You can run a YouTube Live encoder on an EC2 instance in India by choosing an available instance in Mumbai or Hyderabad, connecting securely, configuring YouTube’s ingest details and encoder settings, then testing and monitoring the stream. This is a do-it-yourself setup—not a guarantee that a stream will stay live indefinitely. AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish a particular EC2 size or uninterrupted-stream guarantee.
Before you launch: decide what the instance must do
First decide whether EC2 will encode video or relay a stream that is already encoded. Encoding demands depend on the source, codec, resolution, frame rate and any supported acceleration; relaying avoids much of that encoding workload. Pick an instance only after those requirements are clear, then test the actual workload before relying on it continuously.
AWS lists two India regions: Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2. Instance families and sizes vary by region and Availability Zone, so verify availability in the console rather than assuming a type is offered in both. Compare regional service availability and current prices, and measure route and ingest stability from your intended setup. Neither region is established as inherently lower-latency to YouTube. Choose an India Region and launch an instance
- Open the EC2 console and select a Region. Choose Mumbai or Hyderabad based on availability, price, network testing and any data-residency needs. Record the Availability Zone and confirm your chosen instance type is offered there.
- Choose a Linux AMI and instance type. Match compute capacity to the encoder workload and its required resolution, frame rate and codec. AWS instance network capacity varies by type; a listed network specification is not proof of end-to-end YouTube ingest performance. No particular size is certified here for continuous encoding. A small instance can be a test candidate only if an actual encode-and-stream test validates it.
- Configure storage and network access. Keep the instance’s configuration and any required source files on storage that survives the recovery approach you plan to use. In its security group, allow inbound SSH only from your current public IP address, not from all addresses. The AWS SSH instructions require the instance details and matching private key. Follow AWS’s instructions for connecting to a Linux instance with SSH.
- Launch and connect. Save the private key securely and use the instance’s public address or other configured connection method. Do not share the key or leave SSH broadly exposed.
Prepare YouTube Live and configure the encoder
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the server URL and stream key for the stream, then enter them into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
- Set the output to match your intended stream. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its H.264 recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measured EC2 throughput results. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current recommendations across codecs, resolutions and frame rates.
- Use RTMPS where supported and verify the stream preview. Start the encoder, confirm YouTube receives the feed, and check that the preview, audio and selected resolution are correct before treating the setup as operational.
Test bandwidth and stream health before relying on 24/7 operation
YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup streams if you send both. For example, a single 14 Mbps feed needs more outbound capacity than its nominal bitrate; a backup feed adds further demand. Those recommendations do not establish the throughput available from a specific EC2 instance or the route from that instance to YouTube. Measure from your selected instance and observe YouTube’s stream health during a sustained test. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend testing, adequate outbound bandwidth and a reliable connection.

- Test the exact codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate planned for production.
- Check the stream health indicator and watch for dropped frames, disconnects, audio problems or encoder overload.
- Test recovery deliberately: determine what happens if the encoder process stops or YouTube drops the connection, and confirm the configuration and stream key can be restored safely.
- Keep monitoring in place. A single EC2 host and encoder can fail; a backup instance or encoder adds compute, network cost and operational complexity. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, but the available official guidance does not provide a complete EC2 high-availability recipe.
Estimate the ongoing AWS cost
On-Demand EC2 charges apply while an instance is running, billed per second with a 60-second minimum. The total for continuous operation can also include EBS storage, public IPv4 charges where applicable, and outbound internet data transfer. Because regional prices and instance availability change, check current numbers in the EC2 pricing information and AWS Pricing Calculator before committing. The billing rule is not a complete monthly estimate.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- SSH times out: Check that the security group allows SSH from your current IP address, that you are using the right public address, and that the matching private key is available. If your IP changed, update the allowed source instead of opening SSH to everyone.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the stream key and server URL are for the selected Live Control Room stream, check for accidental whitespace, and verify the encoder is using the intended protocol and can make outbound connections.
- Dropped frames or unstable ingest: Compare the selected bitrate with measured outbound capacity, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and account for a backup feed if one is active. Do not infer YouTube ingest performance from an EC2 network specification alone.
- Encoder overload or failed output: Recheck the selected instance against the actual codec, resolution and frame rate. Reduce the workload for diagnosis or choose a suitable available size, then repeat a sustained test; no generic instance size is guaranteed to work.
- The stream stops after a process or host failure: A single instance is a single point of failure. Arrange process monitoring and restart behavior, preserve configuration, and validate any backup encoder or instance plan rather than assuming YouTube or EC2 will restart the stream for you.
