First find out which kind of “dropped frames” you have. If OBS reports dropped frames in its streaming connection statistics or your stream disconnects, troubleshoot the network path to the ingest server and the bitrate. If the stream or recording is choppy, or OBS says “encoding overloaded,” check GPU, rendering, encoding, and scene load instead. These symptoms have different causes, so changing bitrate will not fix every case.
Identify what is falling behind
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting (published September 30, 2024) says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. In this context, frames are discarded when the connection is unstable or cannot keep pace with the configured bitrate. OBS says this kind of drop is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself.
Choppy output can also come from local rendering or encoding pressure. If OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” but your game appears to run acceptably, OBS may still lack enough GPU capacity to composite and render the scene. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting article (published June 12, 2021) explains that scene rendering uses GPU resources.
- Connection drops or disconnections: start with the ingest server, bitrate, network connection, and security or driver interference.
- Choppy stream or recording, or “encoding overloaded”: start with GPU load, game settings, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity.
Fix connection-related dropped frames
1. Test the ingest server and destination
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and try a different ingest server if the service offers one. If the issue seems tied to a particular destination, test another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison. A change in results can help isolate a route or destination-specific problem; it does not by itself identify the exact cause.

2. Lower the bitrate to match stable upload capacity
Open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS Project gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its 2024 guidance, but that is not a guarantee: use stable upload capacity, allow for fluctuations, and stay within the streaming service’s bitrate limits. If upload speed varies, a bitrate that fits the best speed test result may still exceed what the connection can sustain during a stream.
Reducing bitrate can make the connection easier to sustain, but it also reduces the data available for video quality. Change it in measured increments and check OBS’s connection statistics during a test stream rather than assuming one figure will suit every connection.

3. Try Windows network options only as a controlled test
On Windows, OBS says some users report improvement after enabling Settings → Advanced → Network → Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. These options are Windows-only. Leave Bind to IP set to Default. An IPv4-only test is reversible; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
4. Isolate software and network causes
Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus product, bundled network-optimization software, or outdated network drivers could be interfering. Test one likely cause at a time so you can tell whether it affects the stream. If temporarily disabling security software changes the result, turn it back on after the test and configure an OBS exception as appropriate; do not leave protection disabled as a fix.

5. Test wired connectivity and inspect network equipment
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, try a wired connection to see whether wireless instability is involved. A cable is a useful diagnostic when Wi-Fi is suspect, not a universal remedy. Restart the modem or router if appropriate, and inspect network cables and other hardware. If the problem persists after these checks, contact your ISP; the route or connection may need attention outside OBS.
6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, reducing dropped frames at the cost of video quality. OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a way to keep a stream going through congestion, not as a substitute for resolving an unstable connection.

Fix rendering or encoding overload
1. Give OBS more GPU capacity
On Windows, close OBS and reopen it with Run as administrator; OBS lists this as a quick fix that can help with GPU overload. Also check for other GPU-heavy programs you opened and close or reduce them if it is safe to do so. These steps address local processing load, not a weak connection to the ingest server.
2. Reduce the game’s GPU demand
Cap the game’s frame rate near your monitor’s refresh rate or use V-Sync so the game does not consume all available GPU capacity. If OBS still falls behind, lower in-game graphics settings. The game can look smooth while leaving too little GPU time for OBS to render scenes.

3. Lower OBS output resolution or frame rate if needed
In Settings → Video, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test again. If 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS’s 2021 article suggests trying 30 fps as an example. Lowering frame rate or resolution can reduce rendering and encoding work, but changes the output’s smoothness or detail; choose a level that meets your needs rather than treating 30 fps as a universal setting.
4. Simplify scenes and sources
Reduce costly filters and browser sources, use only the source resolution you need, and keep scene collections focused. A scene with many resource-heavy sources can increase OBS’s rendering workload even when the game itself appears to perform well.
