No—not according to YouTube’s documented Live Control Room workflow. Control Room manages and previews a stream; an encoder or other streaming setup sends the video feed. To broadcast a repeating playlist, the loop has to be generated upstream. YouTube’s documentation reviewed here does not explicitly rule out every possible Control Room feature, but it does not describe a built-in playlist-loop command.
What Live Control Room does—and what it does not document
YouTube’s encoder workflow separates sending video from managing the broadcast. The encoder connects to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key, sends the feed, and provides a preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, you start the encoder, wait for the preview, then select Go live. YouTube’s documented steps do not include a Control Room command to repeat a playlist. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
For a playlist broadcast, the pipeline is: playlist source or encoder → YouTube ingest → Live Control Room preview and controls → viewers. The repeating feed must come from the source or streaming setup. If that source stops sending, leaving Live Control Room open does not make it continue sending the intended playlist; this follows from the documented encoder-ingest workflow.
How to set up a playlist-based live stream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder live-streaming tips.
- Choose a setup that can repeat the playlist. Use an encoder or other streaming setup that actually outputs the videos in sequence and loops them. YouTube’s cited instructions do not endorse a particular looping product, so confirm that the setup supports repeat playback and can keep sending a feed for the duration you need.
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube notes that reusing stream settings copies settings and a stream key; it does not create or repeat the video feed. Current controls may vary, so check the stream’s settings in Studio.
- Start the source and verify the preview. Start the encoder before going live, confirm that the expected playlist appears in the Control Room preview, and check both picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, click Go live after the preview is available.
- Monitor the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring streams, checking audio and video quality, testing failover, and checking local archives. Those are event-oriented tips, but they are useful for a long-running feed too.
- End it deliberately. YouTube’s documented workflow says to stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream. Do not assume that leaving Auto-stop or Auto-start enabled will loop content.
Why Auto-start and Auto-stop are not playlist looping
YouTube offers Auto-start and Auto-stop stream settings. The settings documentation describes these as controls for starting or stopping streaming from the encoder—not for repeating the playlist itself. Likewise, reusing stream settings reuses configuration; it does not generate a video feed. Check the options shown for your particular stream and encoder rather than assuming they are enabled or provide continuous playback. See YouTube’s stream settings documentation.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup guidance. The cited documentation does not fully explain what happens to archiving at or beyond 12 hours, so do not treat the under-12-hour statement as a guarantee that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archive. If you need a recording, plan a separate local archive where possible and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a single uninterrupted stream.
Reliability, stream keys, and common problems
- The preview is blank or the stream never arrives: Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the stream URL and key for the correct stream. Start the encoder, then wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The playlist plays once and stops: The source is not repeating its feed. Enable looping in the upstream player or encoder, or use a setup that supports playlist repetition; Control Room’s documented controls do not provide the loop.
- The broadcast drops when the computer or source stops: The feed depends on the system sending it. Keep that source running and test recovery or failover in advance. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring the stream.
- You cannot start live streaming: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, as described in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. The cited page does not establish the full archive behavior at or beyond that duration.
- Your stream key may be exposed: Treat it as a credential. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control your stream. If it is exposed, replace it in the stream settings and update the encoder using the new key. See YouTube’s stream settings documentation.
