Run your encoder inside a GNU Screen session on the EC2 Linux instance. Screen keeps the session available when SSH disconnects, so you can reconnect and inspect the encoder later. It does not restart a crashed encoder or bring it back after an instance reboot.
Start the encoder in a persistent Screen session
- Connect to the EC2 Linux instance over SSH. Confirm the encoder is installed and its video and audio input is accessible to the user who will run it.
- Start Screen before launching the encoder. Run
screento open a session, then launch your encoder from inside it. Configure the encoder with the YouTube Live Control Room server URL and stream key. AWS documents Screen as a way to keep a long-running command available through an interrupted SSH connection; it does not prescribe one encoder command that fits every Linux distribution or setup. - Detach from the session. In a common Screen workflow, press
Ctrl-A, thenD. The encoder continues running in the Screen session while you leave SSH. You can also let the SSH connection end; Screen is the persistent session, not the SSH client. - Reconnect and inspect the session. SSH back in as the same user and run
screen -rto reattach. Check the encoder’s output and process status. These commands illustrate a typical Screen workflow; package installation and session behavior can differ by operating system. - Verify the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview, stream health, and any messages. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring health while it is running.
Keep the stream key private: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or log. YouTube’s workflow is to copy the server URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder, start sending content, and stop sending content when finished. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain that workflow. AWS’s EC2 Linux connection guidance describes using Screen for a command that must remain available after an SSH interruption.
What Screen protects against—and what it does not
Screen separates the command’s terminal session from your SSH connection. Losing the SSH client or closing its window does not, by itself, end the encoder running in that session. Reattaching lets you inspect the same session and its output.
This is session persistence, not service supervision. Screen alone does not restart an encoder that crashes, restore missing media input, resolve a failed network path, or relaunch the process after an EC2 reboot. AWS’s Screen guidance covers interrupted connections and reconnecting to the session, not an automatic restart policy. If you need reboot recovery or crash recovery, you need a separate process-management design appropriate to your distribution and encoder; the Screen workflow does not provide it.

Set up and check the YouTube encoder stream
Use the Live Control Room credentials
Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover starting and stopping the outgoing stream.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the stated maximum. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264, the recommendations include 5 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 6 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement of your EC2 instance’s available upload bandwidth. Check the encoder configuration and test the actual network before relying on the stream. Test before the event and monitor during it
Send a test with representative motion and audio, then check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and messages before you depend on the broadcast. Continue monitoring while live: Screen can keep the encoder session present, but it cannot tell you whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in the documented encoder workflow; do not treat that threshold as a guarantee for every longer stream or account configuration. YouTube’s encoder workflow and streaming settings guidance describe these checks.
SSH keepalives, Screen, and other access methods
SSH keepalives and Screen solve different problems. A client keepalive may help in some cases where an idle connection is being disconnected, but it does not make a foreground encoder independent of the terminal. Use a persistent server-side session when the goal is for the command to remain available after SSH ends. AWS’s EC2 connection troubleshooting guidance includes a PuTTY keepalive setting for idle-client disconnections; it is not a substitute for session persistence.

AWS also documents access options such as Systems Manager Session Manager and EC2 Instance Connect. They change how you connect to the instance, not how the encoder is supervised. Whichever access method you use, the encoder still needs an appropriate process/session arrangement. See AWS’s EC2 connection options.
Troubleshoot a stream that stops or goes unhealthy
