How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream on Google Compute Engine

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a continuous YouTube Live feed from a Linux virtual machine (VM) on Google Compute Engine (GCE): create a YouTube Live event, configure an encoder on the VM with the event’s ingest URL and stream key, and keep that encoder running. YouTube must first enable live streaming for your channel. A boot-time startup script can initialize the VM, but it is not by itself a guarantee that the encoder will recover from an application failure or an interrupted ingest.

What the setup does—and what it does not

The GCE VM runs an encoder that sends audio and video to YouTube. The VM does not create the YouTube event: you create or schedule that in YouTube Live Control Room, then provide the encoder with the event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes checking the incoming preview and starting the event in Live Control Room when required by the chosen workflow (YouTube’s encoder setup instructions).

This is a do-it-yourself cloud setup, not a complete turnkey streaming service. You choose and configure the encoder, VM, stream settings, and any process supervision. GCE startup scripts can run initialization tasks during boot, but Google’s documentation does not make a startup script equivalent to a policy that restarts an encoder whenever the encoder exits.

Check YouTube eligibility and decide what “24/7” means

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its eligibility guidance also states that users must be at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s current live-streaming status before setting up the VM; eligibility requirements and account status are distinct from whether the encoder can connect (YouTube live-streaming eligibility).

Decide whether you need a continuous feed, an archive, or both

A continuously running live feed and a complete replay of every hour are separate requirements. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single stream lasting 24 hours or longer will produce a complete VOD archive. If the archive matters, plan sessions and recording/archiving around YouTube’s documented limit and verify the current behavior in Live Control Room before relying on it (YouTube’s encoder setup instructions).

Create the YouTube event and protect the stream key

  1. Verify live access. Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the stream and confirm live streaming is enabled.
  2. Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the encoder workflow and create or schedule the event. Follow the current YouTube interface for the event type and visibility you need.
  3. Copy the ingest details. Take the server URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest URL and key provided by YouTube rather than guessing either value (YouTube’s encoder setup instructions; YouTube live encoder settings).
  4. Treat the key as a credential. Store it where only the encoder process and authorized administrators can access it. Do not publish it in a script repository, expose it in screenshots, or share it as if it were a public channel URL. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s current controls.

Choose a GCE VM and encoder

Create a Linux Compute Engine VM in the region and configuration appropriate for your workload, then install an encoder that supports YouTube’s ingest settings. The sources here do not establish a recommended machine type, current VM price, outbound bandwidth for a particular configuration, or the cost of network egress. Compare current GCE options and prices for your chosen region rather than treating an unspecified VM size as a known 24/7 solution.

The choice between software encoding on the VM’s CPU and hardware-accelerated encoding depends on the encoder, VM configuration, and stream. YouTube describes both software and hardware encoder categories, but that alone does not establish that a particular GCE GPU is available, cost-effective, or best for this use. Confirm that the encoder can sustain your chosen resolution and frame rate before leaving it unattended.

Set the encoder’s YouTube ingest parameters

Choose settings for the actual source and the VM’s capacity; no single bitrate is right for every resolution, frame rate, codec, and stream. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and supported video and audio codecs. It says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval (YouTube live encoder settings).

Setting Practical choice Important qualification
Ingest protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP.
Bitrate mode CBR Use a rate appropriate to the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video codec A codec supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance, such as H.264 Check the current settings page for codec-specific requirements.
Audio A supported audio codec and sample configuration Follow YouTube’s current audio guidance and verify sound in the preview.
Example video bitrate H.264, 720p at 30 fps: 8 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps: 14 Mbps These are YouTube recommendations for those specific examples, not universal guarantees. Consult its table for the actual frame rate and settings.

Network capacity must exceed the encoder’s total stream bitrate. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving about 20% headroom, so do not plan to consume all available upload capacity with the stream (YouTube live encoder settings; YouTube network guidance).

Configure the VM and start the encoder

  1. Create the Linux VM. Use a supported public image with the Google guest environment needed for metadata-based startup scripts. Apply appropriate access controls and keep administrative access limited.
  2. Install and configure the encoder. Provide the YouTube ingest URL and protected stream key, then select the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval. The exact configuration depends on the encoder and stream; the sources do not establish a tested FFmpeg command or universal encoder invocation.
  3. Start a test feed. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and displays a preview. Check picture, audio, stream health, and the viewer-facing watch page before treating the feed as operational.
  4. Decide how to start it after a VM boot. Google documents Linux startup scripts supplied through VM metadata. These run as root during startup when the guest environment is present, and run only when a network is available. A startup script is useful for initialization, but its existence does not prove that a failed encoder process will be restarted.
  5. Inspect startup output. Use Google’s documented startup-script journal or serial-console output to diagnose initialization. Google also documents rerunning startup scripts; inspect the current procedure before using it on a live VM (Google Cloud startup scripts; Linux startup scripts).
  6. Test failure and recovery deliberately. Separately validate what happens if the encoder exits, the VM reboots, or YouTube ingest disconnects. Choose and test a process supervisor and restart policy for your own encoder and configuration; do not infer recovery behavior from boot-time initialization alone.

Keep the live feed reliable

  • Monitor both sides. A running encoder process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed or that viewers can watch it. Check YouTube’s stream health and preview as well as the VM’s process and logs.
  • Test the intended quality. Validate the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio mix you plan to use. A bitrate example for one format does not establish that a different format will work on your VM’s network.
  • Plan for interruptions. Determine whether your encoder reconnects, whether an operator must intervene, and how any supervisor responds to an exit. These behaviors depend on the selected encoder and configuration and should be verified in a controlled test.
  • Plan stream rotation around archive needs. If retaining the full broadcast matters, do not rely on a single over-12-hour stream to provide a complete archive. Confirm YouTube’s current event and archival behavior and schedule manageable sessions if needed.
  • Keep the key private. Restrict who can read the encoder configuration and rotate the key if it is disclosed.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check Next action
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Confirm the event is the intended one and the encoder has the matching server URL and stream key. Recheck the values in Live Control Room, verify the encoder is sending, and review its connection output.
Stream health warns of unstable delivery Compare total stream bitrate with available VM upload capacity; bitrate must not exceed it. Reduce bitrate or quality as appropriate and preserve about 20% network headroom, as YouTube recommends.
Video or audio is missing or malformed Check codec support, encoder output settings, and the YouTube preview. Use settings supported by YouTube’s current guidance, then test picture and sound before relying on the stream.
Encoder does not start after a reboot Inspect startup-script journal or serial-console output, network availability, and whether the guest environment is present. Correct the initialization issue and rerun the documented startup process if appropriate; separately test encoder supervision.
Encoder stopped but the VM is still running A startup script runs at boot; that fact alone does not establish process-level restart behavior. Configure and test a suitable process supervisor or other recovery method for the chosen encoder.
Expected full-day VOD is incomplete or absent YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a 24-hour event will be archived in full; verify the current behavior and plan sessions or separate recording accordingly.

Estimate the cost before leaving it on

A GCE stream can incur VM runtime and network-egress charges, in addition to any storage or other services you choose. The available figures do not establish a current machine price, egress rate, or monthly cost for a particular region and configuration, so calculate those in Google Cloud’s current pricing tools for your selected VM, location, and traffic. Include the cost of running continuously, not just the time needed to configure the machine.
