A strike follows when YouTube accepts a copyright removal request and takes the video down. Claims can still affect whether a video is monetized, tracked or available in particular countries, so check the notice and its consequences before deciding what to do.
Claim vs. strike: the essential difference
| Question | Content ID claim | Copyright strike |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers it? | A match between uploaded content and material in YouTube’s Content ID system, or a manual claim. | A copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and finds valid. |
| What is affected? | Usually the video and its availability or monetization. | The removed video and the channel’s strike status. |
| What can happen? | The rights holder may monetize, track or block the video, worldwide or in selected regions. | The video is removed and the channel receives a strike. |
| Does the notice itself count as a strike? | No. A Content ID claim does not itself create a strike. | Yes. A valid takedown results in a strike. |
YouTube Help puts it plainly: “A Content ID claim doesn’t result in a copyright strike, but a copyright takedown does.” A claim may still prevent viewers from watching a video in some or all locations, or affect who can monetize it. A video can have multiple claims, while a channel can have only one copyright strike per video at a time.
How to identify which notice you received
In YouTube Studio, check the video’s Restrictions column. “Claims” indicates a Content ID claim; “Copyright—Takedown” indicates a copyright removal request. Open the notice to see the material identified and the action affecting the video. YouTube also sends email notifications about these events.
Manual claims are distinct from automated Content ID matches. YouTube requires manual claims to identify accurate timestamps for the claimed material. If the notice seems wrong, compare those timestamps with your video before choosing a response.

What to do when you receive a Content ID claim
- Read the claim details. Identify the claimed material, claimant, affected timestamps, policy and any regional restrictions. A block may apply worldwide or only in specified countries or regions.
- Decide whether you have a defensible rights basis. YouTube lists having all necessary rights, a plausible copyright exception such as fair use, or mistaken identification or matching as possible grounds for a dispute. The applicable law and outcome depend on the facts and jurisdiction.
- Use the response path that fits your position. If you have a valid basis, you may dispute the claim. If you do not, do not dispute simply to test the process. Giving credit, owning a copy of the work, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself establish permission to use it.
- Track the response and any deadlines shown. YouTube says a claimant generally has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. During an active dispute or appeal, revenue data for that video will not appear in YouTube Analytics.
YouTube says it cannot decide whether you should dispute a claim. The claimant reviews the dispute because YouTube does not know what material was licensed or whether a particular use qualifies for an exception. If you are unsure about your rights or the legal consequences, consider getting advice from a qualified copyright lawyer.
Disputes, appeals and the risk of escalation
Disputing a claim
A dispute asks the claimant to reconsider the claim. Submit one only when you can explain a credible rights basis, such as a licence covering the use, ownership of the relevant rights, a defensible exception, or a clear mismatch. Repeated or malicious misuse of the dispute process can lead to penalties.

Appealing a rejected dispute
If YouTube makes an appeal available after a dispute is rejected, an appeal is not merely another harmless review. The claimant generally has seven days to respond to an appeal. If the claimant rejects it, they can submit a copyright removal request; if YouTube finds that request valid, the video is removed and a strike is applied.
For eligible blocked videos, YouTube may offer “Escalate to Appeal.” This skips the initial dispute stage and goes directly to an appeal with a seven-day response window. That can move the platform process faster, but it also puts the creator on the higher-stakes path sooner.

What a copyright takedown and strike mean
A copyright removal request, also called a takedown, is a legal request to remove content for alleged infringement. YouTube reviews it; if it appears valid, YouTube removes the content and applies a strike. A Content ID claim does not automatically become a strike: a claimant must submit a removal request, and YouTube must find it valid.
Scheduled takedown: act before the deadline
Some removal requests are scheduled, giving the creator seven days to act before the video is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, YouTube says you may delete the video, seek a retraction from the claimant, or, if the request followed a rejected claim appeal, cancel the appeal. Deleting the video after a strike has already applied does not clear that strike.

Strike duration and channel consequences
- A strike can expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active strikes.
- Three active copyright strikes in a 90-day period put the channel and associated channels at risk of termination. A terminated creator cannot create new channels.
- A live stream removed for copyright can cause a strike and a seven-day restriction on live streaming. Another strike can extend the restriction to 14 days.
When a counter notification may apply
A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed after a copyright takedown—not a routine second appeal. YouTube says it is for creators who believe the removal was mistaken, including because of misidentification or a qualifying copyright exception. Do not submit one unless you understand the legal process and can support the position.
YouTube shares the counter notification with the claimant. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. If they do not, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless you deleted it. False information or misuse can result in account termination or other legal consequences.

Monetization, availability and Shorts
A claim’s effect depends on the rights holder’s policy: the video may be monetized, tracked or blocked. Blocking can be global or limited to selected territories. Do not assume that a claim means the creator will ultimately receive revenue, or that a video will remain available to everyone.
YouTube Help says Shorts from one to three minutes with an active Content ID claim are blocked while the claim is active, regardless of the claim policy; that block does not itself create a copyright strike. YouTube’s guidance also gives date- and channel-specific qualifications: it says new vertical videos in that length range have been categorized as Shorts since October 15, 2024, and gives a December 8, 2025 cutoff for Official Artist Channels or channels linked to music Content Owners. Because Shorts rules and eligibility can change, check the current YouTube Help guidance for your channel and video before relying on this rule.
Preventing avoidable copyright problems on a YouTube livestream
Using a cloud service to loop uploaded videos does not grant rights to the music, video or other material in them. Check that you have the necessary rights for every recording and playlist item before broadcasting, especially if a stream will run continuously. A live stream removed for copyright can carry channel consequences, just like other copyright removals.
For creators who want an uploaded-video stream to continue without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not provide rights to their contents or decide whether a use is lawful. Review the rights for your material before you start. The copyright safety checklist can help you work through that review. If you choose to use the service, the first day is free with no card; start a StreamNeo trial.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- “I credited the artist, so I can use the song.” Credit alone does not establish permission. Check whether your licence covers the specific use.
- “I bought the song or video, so I own the rights.” Owning a copy is not the same as owning the copyright or having a licence for a public upload or livestream.
- “I’m not monetizing, so the use is allowed.” Declining monetization does not by itself establish a right to use the material.
- “A claim is already a strike.” Check the Restrictions label and notice. A claim and a takedown are different processes with different consequences.
- “I can appeal just to see what happens.” An appeal can lead to a takedown request and strike. Use it only with a defensible basis.
- “Deleting the video will erase the strike.” Deletion may prevent a strike only during the seven-day scheduled-removal window. It does not clear a strike that has already been applied.
