Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s electricity cost by measuring the average power draw of the equipment you actually keep running, converting that draw into monthly kilowatt-hours (kWh), then applying the marginal energy rate for your state, utility, consumer category and usage slab. There is no single reliable wattage or household electricity rate for every Indian stream.
Calculate the energy used by your streaming setup
Use this formula:
Energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × operating hours ÷ 1,000
One electricity unit on a typical bill is one kWh. For a stream that runs continuously, multiply average watts by 24 hours and the number of days in the period, then divide by 1,000.
Monthly energy (kWh) = average watts × 24 × days in the month ÷ 1,000

For example, if a hypothetical complete streaming setup averaged 150 W for a 30-day month, its consumption would be 150 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 108 kWh, or 108 units. The 150 W is only an example, not a typical or recommended figure.
Measure the power draw you need to estimate
Include the equipment that runs because of the stream
Power use depends on the equipment and workload. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; neither category has one general wattage that represents every setup. Measure or obtain a representative average for your own equipment rather than assuming that “a YouTube stream” uses a fixed amount of electricity. Where practical, measure at the wall and include each device that stays powered for the stream: the computer or encoder, router, display, camera, lights, capture equipment and audio gear. Count only the gear relevant to the estimate. If a router or computer would already be on for other reasons, distinguish its existing consumption from the additional power attributable to streaming.
Use an observed average, not a momentary guess
A plug-in electricity usage meter with a kWh display can help measure one device’s consumption. A single meter reading may not capture a multi-device setup, and a brief instantaneous-watts reading can miss changes in CPU or GPU load and idle periods. For a useful estimate, record energy over a representative operating period or take readings across different parts of the stream, and say what equipment and duration the measurement covers. Use electrical equipment safely; do not treat a meter designed for one device as a whole-setup measurement.

Keep video settings separate from electrical power
Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate affect the streaming configuration and may affect the workload on your equipment, but YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations are video and network settings, not wattage figures. Do not convert bitrate into watts. Check YouTube’s settings guidance for the relevant stream format: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Find the tariff that applies to your added units
India does not have one universal retail household electricity rate. The applicable tariff depends on the state and distribution utility, consumer category, usage slab and any eligible subsidy. The Ministry of Power explains that appropriate electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs and state governments may provide subsidies. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 compendium of electricity tariffs and duties provides state and category tables, but utility orders and adjustments can change; check your latest bill and current tariff order.

If the applicable marginal energy rate is flat for the extra units, estimate the energy charge by multiplying the calculated kWh by that rate. If your tariff is slabbed, work out where the added units fall in the applicable slabs instead of multiplying all units by a headline rate. The compendium’s Tamil Nadu domestic example lists ₹4.80 per unit for several lower slabs and ₹6.45 for the 201–250 unit slab before subsidy; its table shows different subsidy-adjusted rates. Those figures are from the CEA 2025 compendium, with a tariff effective date of 1 July 2024, and are an illustration for that listed example—not a current rate for all Tamil Nadu customers or other readers.
For an energy-charge estimate, use the rate applicable to the additional consumption. For the full bill increase, also account for any applicable fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, and other charges shown on your bill or current tariff order. Subsidies and the treatment of charges vary by tariff. Build a reader-specific estimate
- Define the period. Choose the number of days the equipment will run. For a 30-day estimate at 24 hours per day, use 720 operating hours.
- List what stays on. Identify the computer or encoder and any router, display, camera, lighting, capture or audio devices included in the estimate.
- Get a representative average. Measure the whole included setup if possible, or add suitable readings for its components. Record whether a reading is instantaneous watts or energy measured over a known duration.
- Calculate added energy. Apply watts × hours ÷ 1,000 to get kWh. Compare the result with what the equipment would have used anyway if you want the incremental impact of streaming.
- Check your own tariff. Use the state, distribution utility, consumer category, current usage slab and subsidy treatment on your bill, alongside the current tariff order. Apply the appropriate marginal slab or rate to the added units.
- Separate energy charges from the total bill. Add relevant fixed or demand charges, duties and adjustments only when estimating the whole bill impact, and follow the charges that actually apply to your supply.
For example, the hypothetical 108 kWh result above is not yet a rupee cost. It becomes an energy-charge estimate only after you identify the appropriate marginal rate or slab for your own connection. Adding unrelated fixed costs to a simple energy-only calculation can overstate the cost of the stream; omitting applicable charges can understate a whole-bill estimate.
Compare setups on the same basis
If you are deciding whether to run a stream on different equipment, compare like with like. For each setup, use the same operating period and record:
- Average watts for the entire included setup, and how they were measured.
- Resolution, frame rate and encoding workload, where relevant to the equipment being measured.
- Which additional devices are included and which would already be running.
- The tariff category, usage slab and marginal rate used for added units.
- Estimated monthly kWh and the energy-charge cost calculated from those assumptions.
A computer-only reading is not comparable to a measurement that includes a display, router and other streaming gear. Likewise, a per-unit figure without its consumer category, slab and subsidy context is not a dependable cost estimate.
