You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Hetzner Cloud server by sending an encoder directly to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The essentials are an eligible YouTube channel, a protected stream key, a Hetzner server with a stable route to YouTube, and an encoder configured to YouTube’s codec, bitrate and keyframe guidance. This setup can operate without a home computer, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime: the server, encoder, network path and YouTube ingest can all fail.
Choose a direct YouTube encoder, not an unnecessary extra service
If YouTube is the only destination, the simplest architecture is a video source and encoder on your Hetzner Cloud server, sending straight to YouTube Live. Hetzner also documents an Owncast app for Cloud servers, but Owncast is a separate self-hosted streaming and chat service; it is optional and not required to deliver a feed to YouTube. Hetzner’s Owncast documentation
Decide first whether the source is a static video loop, a camera feed or a more complex live composition. That choice affects how much processing the server must do. The reviewed official material does not establish a universal server size, best Hetzner location for India, current plan prices or outbound-traffic allowance. Compare the current Hetzner options for price, transfer allowance and CPU needs, then test sustained delivery from the location you choose before committing.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s eligibility and any current restrictions in YouTube Studio before provisioning around a broadcast schedule. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the ingest details and stream key for the encoder.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Store it in a protected configuration or secret store, not a public script or repository. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Choose a server and verify the India-to-YouTube route
Choose a Hetzner Cloud server based on the workload rather than assuming that every continuous stream needs the same resources. A pre-encoded file loop generally puts a different load on the server than software encoding, compositing or a camera workflow. If you plan to encode in software, include CPU capacity in your comparison; also check current outbound-transfer terms and any other applicable charges directly with Hetzner before purchasing.

Do not assume a particular data-center region will provide the best route from India. Test the chosen server’s sustained connection to YouTube’s ingest service, including the bitrate you intend to send. A short successful connection is not proof that a route will remain stable around the clock.
Configure the encoder for YouTube RTMPS
For an ordinary low-latency feed, use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint over TCP port 443. RTMPS encrypts the stream in transit to YouTube. YouTube also supports RTMP, HLS and DASH ingest, but those options have different codec and latency characteristics; they are not needed for a basic continuous RTMPS stream. Select the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than applying one figure to every stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these example recommendations:
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or HEVC recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a claim about Hetzner’s network limits. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose supported settings for the codec and output you actually use, and leave connection headroom rather than configuring the stream at the absolute limit of measured bandwidth.

- Allow only the inbound access you need, such as SSH administration restricted to trusted source addresses.
- Direct encoder-to-YouTube RTMPS requires outbound TCP 443.
- If you define outbound firewall rules, account for DNS and the required YouTube ingest egress as well as port 443.
- Do not expose the stream key in logs, publicly readable files or screenshots.
Keep the encoder recoverable and monitor the broadcast
A 24/7 design needs more than a process that starts once. Run the encoder under a service supervisor configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Keep logs accessible, monitor YouTube’s stream health and alert an operator if the feed stops or degrades. These are operational recommendations; there is no single verified service unit or server configuration established for every workload.
- Test before relying on the loop. Send a representative stream with the intended motion, audio, resolution and bitrate; check YouTube’s health indicators.
- Exercise recovery. Confirm that the supervisor detects an exited encoder and starts it again, then verify that the stream returns to a healthy state.
- Watch for more than process status. A running encoder can still have a broken source, network problem or unhealthy YouTube ingest. Alert on both process failures and stream-health issues.
- Recheck after changes. Repeat the test when changing the source, codec, bitrate, server, firewall rules or ingest settings.
“24/7” describes the intended schedule, not zero downtime. Hetzner’s German Cloud Server SLA page, last changed 2026-03-16, describes economically reasonable efforts to ensure 99.9% monthly availability for each Cloud Server, measured by calendar month. That is a monthly availability target, not a guarantee that an individual YouTube broadcast will never be interrupted; application, configuration, ingest and other network failures can also stop the feed. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Channel eligibility, ingest URL, RTMPS protocol, port 443 and stream key | Confirm live streaming is enabled, verify the ingest details in the Live Control Room, check outbound access and replace the key if it may be compromised. |
| Connection fails after adding outbound firewall rules | Whether DNS and YouTube ingest egress are permitted | Review the explicit egress rules; direct RTMPS needs TCP 443, and the server must also resolve the destination. |
| Stream health reports instability | Bitrate versus sustained route capacity; output settings and network conditions | Run an upload-speed and representative pre-stream test, select the bitrate for the codec and output, and retain headroom. |
| Encoder stops and the channel goes offline | Encoder exit, source failure, resource pressure or process supervision | Inspect service logs and resource use, restore the source or configuration, and verify the supervisor’s restart behavior. |
| Encoder is running but YouTube is unhealthy | Ingest status, key, network path and actual stream output | Check YouTube stream health rather than relying only on the server process status; confirm the output matches YouTube’s supported settings. |
