Why Is My Google Compute Engine YouTube Stream Dropping Frames?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The cause depends on which counter is rising. In OBS, connection-related dropped frames usually mean the route from your Google Compute Engine VM to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Rendering lag or encoding overload points instead to insufficient processing capacity or overly demanding output settings. Check OBS and YouTube’s stream health first; don’t assume the VM is simply too small.

Identify what is actually dropping frames

“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. Before changing bitrate, upgrading a VM, or adjusting encoder settings, note the exact OBS statistic or log message that is increasing and check whether YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health warning.

  • Connection-related dropped frames: OBS’s stream-connection guidance associates these with an unstable connection to the remote stream server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Investigate the VM’s outbound route, actual throughput, and configured bitrate. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
  • Rendering or encoding lag: This points toward the work required to render scenes or encode output, rather than necessarily a network problem. Check the selected resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, filters, and available CPU/GPU resources. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
  • YouTube stream-health warning: Read the status and issue details in Live Control Room; they can help identify a configuration problem, but do not by themselves establish whether the VM’s network path is stable.

A choppy picture can therefore require a different fix from a rising connection-dropped-frames counter. Diagnose the stage that is failing before tuning it.

Check YouTube’s health status and encoder settings

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes stream-health states as good, ok, bad, and noData, alongside configuration issues. A bad status can indicate an error-level configuration issue; noData means YouTube’s live-streaming backend has no health information for that stream. Use any displayed issue details to check the relevant encoder configuration rather than guessing. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.

Compare your stream’s codec, output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the matching row in YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. Examples from YouTube Help, accessed 2026:

Output and codec YouTube’s recommended bitrate YouTube’s minimum bitrate
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps, H.264 8 Mbps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of your VM’s available bandwidth or guarantees about its route to an ingest server. The recommended rate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current matching table row rather than treating one example as a universal target.

  • YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, and up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm that the selected encoder and stream configuration agree with the requirements shown for your broadcast.
  • Choose a bitrate your measured outbound path can sustain reliably, not merely one that meets YouTube’s minimum. If connection drops rise, lower the bitrate or output demand for a test and see whether the counter stabilizes.

Check the Compute Engine VM and its outbound path

Compute Engine’s published egress limit is a ceiling, not a speed test result. Google documents that the maximum possible bandwidth depends on the VM machine type and routing, and that the maximum is achievable only in specific situations. Limits and routes vary by machine series and destination. See Google Cloud’s Network bandwidth documentation.

For the common single-physical-NIC configuration, bandwidth is accounted for per VM instance, not per vNIC or IP address. Adding vNICs or IP addresses does not raise the bandwidth limit for that configuration. High internal VM-to-VM rates are not proof that an external YouTube ingest path can sustain the same rate: Google’s Tier_1 networking guidance describes specific high-bandwidth conditions, including same-zone VMs, VPC routing, and internal IP destinations.

  1. Record the VM details. Note the machine type, region, route, encoder, output settings, and configured bitrate. Without these details and the relevant OBS counter or log, the specific cause cannot be determined.
  2. Check actual outbound performance and stability. Compare the sustained rate and stability of the VM’s path toward the selected YouTube ingest endpoint with the configured stream bitrate. A published VM maximum does not establish achieved throughput to that destination.
  3. Compare demand with capacity. If the configured bitrate approaches or exceeds what the path can sustain reliably, test a lower bitrate or output setting, then watch whether OBS connection drops and YouTube health improve.
  4. Upgrade only on evidence. A larger VM is relevant if you establish that the machine’s applicable egress ceiling or its CPU/GPU resources are the limiting factor. Do not upgrade solely because frames are dropping.

If rendering or encoding is the bottleneck

When OBS indicates rendering or encoding lag rather than connection drops, network tuning is unlikely to address the underlying issue. Reduce the work the VM must perform and retest:

  • Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, then observe whether the rendering or encoding counter improves.
  • Simplify scenes and reduce costly filters or other rendering work.
  • Review whether the VM has enough CPU/GPU resources for the chosen encoder and settings, and whether the encoder support you expect is available in that VM.

Change one relevant setting at a time where practical. That makes it easier to tell whether the counter improved because of the adjustment, rather than masking a separate network issue.

Test before relying on the stream

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, and monitor both OBS statistics and YouTube’s health messages during the test. A static scene or brief connection check may not expose a problem that appears under the real stream’s bitrate or rendering workload.

Common symptoms and fixes

What you observe What to investigate First useful action
OBS connection-related dropped frames rise Unstable route to YouTube ingest or bitrate beyond what the path sustains Check outbound stability and achieved throughput, then test a sustainable bitrate.
OBS reports rendering or encoding lag Output resolution, frame rate, scene/filter workload, or VM processing capacity Reduce output demand or scene workload and recheck the relevant counter.
YouTube reports a configuration issue Encoder settings such as codec, bitrate, or frame rate Use the health issue details and compare settings with YouTube’s current guidance.
YouTube health is noData YouTube’s backend has no health information for the stream Do not treat this state alone as proof of a network or encoding fault; check OBS counters and whether YouTube is receiving the stream.
The VM’s published maximum looks sufficient, but drops continue The limit is not a promise of throughput to an external ingest destination; route and actual performance matter Measure the VM’s real outbound path and check which OBS counter rises.
