Custom RTMP Streaming: How to Set Up a Custom Destination

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up a custom RTMP destination, get the server URL and stream key from the platform you want to stream to, enter them in your encoder’s custom destination settings, save, then check the platform’s preview or status to confirm it is receiving your feed. Use the destination’s own URL and protocol: there is no universal RTMP endpoint or setting that works everywhere.

What a custom RTMP destination is—and when to use one

A custom RTMP destination is a manual connection between streaming software (an encoder) and a platform that accepts a server URL and stream key. The destination supplies both details; the encoder uses them to publish your video feed. Restream’s overview of custom RTMP explains the distinction between entering endpoint details and connecting through a built-in integration.

Use custom RTMP when the platform or your workflow calls for a manual endpoint. Many popular encoders already integrate with major services such as YouTube Live, Twitch, Facebook Live, X, and Kick. If your destination offers an account connection in your encoder, that may be simpler than copying a URL and key. Available integrations vary by software and platform.

How to set up a custom RTMP channel

  1. Confirm the destination accepts encoder connections. Check its live-stream settings or help documentation for a server URL and stream key. If it only offers a built-in account connection, follow that path instead; do not guess an endpoint or reuse one from another service.
  2. Create or select the live destination. On the platform, open the stream settings for the event or channel you intend to use. Copy its server URL and stream key exactly. On YouTube, find these in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, use the secure URL steps below.
  3. Open your encoder’s stream settings. Choose the destination’s preset if one is available. Otherwise select an option named Custom, Custom RTMP, or similar. Put the platform-provided URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field.
  4. Save and start the broadcast. Start streaming from the encoder, then check the destination’s preview, status, or incoming-stream indicator. Confirm that it is receiving the feed before directing viewers to the event. Labels and monitoring indicators differ between services.
  5. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: avoid showing it in screenshots, tutorials, shared documents, or public chats. If someone else gets the key, reset or regenerate it on the destination platform and update the encoder. Restream’s explanation of stream keys covers their role as publishing credentials.

How do I get my stream key?

Get the key from the destination platform’s live-stream settings, not from your encoder or another service. On YouTube, open Live Control Room and select or schedule a stream to access its stream settings and key. Other platforms use their own dashboards and may label the field differently. The key authorizes publishing to that destination, so copy it only into the matching encoder field and keep it confidential.

Can I use RTMPS instead of RTMP?

Yes, when both the destination and encoder support it. RTMPS is RTMP sent over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube Help describes it as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends using the YouTube RTMPS preset when available. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Use YouTube’s secure URL

  1. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab or schedule a stream.
  2. In Stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so make sure you select the secure URL for this workflow.
  3. In the encoder, select a YouTube RTMPS preset if it is available and supported by your software. Otherwise, enter the RTMPS URL and your YouTube stream key in the matching fields.

If YouTube reports an SSL error

YouTube advises checking that both the protocol and server use rtmps. If the URL appears correct and the SSL error persists, its guidance suggests specifying port 443. This is YouTube-specific troubleshooting, not a universal port rule; use the destination’s instructions for other services.

Using a relay service for a custom channel

A relay service can sit between an encoder and a destination, but its plan limits and available features may differ from a direct connection. Restream’s help article, dated March 10, 2026, documents this custom-channel workflow:

  1. In Restream, go to Channels > Add New > Custom RTMP.
  2. Enter the URL and key provided by the destination; optionally name the channel.
  3. Click Add Channel.

According to that Restream help article, streaming to custom RTMP channels requires a paid plan. Restream Chat and Analytics, which depend on platform APIs, do not work for custom channels; change a custom-channel title on the destination platform itself. Restream says an RTMPS URL can be entered using the same custom-channel steps. Check the Restream custom RTMP instructions for current interface details and plan availability.

OBS settings: distinguish workflow recommendations from destination requirements

Entering a custom URL and key does not by itself establish the right resolution, bitrate, or encoder settings. Follow the destination’s current encoding requirements and the needs of your connection; custom RTMP does not mean every endpoint accepts the same settings.

For its documented OBS-to-Restream workflow, Restream’s guide dated April 22, 2026 recommends CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval, Main profile, NV12 color format, and 709 color space. These are recommendations for that Restream workflow—not universal requirements for every custom RTMP destination. The guide documents account connection as well as manual stream-key setup, and says the account-connection route uses the stream card marked Default RTMP. See Restream’s OBS connection guide for its steps and recommendations.

Troubleshooting a custom RTMP connection

  • The platform does not receive a feed: Check that the encoder is pointed at the intended destination and that the URL and key were copied exactly into their separate fields. Confirm the stream has been started and inspect the platform’s incoming-stream status.
  • The connection fails after the key was changed: Replace the saved encoder key with the newly generated key from the destination. Resetting a key invalidates the old credential.
  • An SSL error appears with YouTube RTMPS: Verify that both the protocol and server use rtmps. YouTube also suggests trying port 443 if the URL seems correct but the error remains.
  • The RTMPS preset is missing or fails: Check whether the encoder supports RTMPS and update it if needed. YouTube recommends selecting its RTMPS preset where available; otherwise use the secure URL revealed in Live Control Room and the stream key.
  • A relay’s chat or analytics feature is unavailable: For Restream custom channels, its help article says API-dependent Restream Chat and Analytics do not work. Use the destination platform for functions that depend on its own integration.
