Which Google Compute Engine VM Size Is Best for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

An E2-standard-2 is a sensible first benchmark for relaying one encoded feed, not a guaranteed fit. Size from the real workload, network headroom, and recovery needs.

For one already-encoded YouTube feed that a VM only relays, start by benchmarking an E2-standard-2. Treat it as a starting hypothesis, not a Google-certified recommendation: keep it only if the real stream runs with adequate CPU, memory, network, and stability headroom. If the VM will encode, transcode, composite, or send multiple outputs, benchmark for that heavier workload instead; there is no defensible universal size without the codec, resolution, frame rate, software, and bitrate.

If you want a continuous YouTube stream without operating a VM, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Choose based on what the VM does

Relaying an already-encoded feed

A relay forwards encoded data rather than decoding or changing the video. For a single feed, an E2-standard-2 is a reasonable first VM to test. Measure the actual workload and move up to an E2-standard-4 or another suitable type only if the measurements show inadequate CPU, memory, network, or restart headroom. This is an engineering starting point, not a tested result or Google-endorsed sizing rule.

Encoding, transcoding, or compositing

Video processing changes the sizing problem: software encoding and transcoding can use substantial CPU. Google identifies media transcoding as a compute-bound C2D workload. Benchmark a C2D configuration using your actual codec, resolution, frame rate, software, and target bitrate rather than selecting a size from a generic rule. A GPU may suit some workflows, but without details of the software and acceleration support, a specific GPU or size cannot be recommended.

More than one feed or destination

Sum the outbound bitrates of all feeds the VM sends. Viewer count is not the VM’s upload requirement: viewers receive playback from YouTube, while the VM sends the ingest feed. Multiple outputs, including a backup feed, increase the VM’s outbound demand.

Estimate bandwidth from the stream settings

Use the bitrate sent by the encoder, not the number of viewers, to estimate upload demand. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these H.264 examples:

Stream format YouTube H.264 bitrate example
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These are codec-specific examples, not universal rates for every format. Match the recommendation to the codec and settings in use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload capacity available beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds. Its guidance also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

Understand Compute Engine network limits

Google publishes maximum egress ceilings, but a ceiling is not a throughput guarantee. The achieved rate depends on destination and other conditions, including packet size, number of flows, driver, and congestion. Test from the selected VM and region with the real feed; do not size from the largest number in a machine-family table alone.

  • Google lists up to 1 Gbps maximum egress for E2 shared-core e2-micro and e2-small, and up to 2 Gbps for e2-medium.
  • E2 high-memory configurations range from 2 to 16 vCPUs, with listed maximum egress ceilings from 4 to 16 Gbps.
  • Google says per-instance egress is generally 2 Gbps per vCPU, with machine-family exceptions. For traffic outside a VPC, ordinary machine series without Tier_1 networking are generally capped at 7 Gbps total; Tier_1 networking is capped at 25 Gbps externally, and each flow is capped at 3 Gbps.

These published maxima do not mean a shared-core VM is a sound production encoder, nor do they establish the achieved throughput of your particular stream. Check Google’s current Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation for the chosen family and configuration.

Benchmark the VM before relying on it

  1. Define the workload. Record whether the VM relays or processes video, the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, number of feeds, and whether a backup output is required.
  2. Choose a candidate in the intended region. For one encoded feed that is only relayed, begin with E2-standard-2. For software transcoding, use actual codec and frame-rate tests to compare C2D types.
  3. Configure YouTube ingest. Send to the YouTube stream URL using RTMPS where supported and the stream key assigned in YouTube Studio. YouTube treats the key like an encoder password and address: keep it secret, and reset it if exposed. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  4. Run the real stream as a test. Use the intended bitrate and output configuration long enough to reveal sustained CPU, memory, and network pressure, and verify the feed in YouTube’s preview before making it unattended.
  5. Check operating headroom and recovery. Watch CPU and memory, confirm external egress is adequate, and test what happens when the encoder process or VM restarts. Add process supervision, alerting, and a recovery plan appropriate to the downtime you can tolerate.
  6. Scale from evidence. If measurements show a constraint, test a larger general-purpose VM or a workload-appropriate alternative and compare under the same stream conditions. For a high-resilience requirement, assess a separate backup path and test failover; duplicated resources add cost.

YouTube recommends previewing and testing the stream, monitoring stream health, and testing encoder failover. These steps reduce operational surprises but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Budget the complete always-on setup

There is no single defensible monthly VM price without the region and configuration. Compute Engine machine pricing varies by machine type and region; include the VM, separately billed Persistent Disk or Hyperdisk, and any applicable network transfer in the estimate. Check the actual configuration in Google’s Compute Engine pricing information before committing. A backup VM or second path increases recurring costs.

Plan for YouTube’s live-stream behavior

A continuous 24/7 feed is not necessarily one automatically archived video. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the entire uninterrupted 24-hour feed will become a single archive. Plan separately for archive needs and check the current YouTube live-stream help.

Copyright permission and YouTube’s monetization rules are separate from VM sizing. Use content you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for copyright and reused content if you plan to monetize a looped or prerecorded stream. A technically healthy stream does not establish that its content complies with those rules.

Troubleshoot common sizing and stream problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube reports unstable ingest or dropped frames Compare the total outbound bitrate, including backup feeds, with the VM’s measured external upload capacity and YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance. Reduce the bitrate if appropriate, remove unintended extra outputs, test the route and VM again, or benchmark a configuration with more network headroom.
CPU remains high or the video processing falls behind Determine whether the VM is encoding, transcoding, or compositing rather than merely relaying. Benchmark the exact workload on a suitable compute-optimized C2D configuration; do not assume a relay-sized VM can encode reliably.
The stream stops after a process or VM failure Check process supervision, restart behavior, monitoring, and whether a failover path exists and has been tested. Configure and test recovery, add alerting, and evaluate a separate backup path if the acceptable downtime requires it.
The stream key is rejected or the ingest connection fails Check that the encoder uses the correct YouTube stream URL and corresponding key, and that the key has not been reset or exposed. Update the encoder with the correct key; reset a compromised key in YouTube and replace the old value securely.
A 24-hour stream is not one archived video YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on one automatic archive for an uninterrupted 24-hour feed; plan recording or archive handling separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded video that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a VM and encoder process yourself: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
