Google Compute Engine Cost for Running a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An always-on YouTube stream on Compute Engine costs at least the VM’s runtime charge, but that is not the whole bill. Using Google Cloud’s listed US on-demand rates and an illustrative 730-hour month, an e2-standard-2 works out to about $48.92 and an e2-standard-4 to about $97.84 for compute alone. Google lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer as no charge; disks, IP addresses, other destinations, and optional services may still add costs.

Compute Engine cost for a 24/7 YouTube stream

Google Cloud’s general-purpose pricing page lists these on-demand E2 rates for the US locations shown. The monthly examples multiply each hourly rate by 730 hours, a common estimating convention rather than the exact number of hours in every calendar month. They are VM-only calculations, not complete deployment quotes. Rates are published by Google Cloud; the page was accessed October 3, 2026.

VM Listed resources On-demand rate 730-hour compute estimate
e2-standard-2 2 vCPU, 8 GiB memory $0.06701142 per hour About $48.92
e2-standard-4 4 vCPU, 16 GiB memory $0.13402284 per hour About $97.84

These figures are for the listed US locations and on-demand consumption. Region, eligible discounts, and the selected consumption model can change the applicable rate. Google lists other machine families and consumption models; do not assume a discount applies without confirming its eligibility and commitment terms. See Google Cloud’s general-purpose VM pricing and VM instance pricing.

What the VM estimate includes—and what it does not

Traffic from the VM to YouTube

Google’s network pricing table lists transfer from a Compute Engine VM to YouTube and certain other named Google products as “No charge.” This applies to the VM-to-Google-products traffic category described in the table; it is not a blanket waiver for all outbound internet traffic. Check Google Cloud network pricing for the category and applicable terms.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Traffic to other internet destinations

Outbound transfer to other destinations is a separate category. For listed regions and Standard Tier, Google’s pricing page shows the first 200 GiB per month at $0 and the next listed band, 200 GiB to 10,240 GiB, at $0.085/GiB per month per account. Region and service tier affect applicability; do not apply these bands automatically to every stream or configuration. See Network Service Tiers pricing.

Disks, images, IP addresses, and additional services

Persistent disks and images are billed separately from the VM and networking. Depending on the setup, also check whether a static or ephemeral external IP, a licensed operating-system image, monitoring, backups, storage, or other cloud services incur charges. Google’s disk and image pricing page expressly excludes VM instances and networking, so adding its charges does not replace the VM or network estimate.

Build a realistic monthly estimate

Before treating a figure as a budget, specify the deployment rather than multiplying an hourly VM rate alone. Google’s pricing pages separate compute, network, disk, and image charges; use the pricing calculator with the real region and configuration for an estimate.

  • Region and pricing basis: choose the actual location and compare rates on the same consumption-model basis. Confirm any discount and its eligibility.
  • Machine type and hours: identify the VM and expected running hours. A 730-hour month is an estimate convention, not a promise that a calendar month contains exactly 730 hours.
  • Disk and image: include disk type and size, image charges, and any applicable operating-system licensing.
  • Network destinations: distinguish the stream’s YouTube-bound transfer from traffic to other destinations, and account for the applicable region and service tier.
  • Optional services: add any IP address, monitoring, backup, storage, or other configured cloud service that will be used.
  • Recovery design: price redundancy or recovery resources if the design requires them. The estimates above assume no particular failover architecture and do not price one.

VM sizing depends on whether you encode or relay

A 24/7 schedule by itself does not determine the required VM size. A VM that forwards an already encoded stream has a different workload from one that encodes or transcodes video. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, software, and the number of outputs also matter. The available rates do not establish that either example E2 VM is adequate for a particular workload, and they are not performance test results.

For encoder settings, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube Help recommends streaming with RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Determine the actual workload and measure or otherwise validate it before committing to a machine type; a price calculation cannot establish capacity.

Managed Google option: Live Stream API

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separately priced managed service, not another name for a Compute Engine VM. Its charges depend on active-channel duration, configured input and output resolution, and codec. The displayed pricing table lists a distribution endpoint at $0.75 per hour, H.264 HD output at $0.45 per hour, and H.264 SD output at $0.22 per hour. These are the listed prices on the Google Cloud page accessed October 3, 2026; they are not a complete estimate for every configuration. See Live Stream API pricing.

A fair cost comparison needs the same input, output renditions, region, stream duration, and destination, as well as any relevant VM, network, disk, or service charges. The listed API prices alone do not show that it is cheaper than running a VM.

That means nothing has to stay on at home, uploads can stream at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. To try it, start with StreamNeo’s free day.

Quick cost decision

  • Use a Compute Engine estimate when you want to operate the VM and have specified its workload, region, runtime, storage, and network use.
  • Evaluate the Live Stream API as a separate managed-service design; compare equivalent inputs, outputs, duration, and region rather than only one hourly line item.
  • For looping uploaded video without maintaining a VM, consider StreamNeo’s cloud-hosted YouTube service and compare its slot plan with the resources and operations your own design would require.
