You need an eligible YouTube channel, a protected stream key, settings suited to your video, and a supervised process with monitoring and a recovery plan. This guide covers that setup without implying a particular EC2 size or monthly cost: both depend on your workload and region.
How the setup fits together
FFmpeg reads a video source, encodes or packages it, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. EC2 supplies the Linux host that runs FFmpeg. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key. For a 24/7 broadcast, you also need to keep the process observable and recoverable; neither EC2 nor a reconnect option makes a single host fail-proof.
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow requires the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Its key identifies the destination and authorizes YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed: YouTube: Stream with an encoder.
1. Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
Check live-stream eligibility
Confirm that the channel is eligible to livestream before building the EC2 workflow. YouTube’s eligibility requirements and activation details are described in YouTube’s live-streaming help. Availability or activation delays can affect when a channel can go live, so verify this in the account you will use.

Create a stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream, then choose the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Store the URL and key somewhere accessible to the EC2 process but not in a public repository, shared script, screenshot, or log. Treat the key as a credential, separate from your AWS login.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg configuration before restarting the broadcast.
Use an unlisted test stream where appropriate before launching a public continuous broadcast. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback, including whether audio and moving content arrive as expected.
2. Launch and secure a Linux EC2 host
Choose the host based on the workload
There is no defensible universal instance size in the available documentation. A host that only passes through compatible, already-encoded media has different CPU needs from one that decodes and re-encodes video. Resolution, frame rate, codec, FFmpeg build, and the number of concurrent tasks all affect sizing. Measure CPU and network headroom with your actual source and target settings before relying on the instance for continuous operation.
Likewise, calculate costs from the current EC2 price for your chosen region and instance, storage, and sustained network transfer. No current total can be responsibly stated without those inputs.

Use a restricted administration path
Follow AWS’s current Linux connection guidance for the AMI you selected. AWS documents ec2-user as the default username for Amazon Linux and ubuntu for Ubuntu; the username depends on the image. Its guidance describes password authentication and root login as disabled by default in the configuration covered: AWS: Connect to your Linux instance.
Review the instance’s security group before launch and keep inbound access to what the design actually needs. AWS warns against allowing SSH from anywhere for production use and recommends limiting access to required sources: AWS security group rules. A host sending a feed outbound to YouTube does not need a public inbound streaming port solely for that purpose.
3. Install FFmpeg and prepare its inputs
Install FFmpeg from a maintained package source for the selected Linux distribution or from a build you have verified. Check the installed version and available encoders with the commands appropriate to that distribution and build; codec availability can vary.

AWS has an Ubuntu EC2 example that installs FFmpeg as part of a procedure for sending a private stream to Amazon IVS. It is useful as a related illustration of the EC2-plus-FFmpeg pattern, but it is not a YouTube-specific setup recipe: AWS: Private ingest with FFmpeg.
Before writing an output command, identify the input media or live source, its codecs and frame rate, and whether it can be sent as-is or must be re-encoded. Do not assume a file’s existing format meets YouTube’s recommendations. If you create a script or configuration file, restrict its permissions and keep the stream key out of version control and diagnostic output.

4. Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest; its encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Follow the requirements shown for the specific stream and codec rather than treating one command or bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

H.264 bitrate examples
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate figures on its encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026; the page’s publication year is not stated. They are guidance, not measurements, and apply to the listed resolution and frame rate.

These examples are not interchangeable with settings for another codec, frame rate, or resolution. Choose a mode your source can provide and the EC2 instance can sustain, then test it against YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
Keyframes, rate control, and protocol
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS, as YouTube recommends, and use the ingest URL supplied for the stream.
- Rate control: Use CBR for the recommended configuration described by YouTube.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and frame rate: Choose among the supported options according to the stream configuration and your available encoder. The guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps.
Do not paste a generic FFmpeg command into production without adapting its input, codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and output URL to the actual media and YouTube stream. The sources establish YouTube’s ingest workflow and encoder settings, but not a tested, complete YouTube-specific command line for every source type. The stream key must be supplied securely by your deployment method; avoid putting it in a command that may be retained in shell history or exposed in process listings or logs.

5. Test before leaving it running
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise suitable test broadcast.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect the preview and stream-health status.
- Check that audio is present and synchronized, motion is smooth, and the chosen resolution and frame rate are correct.
- Observe CPU use and network behavior on the EC2 instance while the actual stream is running. If resources are saturated or YouTube reports a problem, adjust the workload or settings and test again.
- Only treat the configuration as ready for a longer broadcast after the test behaves as intended.
6. Operate it as a continuous service
A terminal session is not a sufficient 24/7 operating plan. Configure the selected Linux service manager or supervisor to start FFmpeg when intended and restart it after appropriate failures. The exact unit file and restart policy depend on the operating system and workload; verify them for the AMI instead of copying an unverified service configuration.
Plan for useful, bounded logs, disk-space checks, stream-health checks, and alerts when the process or YouTube feed stops behaving as expected. Ensure logs do not reveal the stream key. Test recovery deliberately, and remember that restarting FFmpeg cannot fix every cause: the instance, network path, source file, or YouTube ingest can fail independently. Monitor AWS charges as well as stream health during sustained use.
Common problems and fixes
