To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a DigitalOcean VPS, add it in OBS as a Media Source, enable Loop, enter the YouTube stream URL and key, then start the encoder and confirm its preview in YouTube Studio. The VPS must have a usable Linux graphical environment and enough compute and outbound transfer for your chosen stream settings; a minimal headless Droplet is not automatically ready to run OBS.

What you need before setting up the stream

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement requirements.
  • A DigitalOcean Droplet with a compatible Linux desktop or display environment configured, plus sufficient CPU and graphics support for OBS. OBS’s Linux requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland, and OBS cautions that meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. See OBS system requirements.
  • The video file stored somewhere the OBS process can read, such as on the VPS itself. For a playlist using OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • A plan for continuous outbound data transfer. The stream runs for as long as the encoder sends it, so estimate transfer from bitrate and hours before leaving it online.

1. Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
  2. Create an encoder stream or select one you have already set up. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key.
  3. Copy both values for use in OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s current workflow is described in Set up your encoder for live streaming.

2. Install and prepare OBS on the Droplet

Install OBS for the VPS’s Linux distribution and ensure it can open a graphical session. DigitalOcean Droplets are Linux virtual machines, but the available documentation does not establish that every standard image includes a desktop or graphics support suitable for OBS. Verify those prerequisites for the image and plan you choose before relying on it for a broadcast.

DigitalOcean says plan size depends on workload and identifies CPU-Optimized Droplets as appropriate for video and live-streaming workloads. It does not prescribe one size that reliably encodes every resolution, frame rate, scene, or software-encoder combination. Start with a workload-appropriate plan, test the actual stream, watch CPU use and dropped frames, and resize if performance is inadequate. Consult DigitalOcean’s Droplet plan guide.

3. Add the video and turn on looping

  1. In OBS, open the Sources panel and select + → Media Source.
  2. Name the source, then select the local video file. Confirm the OBS process has permission to read it.
  3. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS documents that this setting restarts the file after playback completes; Media Source supports Linux and file types including MP4. See OBS Media Sources.
  4. Check the preview and audio meters. Play the source and confirm that both picture and sound are present before connecting the broadcast.

For multiple videos, add a VLC Video source and use its Loop Playlist option, which OBS documents as enabled by default. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS).

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

4. Configure YouTube ingest and encoder settings

In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the service is available, or choose the custom server option and enter the server URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS when configuring a custom ingest endpoint if YouTube provides that option.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. Its guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS in the listed settings, up to 60 fps. Resolution, frame rate, and codec affect the recommended bitrate; see YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table.

For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet can encode or sustain the stream. Leave upload headroom and test the feed under realistic conditions.

5. Start, verify, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the preview has video and audio. If the event requires a separate start action in Live Control Room, start it there after the encoder is sending.
  3. Open the public or unlisted watch page as appropriate and verify playback. Keep an eye on OBS for dropped frames and YouTube for stream-health warnings.
  4. For any continuous broadcast, plan how you will handle the event and its archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that threshold is not a recommended restart schedule, and it does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams.

Estimate DigitalOcean transfer before leaving it live

Outbound transfer accumulates continuously. As a rough estimate, multiply the encoded bitrate by the hours streamed, convert bits to bytes, and add overhead; then compare the result with the transfer pool for your current Droplet plan. DigitalOcean documents a charge of $0.01 per GiB for outbound transfer above the included pooled allowance. Plan allowances and pricing can change, so check its current Droplet pricing and transfer documentation before committing to a long-running stream.

OBS on a VPS or a managed cloud service?

OBS on a VPS gives you direct control over sources and scenes, but you are responsible for the graphical environment, compute capacity, network transfer, and monitoring. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded video; that listing is not a comparison of price or reliability. If you prefer to manage the uploaded video and YouTube stream through StreamNeo, it is the #1 alternative to try first: it runs always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a first day free.

Video appears but audio is missing

Check that the source has an audio track, that its level is visible in OBS’s audio mixer, and that the stream preview includes audio. Ensure the file is readable and test playback locally in OBS before broadcasting.

Frames drop or the stream becomes unstable

Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Check Droplet CPU use and OBS dropped frames during a realistic test; consider a larger workload-appropriate plan or lower-output settings if the VPS cannot sustain encoding. Also leave network headroom as YouTube advises.

The broadcast works but transfer costs are higher than expected

Recalculate outbound use from the configured bitrate and total hours, including overhead, then compare with the current pooled allowance. DigitalOcean charges for excess outbound transfer above that allowance; its live pricing page has the current terms.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud keeps the uploaded video looping. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
