparative reliability.

Copyright and reused content still apply
Looping a recording does not grant rights to its music, gameplay, footage, or other material, and a live format does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s policies. Use material you have rights to stream and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules, especially if the channel relies on repeated or minimally changed recordings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the server URL and stream key match the live stream, and check that the encoder is using the intended RTMP or RTMPS destination.
- Stream health reports instability: test actual upload capacity, lower the bitrate or output demand if needed, and use Ethernet where practical. Select settings your connection can sustain consistently.
- The video is rejected or does not match the intended output: verify codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- The video stops looping: in FFmpeg, check that the input-loop option is configured as intended and that the media remains readable. For Streamlabs, confirm the source and scene are still active; the cited quick-start guide does not document a dedicated unattended loop mechanism.
- The stream does not resume after an outage: distinguish a temporary network interruption from an encoder or host exit. FFmpeg’s FIFO example attempts recovery for temporary network failure, but process and machine recovery require separate planning. The cited Streamlabs materials do not document comparable output recovery semantics.
- The archive is missing: check stream duration and YouTube’s current archive behavior; do not assume a single stream at or above 12 hours will be automatically archived.
