How to Keep an OBS YouTube Stream Running After Closing SSH on Vultr

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep an OBS stream running after you disconnect from Vultr, run OBS on the server’s Ubuntu desktop, start streaming, confirm YouTube is receiving the feed, then close the remote desktop connection—not the server. OBS must remain running and the Vultr instance must stay on. Disconnecting does not protect against OBS crashing, a server restart or shutdown, or a network failure.

What closing SSH does—and does not—do

SSH is a remote connection to your server; it is not the stream itself. In Vultr’s documented workflow, OBS runs in an Ubuntu desktop session. Once OBS is streaming from the server, ending your remote desktop connection can leave that OBS process running. The desktop connection and the server are separate: shutting down or restarting the instance will interrupt the stream.

This workflow is not simply a matter of starting a background command in SSH. Vultr’s guide uses the graphical OBS application in a desktop environment. A terminal multiplexer such as tmux or screen does not, by itself, provide or preserve the graphical session OBS needs.

Prepare the Vultr server

Vultr’s 2025 OBS and Ubuntu guide specifies a fresh Ubuntu server with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth for its example. These are the guide’s stated prerequisites, not a guarantee that every OBS scene, resolution, or encoder workload will run well on that size. You also need SSH access as a non-root user with sudo privileges, plus a desktop environment for the graphical OBS workflow.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Deploy the Ubuntu server and connect over SSH using a non-root account with sudo privileges.
  2. Install a desktop environment, OBS Studio, and FFmpeg following Vultr’s OBS Studio on Ubuntu guide. The guide’s workflow requires the desktop because you configure and operate OBS graphically.
  3. Check the OBS Project’s current Linux installation instructions for supported builds and compatibility with the Ubuntu image you plan to deploy. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 or later as a Linux requirement.

Configure OBS and YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains that the key tells YouTube where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it.
  2. Enter the YouTube service, destination URL, and stream key in OBS, and check the settings against the stream you selected. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  3. Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls for the selected stream. Do not assume these settings will start or stop the stream in the way you want; confirm their state explicitly.
  4. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and configure automatic reconnect. Vultr recommends a retry delay of 3 seconds or less and at least 1000 maximum retries. These values affect reconnect attempts after an interruption; they do not restart OBS if its process exits or bring a stopped server back online.

Start the stream, disconnect, and verify

  1. Start streaming in OBS while connected to the Ubuntu desktop.
  2. Before disconnecting, check YouTube in a browser or Live Control Room and confirm it is receiving the feed. Do not treat OBS showing an active stream as the only check.
  3. End the Ubuntu desktop connection. Vultr’s guide explicitly makes disconnecting from the desktop the final step, while keeping the stream active.
  4. Keep the Vultr instance running. If you need to check the setup later, reconnect to the desktop and inspect OBS for an error or a stopped stream.

Monitor performance and recover from interruptions

A persistent remote session does not guarantee smooth output. Monitor OBS CPU use and the YouTube stream health. Vultr advises keeping CPU use below 90% to avoid dropped frames and buffering; this is the vendor’s guidance, not a universal cutoff for every scene or workload. If CPU use is high or frames are dropping, reduce the output resolution or consider an instance with more vCPUs, then verify the resulting stream.

  • YouTube stops receiving the feed after disconnect: Reconnect to the desktop and check whether OBS is still open and streaming. Confirm the server has not been shut down or restarted and that the selected YouTube stream, destination URL, and key are correct.
  • OBS reconnects repeatedly or the stream buffers: Check the OBS status and CPU use, then review the output workload and available server resources. OBS reconnect settings retry a connection; they do not resolve an overloaded server or a failed OBS process.
  • The stream does not start as expected: Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings for the selected stream, then confirm OBS is sending to the correct destination with a valid key.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS before streaming again.
  • The stream ends after server maintenance or shutdown: Start the instance, reconnect to its desktop, and inspect or relaunch OBS. Automatic reconnect cannot recover a process or server that is no longer running.

Alternative: Vultr Broadcaster Marketplace App

Vultr also documents its Broadcaster Marketplace App as a browser-accessible OBS option with preconfigured streaming settings and deployment on a Vultr instance. It is a separate route, not a required part of the standard Ubuntu desktop setup. Check current instance availability, pricing, and configuration before deploying; those details can vary.
