First find out which part is failing: FFmpeg may be exiting, its media input may be breaking, the VPS may be losing its outbound connection, or YouTube may be rejecting or losing the ingest. Those failures need different fixes. Save FFmpeg’s timestamped logs and exit status, compare them with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and a local recording, and check CPU use and sustained outbound capacity before changing settings. Without those details, the cause of a particular disconnect cannot be determined.
Identify what “disconnecting” means
At the next interruption, note the exact time and determine which of these states applies. A stream that vanishes from the viewer’s perspective does not by itself tell you whether FFmpeg stopped or YouTube lost the incoming feed.
| What you observe | What to capture | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits | Exit status, timestamped standard error (stderr), and the final log lines | A process or command failure from a still-running process whose output has stalled |
| FFmpeg remains running, but output stops | Logs around the interruption, whether the output is progressing, and the time YouTube reports a problem | A stalled input, encoder, or outgoing connection from a clean process exit |
| YouTube loses the incoming stream | Live Control Room stream health and messages, matched to FFmpeg’s timestamps | An ingest-side warning or transport interruption from a problem visible only on the VPS |
Keep logs from before and after the event, not just the final error. A timestamped timeline makes it possible to compare what FFmpeg reported with what YouTube showed. Do not publish or send your stream key with logs or screenshots: it is a credential.

Check YouTube Live Control Room
During or immediately after an interruption, inspect stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also points operators to the encoder output, dashboard errors, CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare the local archive with the live output
If the local recording has missing or corrupted audio or video at the same time as the stream problem, investigate the media input and encoding path. If the recording looks healthy while the outgoing stream fails, transport or YouTube ingest deserves closer investigation. This comparison narrows the search; it does not prove a particular cause.
Check CPU load and the VPS connection
Look at CPU load during the failure, not only when the stream is idle. Check whether the VPS has sustained outbound capacity for the configured video and audio bitrates, and whether that capacity varies or drops under load. YouTube advises selecting a stream quality that the available connection can reliably sustain and testing upload bitrate. A single speed test cannot establish what the connection was doing at the time of a later interruption.

Check bitrate and encoder settings against YouTube guidance
Compare your actual FFmpeg output settings with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Its H.264 table lists 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30 as recommended bitrates; the page does not state a publication year. These are settings recommendations, not evidence that bitrate caused a disconnect. Include audio bitrate when comparing your stream’s total outbound load with the VPS connection, and allow headroom for variation rather than targeting a connection limit.
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. Check what your command actually sends rather than assuming its settings from the source file. YouTube recommends RTMPS; FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Do not treat HTTP reconnect flags as an RTMP fix
FFmpeg’s protocol reference documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry or delay limits in its HTTP protocol section. That documentation does not make them universal repair options for an RTMP or RTMPS output session. Before using an option, verify that it applies to the protocol in question, that your installed FFmpeg build supports it, and that it is placed correctly in the command. The project’s current documentation can differ from the version or build packaged by your VPS distribution. FFmpeg protocol documentation
Do not add flags just because their names sound relevant. A reconnect setting for an HTTP input is not proof that FFmpeg can recover a YouTube output session after that session drops.

Use process supervision only for process exits
A service manager can restart FFmpeg after the process exits. That is useful for an unattended process failure, but it is not the same as resuming the previous YouTube ingest session, and it will not repair a persistent network-capacity or routing fault. Check the service logs and restart timing alongside FFmpeg and YouTube timestamps so a restart loop does not obscure the original failure. A community operations note showing FFmpeg under systemd is an example configuration, not evidence that systemd fixes every disconnect. Example operations discussion
Work through the failure by layer
- Preserve evidence: record the failure time, whether FFmpeg exited, its exit status and stderr, and the last successful output.
- Check YouTube’s side: match Live Control Room health and messages to the FFmpeg timeline.
- Check the media path: compare the local recording with the live preview and look for source or encoding faults.
- Check the machine and connection: inspect CPU load and test whether outbound capacity can reliably carry the configured video and audio bitrate.
- Verify protocol and settings: confirm the actual codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, bitrate, and whether the output uses RTMPS.
- Choose a recovery that matches the evidence: restart a process that exits; investigate transport or ingest when the process remains up but delivery fails. Do not assume a restart or HTTP reconnect option repairs an RTMP/RTMPS session.
Or let it run in the cloud
