Multiply that baseline by your encoder bitrate: a 6 Mbps stream is about 1.944 decimal TB, and a 10 Mbps stream about 3.24 decimal TB. These are estimates for uninterrupted streaming, not a provider’s guaranteed bill. When choosing a Windows VPS, check both its sustained outbound rate and its monthly transfer allowance—the first is speed, the second is volume.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
For a constant-bitrate stream, estimate data from the outgoing bitrate and the time spent streaming. The calculation uses 8 bits per byte, 1,000,000 bits per megabit, and 86,400 seconds per day:
Data in decimal GB = bitrate in Mbps × hours × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000
At 1 Mbps, that is approximately 10.8 decimal GB per day, or 324 decimal GB in a 30-day month. Multiply those figures by your stream bitrate.

These are arithmetic estimates, not measured usage or provider guarantees. They assume an uninterrupted stream at the stated bitrate and exclude transport overhead, reconnects, and other server traffic. Allow headroom. Providers may also display binary units such as GiB or TiB; those are not numerically identical to decimal GB or TB.
What bitrate should you use?
Bitrate affects both picture quality and transfer volume. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and lists these H.264 settings for common loop resolutions:

The bitrate recommendations are guidance, not a requirement that every loop use these settings. A lower bitrate can reduce transfer use but may reduce image quality. Use settings suited to the video and test stream behavior before relying on a continuous broadcast. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, no more than four seconds, and RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Bandwidth and data allowance are different
Throughput: can the VPS send fast enough?
Throughput is the rate at which the server can send data. The VPS must sustain at least the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, with room for variation and any other traffic. An advertised port speed or VM bandwidth figure is not, by itself, proof that a particular instance will sustain your chosen stream rate.

Transfer allowance: how much can it send in a billing period?
Transfer allowance is the volume a plan includes over a stated period. A fast port does not mean the plan includes unlimited monthly data; a large allowance does not prove that the VM can sustain your required bitrate. Check the exact Windows VPS product’s terms for the counted traffic direction, allowance period, pooling rules, and what happens at the limit.
Which traffic counts toward the VPS estimate?
In the standard setup, the VPS sends the encoded ingest stream to YouTube, which transcodes the live stream for viewers. Estimate VPS upload from the outgoing ingest bitrate; do not multiply it by the number of viewers. This does not include separate restreaming, local monitoring, or other server traffic.

How to check a Windows VPS plan
- Choose the encoder bitrate first. Use a suitable YouTube recommendation as a starting point, then calculate the 30-day transfer estimate from the table or formula above.
- Check sustained outbound capacity. Confirm the exact Windows instance can support the outgoing rate with headroom. Ask the provider if its published figure does not make clear whether it applies to your VM or is shared.
- Read the transfer terms for that SKU and region. Confirm whether the allowance is outbound-only or total traffic, per instance or pooled, and measured by calendar month or billing period. DigitalOcean, for example, documents included outbound transfer, free inbound transfer, and outbound overage billing for Droplets; those terms should not be assumed to apply to another provider or product. - Confirm Windows and runtime suitability. Verify that a Windows image is available, whether its license is included in the quoted plan, and that the instance can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate for the intended runtime. No general transfer figure establishes a provider’s CPU capacity or recovery behavior for a specific loop.
There is no single “Windows VPS bandwidth” figure that applies to every host. Providers define transfer accounting differently, and the plan’s exact terms matter. The examples above explain how to size a requirement; they are not a ranking of VPS providers or a guarantee of service.

- Using the port speed as the monthly allowance: speed is a rate; allowance is a volume over time. Check both.
- Treating the estimate as an exact bill: overhead, reconnects, extra traffic, and provider accounting can change actual usage. Budget headroom.
- Multiplying by audience size: in the standard YouTube ingest path, viewer delivery is not extra VPS ingest upload. Separate restreaming or monitoring can add traffic.
- Assuming all providers count data alike: verify direction, pooling, billing period, and limit behavior on the precise Windows plan.
- Choosing bitrate without testing: the recommended settings are starting guidance. Test the encoder output and monitor YouTube stream health before leaving a loop unattended.
