YouTube Studio vs OBS for a 24/7 Prerecorded Live Stream

Short answer: YouTube Studio and OBS do different jobs, so for a do-it-yourself 24/7 prerecorded stream you generally use both. Schedule and control the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; use OBS as the encoder that loops a video or playlist and sends it to YouTube. Studio alone does not provide the documented local-file looping workflow, and neither Studio scheduling nor OBS guarantees unattended continuity.

What YouTube Studio does—and what OBS does

Decision YouTube Studio / Live Control Room OBS Studio
Main role Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast, manage its metadata and stream settings, and preview the incoming feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream setup. Encode and send the audio and video feed to YouTube. OBS also provides local media sources and recording.
Prerecorded playback The cited Studio documentation covers scheduling and encoder setup, not looping a local video file or playlist. Use Media Source to loop one file, or VLC Video to play a playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS Media Sources
Continuity Scheduling does not itself keep an encoder feed online. OBS can send a configured loop while it is running, but the cited OBS materials do not promise unattended uptime or automatic recovery.
Archive and replay YouTube’s automatic archive may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on long streams. Archive guidance · Live-stream DVR guidance OBS can record locally, which gives you a backup independent of YouTube’s archive.

For the local, do-it-yourself approach, the practical setup is Studio for channel-side scheduling and control plus OBS for the looping encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: treat it as private and do not share it.

Before you set up a 24/7 broadcast

  • Check livestream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s livestreaming requirements.
  • Decide whether this needs to be live. If your goal is simply to publish a prerecorded video, uploading it as a regular YouTube video may fit better than presenting it as a continuous live broadcast.
  • Plan for a local archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Its guidance says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete on-platform replay matters, plan separate sessions under 12 hours rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce a complete VOD. See YouTube’s live-stream tips and archive guidance.
  • Expect limitations on rewind. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Set up the stream with YouTube Studio and OBS

  1. Verify the channel is eligible to livestream. Confirm verification and check that the channel has not had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, as described in YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast in Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and use the Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other broadcast details there. YouTube’s interface can change; follow the current encoder setup instructions if labels differ.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service or configure the server and stream key as required by the current OBS workflow, then enter the credentials. Keep the key private: YouTube uses it to identify where the encoder sends the feed and to accept that feed.
  4. Add the prerecorded video source. For one file, add Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. OBS describes Loop as making the file play again after playback completes. For a playlist, install VLC if necessary, add VLC Video, choose the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. See OBS’s source documentation.
  5. Check the picture and sound before going live. Start streaming from OBS so the encoder feed reaches Studio’s preview. Confirm the correct video is playing, audio is audible and not clipping, and the image looks right. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the encoder stream. Its tips also advise checking a backup encoder and verifying local archive files: YouTube live-stream tips.
  6. Go live from the YouTube control workflow. Once Studio shows the expected preview, use the Live Control Room’s current controls to start the broadcast. Keep monitoring both the YouTube feed and the local recording if you are making one; starting the stream is not a substitute for an ongoing recovery plan.
  7. Record locally if the full program matters. Use OBS recording or another local recording workflow and confirm the resulting file is being written and can be opened. YouTube recommends a local archive backup, and its archive guidance does not promise capture of a stream over 12 hours: YouTube archive guidance.

Make the loop reliable—and understand its limits

One video or a playlist

For a single video, Media Source’s Loop setting is the simplest documented OBS method. For multiple videos, VLC Video supports a playlist loop, but it requires VLC to be installed. Check the transition between files and confirm that the playlist itself does not end without repeating.

Long broadcasts and archives

A single uninterrupted 24/7 stream creates an archive risk: YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and long-stream DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If you need an on-platform replay, plan how to end and restart sessions under 12 hours, and retain a local recording for the material you cannot afford to lose. YouTube does not promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will create a complete VOD.

Monitoring and recovery

OBS can keep sending the configured source while the computer, OBS, network connection, and encoder session continue working. The cited setup documentation does not promise that this local setup will run unattended indefinitely or recover automatically if the encoder or YouTube connection drops. YouTube recommends monitoring the encoder feed and checking a backup encoder. Arrange someone to check the stream and have a restart plan appropriate to your setup.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization

Before looping material, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast it. A video being available online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright issues can affect a live broadcast, and YouTube’s channel and monetization policies also apply to prerecorded material; do not assume that changing the format to a live loop makes a video eligible for monetization.

Tool choice alone does not establish whether a channel can earn money from a stream. YouTube says that if a channel is monetized and monetization is turned on for a live stream, it can trigger ads; its live-stream guide includes mid-roll ads. Eligibility and applicable policies still matter. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guide.

Troubleshooting a prerecorded live loop

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Studio receives no preview OBS is not sending to the intended broadcast, or the stream URL/key is incorrect. Check OBS’s current stream settings against the URL and key shown for the selected Studio broadcast. Treat the key as private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS.
The video plays once and stops Loop is not enabled on the source, or the wrong source type is being used. For one file, edit the Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; confirm VLC is installed. OBS source documentation
A playlist will not load VLC Video depends on VLC being installed, or the playlist/source selection is wrong. Install VLC, reopen or configure the source, and verify the playlist entries can be played. OBS documents the VLC dependency in its Media Sources guide.
Viewers cannot rewind far back DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on DVR for a very long broadcast. Check the current YouTube DVR guidance and preserve a local recording if needed.
The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours; automatic archiving is not a guaranteed full-length backup for a continuous 24/7 stream. Keep a local archive. If an on-platform replay is essential, plan shorter sessions under 12 hours and verify each resulting archive. See YouTube archive guidance.
The feed drops during an otherwise correct setup A local encoder, computer, network connection, or YouTube session can stop; the documented setup does not guarantee automatic recovery. Monitor the feed, check the local encoder and connection, and follow your restart plan. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend monitoring and checking a backup encoder.
