Start by finding which connection is failing: the encoder may send directly from a Linode instance to YouTube, or a local encoder may send to a Linode-hosted RTMP relay that forwards the stream. In the relay setup, troubleshoot the local-to-Linode leg and the Linode-to-YouTube leg separately. A relay adds another service and network connection to monitor; it is not automatically a reliability fix.
Before changing settings, note the disconnection time, the encoder’s exact status or error, any relay logs, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message. Then work through the checks below, changing one likely cause at a time.
First identify where the stream is disconnecting
“Streaming from Linode” can describe two different setups. The fix depends on which one you have, so write down where encoding happens and which system makes the final connection to YouTube.

Akamai’s published RTMP-server guide describes the relay design, but that does not mean every stream involving Linode uses a relay. YouTube also supports direct encoder ingestion.

Check the YouTube key and ingest URL
Refresh the stream key if authentication is suspect
If a third-party encoder reports an error when starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the current stream key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder. If the software signs in to YouTube instead of using a stream key, YouTube directs users to that software’s provider.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not post it in logs, screenshots, or support messages. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder or relay that uses it.

Use the correct RTMP or RTMPS endpoint
For an RTMPS connection, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a saved RTMP URL is still appropriate. Confirm that the encoder or relay software supports RTMPS.
- If the error says “invalid SSL certificate,” verify the URL first. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to try port 443 if the URL is correct and the error persists.
- If the connection times out, verify the URL and check whether the sending software supports RTMPS.
Use those checks when the observed error matches; do not change ports or protocols at random.

Match encoder output to sustainable upload capacity
Run an upload speed test on the machine that sends the YouTube leg. If the encoder runs on Linode, testing an unrelated home computer does not measure the instance’s connection. If a relay sends to YouTube, assess the relay’s outbound path as well as the local encoder-to-relay path.
- Record the current profile. Note resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, codec, audio settings, and keyframe interval before changing anything.
- Compare output with available upload capacity. Choose settings for the stream’s resolution and frame rate, with headroom for normal variation. A speed-test result is a snapshot; it cannot prove the connection will remain stable throughout an event.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings table. YouTube publishes recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the current table for the actual profile rather than copying a bitrate detached from resolution and frame rate.
- Test representative content. Before an event, test the motion and audio you expect to stream. If stream health or measured capacity points to an overloaded sender, reduce bitrate or resolution and retest.
- Monitor during the stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s connection status. Start the encoder early enough to check the preview before relying on the broadcast.
If you use a Linode RTMP relay, inspect the relay and firewalls
Check the relay service and its destination
- Confirm that the relay process is running and inspect its application logs around the recorded disconnection time.
- Verify that its push destination is the current YouTube ingest URL and that it is using the intended stream key.
- Correlate relay errors with the encoder’s status and YouTube’s stream-health message. A relay guide explains a possible architecture; it cannot establish the state of your particular instance.
Check both firewall layers, especially outbound rules
Inspect the operating-system firewall and any Akamai Cloud Firewall attached to the Linode or its interface. Akamai documents both inbound and outbound rules, so check whether egress to the configured YouTube endpoint is allowed when the relay cannot establish its YouTube connection.

Do not open broad inbound ports just because a sample relay deployment uses them. Ports needed for local encoders to reach an inbound relay are a different question from the relay’s outbound connection to YouTube. Use the relay’s actual configuration and logs to identify what needs to pass, and make the narrowest justified rule change.
Akamai’s service troubleshooting guidance recommends checking firewall rules and logs when an application service cannot be reached. Change a rule only when the evidence points to a block.

Do not treat ping as a test of the RTMP connection
Ping uses ICMP, not the TCP or UDP traffic used by streaming connections. A successful ping does not prove an RTMP or RTMPS session is healthy; a failed ping alone does not prove YouTube ingest is blocked. Prefer the encoder or relay’s connection status and timestamp-correlated logs, plus a TCP-aware check appropriate to the actual destination and protocol.
Retest one change at a time
- Save the original settings and logs, then record the exact time of the next test.
- Choose one change that matches the evidence: refresh the key for an authentication error, correct the endpoint or protocol for a connection error, reduce output demands when capacity or stream health indicates a problem, or adjust a narrowly identified firewall rule when egress is blocked.
- If the relay’s process or logs point to a service fault, repair or restart that service rather than changing unrelated encoder settings.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder early, check the preview, and compare its status, YouTube’s stream health, and relay logs (if applicable) with the original failure.
- Keep the change only if the test improves the relevant evidence. If the failure remains, use the new timestamp and error to investigate the other connection leg rather than changing several variables at once.
Choose direct streaming or a relay for a reason

A relay can serve a specific distribution need, but adds another component whose health must be checked. It should not be added as a default remedy for a disconnection.
