How to Loop Prerecorded Videos on YouTube Live with Linode and FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Linode Compute Instance, configure an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i input. The option tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. You’ll need a verified YouTube channel eligible to livestream, a Linux instance with enough encoding and network capacity for your chosen settings, and a prerecorded file stored on that instance.

Before you start

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s Help page also sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before configuring the event.
  • Create a Linux Compute Instance using Linode’s streaming-server guide. The guide establishes a Compute Instance as a hosting option, but it does not specify a size or benchmark for this particular FFmpeg workload. Choose a server that can encode your source at the selected resolution and frame rate, and check the provider’s current instance and bandwidth details before deploying.
  • Install FFmpeg using the instructions for your Linux distribution. Upload the video and note its full path. Confirm that the file contains the expected audio and video streams and that your installed FFmpeg build supports the codecs and protocols you plan to use.
  • Prepare a YouTube Live event and keep its stream key private. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send video to your channel’s stream.

Configure the YouTube Live encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select a stream configured for encoder software.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS URL if your FFmpeg build supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s encoder connection instructions and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  3. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, screenshots, and repositories. Insert the exact URL and key YouTube provides into the FFmpeg output destination; do not use example credentials.

Choose compatible encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See the current encoder settings guidance for its supported configurations.

  • Resolution and video bitrate: Match the source and the Linode instance’s actual encoding capacity. Use a bitrate appropriate for your resolution and frame rate according to YouTube’s current settings guidance; there is no single bitrate that fits every source.
  • Keyframes: Set the GOP duration to two seconds where possible, and keep it at four seconds or less. For example, at 30 fps a two-second GOP is 60 frames; at 60 fps it is 120 frames.
  • Network capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. The instance’s effective outbound capacity must sustain the video and audio bitrate with that margin; do not assume a plan’s advertised network capacity proves the stream will be stable. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • Audio: The example below uses AAC at 128 kb/s. Confirm that the source has an audio stream and that the output is appropriate for your content; remove or change audio options only if you have a reason to do so.

Run FFmpeg with an infinite input loop

Use this as a configuration template, not as a tested Linode command. Replace the uppercase placeholders with values compatible with your source and YouTube’s encoder guidance. The stream-loop option is an input option, so it must come before the matching -i argument. FFmpeg documents this behavior in its command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
  -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
  • /path/to/video.mp4 is the uploaded media file’s actual path.
  • VIDEO_BITRATE and VIDEO_BUFFER must be replaced with suitable values, including units accepted by FFmpeg, for example 4500k for a bitrate value. This is an illustration of formatting, not a recommended bitrate for every resolution.
  • KEYFRAME_INTERVAL is the GOP length in frames. For a two-second interval, use twice the frame rate (for example, 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps). The frame rate must also match the output you intend to send.
  • Replace the output destination with the exact RTMPS ingest URL and stream key supplied by Live Control Room. Some interfaces present the URL and key separately; join them only in the format YouTube specifies for the encoder.

-re reads the file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input without a set end. The example transcodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC, then sends an FLV stream to the ingest endpoint. Verify that your FFmpeg build includes the required encoder and RTMPS protocol support; if it does not, install a build that does or adjust the configuration to a supported option.

Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start the FFmpeg command and watch its output for connection errors, missing streams, or encoding failures.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that both picture and audio are present and that the preview plays representative motion and sound from the source.
  3. Start the live event in YouTube only after the preview and stream health look right. Keep an eye on FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health while it runs. YouTube’s stream health guidance explains what to monitor.
  4. To stop, end the event in YouTube and then stop FFmpeg on the instance. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish automatic archiving for a single indefinitely long broadcast. For broadcasts beyond 12 hours, plan separate sessions or confirm the archive behavior for your specific event. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg says it cannot connect: Recheck the ingest URL, stream key, outbound network access, and whether the URL is RTMP or RTMPS as expected. Confirm that the FFmpeg build supports the protocol you selected.
  • YouTube receives no picture or audio: Confirm the input path and streams, review FFmpeg’s error output, and check that the video and audio codecs are supported by your chosen output settings.
  • The stream buffers or reports poor health: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, or use an instance and network connection with more capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above the total bitrate.
  • Keyframes are rejected or stream compatibility is poor: Check the output frame rate and GOP together. Use a two-second interval where possible and do not exceed four seconds.
  • The loop ends unexpectedly: Check FFmpeg’s process output and whether the process or instance stopped. The loop option repeats the input, but it cannot keep running if FFmpeg is terminated or the host goes offline.

Linode versus a computer you already control

Linode can host the file and FFmpeg away from your home computer, but it adds cloud-server administration and a recurring compute cost. A computer you already own avoids creating a cloud instance, but the computer, media file, and reliable upload connection must remain available. Either option must have enough capacity to encode the chosen stream; the available Linode guide does not establish a fixed instance size, encoding speed, or current price for this workload.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining a Linux server or leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option that keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.

Copyright and channel considerations

Only stream video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A video playing continuously does not itself establish permission to use its music, footage, or other material. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules and copyright policies apply to prerecorded content just as they do to other live broadcasts. Before going live, review YouTube’s requirements and use the copyright safety checklist. Also consider whether a repetitive or minimally changed stream complies with the rules applicable to your channel; technical ability to loop a file is not a guarantee of eligibility for monetization or continued access to live streaming.
