How to Fix OBS Studio Crashing: A Safe, Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

If OBS Studio keeps crashing, start by recording when it fails, then test one possible cause at a time. Launch in Safe Mode to check whether a third-party plugin, script, or websocket is involved; close overlays and other capture tools; then check compatibility and reduce scene or output load if the crash occurs under pressure. These checks narrow the cause—they do not guarantee a fix.

First, note when OBS crashes

Before changing settings, write down your operating system, OBS version, and the precise action that precedes the crash. Does OBS fail during startup, when you open a source or switch scenes, when you start streaming or recording, or only after a long session? Note whether you have installed plugins, scripts, websockets, overlays, monitoring displays, or other capture and recording applications.

This gives you a baseline to compare against. During troubleshooting, change one condition at a time and repeat the same action that triggered the crash. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change mattered.

Test whether an extension is involved

OBS has a Safe Mode launch parameter that starts the program with third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets disabled. The OBS Project describes it as a way to “Force OBS to start in safe mode, disabling all third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets.” See the official OBS launch parameters page for the method applicable to your installation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Close OBS if it is still open.
  2. Use the official launch-parameter instructions to start OBS in Safe Mode.
  3. Repeat the same action that caused the crash in a normal launch.

If OBS behaves differently in Safe Mode, investigate third-party extensions; that result alone does not identify the responsible item. Reintroduce plugins, scripts, and websockets selectively, testing after each change. If the crash returns after one is restored, you have a stronger lead to investigate, but avoid treating a single test as proof if other conditions changed too.

Temporarily close software that can conflict with OBS

Applications that hook graphics functions can interfere with OBS and cause crashes or other unexpected behavior. OBS lists on-screen displays and monitoring tools, overlays, and other capture or recording applications among the types of software to consider. Its Known Application Conflicts page notes that “Several 3rd party applications can interfere with the correct operation of OBS Studio.”

  1. Exit overlay and on-screen-display software, GPU monitoring displays, and other capture or recording applications.
  2. Reopen OBS and repeat the same triggering action.
  3. If the behavior changes, restore the closed applications one at a time, retesting between changes.

This is a temporary diagnostic test, not a recommendation to remove software permanently. Check the OBS conflict page for examples and current details.

Check compatibility, especially on a laptop

Compare your operating system and graphics configuration with the OBS Project’s system requirements. Meeting the listed baseline does not guarantee that a computer can handle a particular streaming or recording workload, and a mismatch does not by itself establish the cause of a crash.

If the failure involves capture on a laptop

Laptops with more than one GPU can require additional attention to which GPU OBS uses, particularly for display capture. Consult the OBS Project’s laptop troubleshooting guide for the applicable capture case and the Windows and OBS version conditions described there. This guidance is specific to relevant laptop capture configurations, not a general explanation for every crash.

Reduce workload if crashes track heavy scenes or output

If OBS crashes when you switch to a complex scene or start streaming or recording, test whether the workload is a factor. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing GPU demand and scene complexity when addressing performance overload.

A change in behavior is useful diagnostic evidence, not confirmation that performance overload caused an otherwise unexplained crash. Keep these tests separate from Safe Mode and conflict tests so the results remain interpretable.

If OBS still crashes

Collect the crash log and relevant system details, then follow current, platform-specific OBS instructions for sharing or diagnosing them. The sources linked here do not establish a universal crash-log workflow or a reliable way to diagnose every crash from a log signature, so do not infer a cause from a log without appropriate evidence. When seeking help, include your operating system and OBS version, when the crash occurs, what action reproduces it, and which controlled checks changed the behavior.

Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video, not a camera feed. It streams the files as uploaded up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
