You can start an internet radio station on YouTube by enabling live streaming for an eligible channel, sending an audio program with visuals through an encoder, and confirming that you have the rights to broadcast every included track. YouTube supplies the live-streaming route; it does not grant music rights. Test the whole setup before launch, and choose broadcast lengths with YouTube’s archive behavior in mind.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified, at least 16 years old for live streaming, and not subject to a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder—software or standalone hardware—that can send your program to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A program and any accompanying visuals that you are entitled to transmit and, if applicable, archive.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate, plus room for normal fluctuations.
You do not need to buy a particular microphone or encoder to begin. A microphone may make sense for a presenter-led show; it is not an established requirement for automated, music-only programming. YouTube supports software encoders and external audio/video hardware, but its guidance does not rank specific products.
Choose a radio format and production method
Presenter-led or music-only?
A presenter-led show adds a live voice, introductions, interviews, or commentary. If you host from the broadcast location, a microphone is a practical option, and you will need to monitor both speech and music levels. A music-only station can run without a live host; plan how tracks, transitions, and visuals will be supplied to the encoder.
Software or standalone hardware encoder?
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware. Software can combine audio and visuals on a computer; hardware can provide a dedicated encoding route. Choose based on your existing equipment, operating comfort, and continuity needs—not an assumed quality or price advantage. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a price/performance winner.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Either way, YouTube receives a video livestream. For an audio-first station, pair the sound with a suitable static or changing visual feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the transmission workflow, but do not prescribe radio-specific artwork or software.
Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming
- In YouTube, verify your channel and check whether it has any live-streaming restriction. YouTube says live access requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Confirm the current eligibility details in YouTube Help.
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio if it is not already available. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch rather than immediately before it. See the encoder setup instructions.
- If the live option is unavailable, resolve the account or restriction issue and allow for activation time before planning a broadcast.
Clear music and other rights before transmission
Owning a song, buying a download, or being able to play it on another service does not by itself establish that you may stream it on YouTube. You are responsible for clearing the rights for your program, including the intended territory and what happens if YouTube archives the broadcast. An active stream receiving a copyright strike is among the reasons YouTube may restrict live-stream access; see Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.

YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The terms also assign the provider responsibility for applicable regulatory requirements in the Live Stream Territory, including licensing, registration, or notification requirements.
Those obligations depend on the country or territory and the material in your program. The information here cannot determine which licenses your particular catalog needs; check the rules that apply where you broadcast and where the service makes the content available. Do not start with the assumption that YouTube’s technical setup clears the music.

Create the stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, visibility, and other stream details for your intended test or program.
- In the stream setup, locate the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube describes these as the connection details the encoder uses to send the feed and YouTube uses to accept it. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current Studio interface.
- Enter the server URL and stream key in your encoder, then configure the audio program and visual feed. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Set the encoder’s output to a format and bitrate your connection can sustain. The YouTube guidance cited here does not prescribe a radio-specific resolution or universal bitrate, so use the encoder’s supported settings and YouTube’s current recommendations for the stream format you choose.
Test the complete broadcast chain
- Run a test stream before the first public program; use an unlisted test if you do not want viewers to find it.
- Start the encoder and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. Confirm that the correct picture and audio arrive.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and confirm that the stream is accessible. Check on mobile as well as the device you used to set it up.
- Listen for silence, clipping, unwanted noise, uneven levels, and audio/video mismatch. Keep monitoring while the test runs rather than relying on the encoder’s local preview alone.
- Check upload capacity against the total stream bitrate. YouTube’s Streaming tips advise that the stream bitrate stay below available upload bandwidth and recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That recommendation is a margin, not a substitute for testing on the connection you will actually use.
Plan stream length and replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder instructions. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one complete replay: the cited guidance does not establish that outcome. If replay continuity matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions and check the resulting archive behavior before relying on it. Also make sure your music rights cover the archived version, not only the live transmission.
Monetization is conditional
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships among possible live revenue features, subject to eligibility. Ads are not guaranteed to serve in every slot, so do not build a station budget around a promised ad fill or revenue amount. YouTube also says ads are turned off for an externally embedded player with autoplay. Review YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance for applicable requirements and controls.

The encoder will not connect
Check that you copied the server URL and stream key from the correct stream in YouTube Studio and entered both in the encoder’s streaming settings. If needed, retrieve the current connection details from Studio and replace the encoder values; keep the key private.
The preview is black, silent, or wrong
Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended video and audio sources, then check the Live Control Room preview and watch page. Verify the selected audio input, playback, and levels; a local encoder preview does not prove the stream is arriving correctly at YouTube.
The stream buffers or drops
Compare total output bitrate with available upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the current output, reduce the encoder’s bitrate or improve the upload connection, then run another test and monitor it.
A song triggers a rights issue
Stop treating platform availability or ownership of a copy as proof of streaming permission. Review the rights for the exact track, territory, live transmission, and archive; an active stream receiving a copyright strike can lead to livestream restrictions.

The replay is incomplete or unavailable
Check the broadcast duration and the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; the guidance cited here does not promise one complete replay for an uninterrupted 24/7 feed.
