You can earn from a gaming audience without relying on YouTube ads: sell memberships or written work, offer podcast subscriptions, accept live-stream fan support, earn from disclosed affiliate recommendations or sponsorships, and sell digital products or services. The right mix depends on what your audience values, where it lives, and what you can reliably deliver—not on a promise of typical earnings.
Choose a revenue model that fits your gaming content
Start with the audience relationship you already have. Viewers who want to talk with you may value a community or membership; fans who follow your analysis may pay for a newsletter or podcast; players seeking practical help may buy a guide, template, course, or consultation. A model can diversify income, but each one adds work and may involve platform fees or eligibility rules.
- Recurring support: memberships, paid newsletters, and podcast subscriptions work when you can deliver a continuing benefit.
- One-time purchases: guides, templates, courses, and other digital products suit specific problems or expertise.
- Audience-supported live content: fan-funding tools can fit streams and community events, subject to eligibility and payout rules.
- Commercial recommendations: sponsorships and affiliate links can fit products relevant to your audience, provided you disclose material relationships clearly.
- Advertising: podcast ad programs may provide another revenue stream, but access and revenue depend on the program and advertiser demand.
These models are not interchangeable. Compare them by audience fit, geography, platform terms and fees, whether revenue recurs, how directly you can reach supporters, and the production and support work you must keep doing. Audience ownership is a spectrum: check provider terms, subscriber-list access and export options, and platform rules rather than assuming a follower or subscriber list is fully portable.
Memberships, newsletters, and publications
Offer a membership when fans want ongoing access
A paid membership can exchange recurring payments for exclusive posts, community access, bonus content, or other perks. Patreon documents monthly and annual memberships, community features, and one-time digital product sales. The trade-off is recurring delivery: members need a clear reason to stay, and you need a sustainable schedule for creating and supporting the offer.

Fees also affect what you keep. Patreon says creators who publish a page after August 4, 2025 use its standard 10% platform fee, plus applicable taxes and payment-processing fees. Some legacy pages retain older pricing under specific conditions, including continuous publication. Check the current terms that apply to your page in Patreon’s Creator fees overview, updated September 11, 2026.
Use a paid newsletter for writing readers value directly
A newsletter can sell access to some or all of your writing: for example, game analysis, strategy, industry commentary, or a regular roundup. It works best when readers value your perspective enough to return, not simply when you can publish often. Consider how the service handles fees, subscriber relationships, exports, publishing workflow, and discovery before choosing one.
Substack’s agreement allows free or paid publications and says creators set prices; its revenue-share percentage is set during registration, so do not rely on an older quoted fee. The agreement states, “First and foremost, you own what you create.” That statement is from Substack’s Publisher Agreement, last updated July 20, 2026; it does not by itself answer every question about subscriber access or portability, which depends on the agreement and product terms.

Monetize podcasts and live streams
Podcast subscriptions and advertising
Gaming podcasts can offer bonus episodes or subscriber perks through a subscription product or membership integration. Spotify for Creators’ page describes direct subscriptions and integrations with Patreon, Substack, and Supporting Cast. Its listed direct-subscription criteria include two published episodes, 100 unique Spotify listeners in the last 60 days, eligible-market status, and hosting conditions. Eligibility can change, so confirm the current requirements and availability for your show and country on Spotify for Creators’ monetization page (accessed October 3, 2026).

For ads monetized by Spotify, the page says creators earn 50% of revenue recognized for each ad; transactional fees apply and advertiser revenue varies. That is a stated program share, not an estimate of what a particular show will earn.
Live-stream fan funding
Platforms may offer monetization tools before every creator qualifies for payouts. Twitch’s May 13, 2026 announcement says payouts still require Affiliate or Partner status. It announced these Affiliate milestones: four hours streamed, four different streaming days, at least three average concurrent viewers on four different days, and 25 followers. Treat these as date-specific criteria and recheck Twitch’s announcement and current account guidance before planning around them.

For games, fan support is most sustainable when it supports an experience viewers already value—such as regular streams, community play, or thoughtful commentary—rather than interrupting the content with constant asks. Platform features, market availability, and payout conditions vary.
Affiliate recommendations and sponsorships
Recommend games, hardware, services, or other products only when they genuinely fit the audience and the claim you make. Do not imply you used or tested something unless that is true. Sponsorships and affiliate links can create income, but they also create a material relationship readers or viewers need to understand.

U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance says disclosures should be clear and conspicuous near the endorsement or link. For a video containing affiliate links, disclose both in the video and near the links in its description. Plain language such as “I earn a commission if you buy through these links” is clearer than an ambiguous tag or a disclosure buried on a profile. The FTC gives the example, “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking. This is U.S. guidance; creators elsewhere should check local disclosure rules too.

Sell a digital product or service
A digital product can turn expertise into a one-time offer: examples include a game-specific guide, a planning template, a course, or a paid consultation. Choose a concrete audience problem and describe exactly what the buyer receives, how it is delivered, and what support—if any—is included. One-time sales avoid the promise of a continuing membership benefit, but they still require creation, delivery, updates where relevant, and customer support.
Patreon documents one-time digital product sales as well as memberships. The available evidence here does not establish comparable fees or features across the wider range of course, storefront, and payment providers, so compare their current terms directly rather than assuming one is cheapest or best.

Building income outside YouTube does not remove the need to follow YouTube’s monetization rules for work you publish there. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic and bars mass-produced, generic, or repetitive material under its inauthentic-content policy. The policy applies to Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams. Review YouTube channel monetization policies, including its July 15, 2025 clarification, and YouTube Commerce Products monetization policies.

This matters if you use a recurring stream of prerecorded material as part of a broader creator business: keeping a stream technically live does not establish that the content meets monetization rules or that it will qualify for monetization. Make the work meaningfully original and useful to viewers, and check the applicable policy rather than treating continuous playback as a revenue strategy by itself.
Where a continuous YouTube stream fits
A 24/7 stream is a publishing format, not a separate guarantee of income. For a gaming channel, it may support a continuous playlist or other prerecorded programming, but it is not a substitute for an audience-fit paid offer, and YouTube’s originality and monetization policies still apply. A cloud service can remove the need to leave a home computer running; it cannot guarantee viewers, monetization eligibility, or earnings.

Build a realistic first offer
- Identify a specific audience need. Look for a recurring question, format, or kind of access your viewers actually value.
- Choose one offer to test. Match the offer to your strengths: ongoing access for a membership, written depth for a paid publication, bonus audio for a podcast, or a defined solution for a digital product.
- Check eligibility and terms first. Verify supported countries, payout thresholds, platform and processing fees, and how you can contact or export your audience.
- State the value and limits plainly. Tell supporters what they receive, how often, how payment works, and what is not included.
- Budget the delivery workload. Account for publishing, moderation, support, fulfillment, and updates before setting a schedule or price.
- Review what people use and renew. Improve the offer based on real participation and feedback; do not infer a typical income from another creator’s results.
There is no source-backed comparison of typical take-home earnings across memberships, ads, sponsorships, affiliate sales, and products. The Council of the European Union cites an estimate of EUR 230 billion in global creator-economy value in 2023, equal to 15% of global media and entertainment revenue; it attributes that estimate to Doug Shapiro’s 2024 work and notes a 2023 exchange rate. That is an estimate of market scale, not creator income. See Council document ST 12608/2025.
