Custom RTMP

What Is Custom RTMP Streaming and How Does It Work?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom RTMP streaming is an encoder setup that sends your live audio and video to an ingest address you enter yourself, rather than selecting only a built-in platform preset. The destination normally supplies a server URL and a stream key: the URL tells your encoder where to send the feed, and the key identifies or authorizes the broadcast. In OBS, choose Settings → Stream → Custom Streaming Server, then enter the destination’s current URL and key.

What happens when you use a custom RTMP destination?

Your encoder captures and combines sources—such as gameplay, a webcam, a display, or a capture card—encodes them into a live audio/video stream, and sends that output over the internet to the platform’s ingest server. The ingest server receives the stream, authorizes and registers it, and prepares it for viewers. Twitch describes ingest as the stream’s first stop before it is prepared for viewing (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).

“Custom” describes how you configure the encoder: instead of relying solely on a built-in service preset, you provide the destination details. It does not mean every platform accepts every protocol, URL format, codec, or encoder setting. Get the current address, key, and requirements from the destination’s own dashboard or official documentation.

What the server URL and stream key do

  • Server URL: The ingest endpoint—the destination address to which the encoder sends the stream.
  • Stream key: A private authorization value that associates the incoming feed with your broadcast or channel. It is not the public viewing URL.

Some services and encoders provide separate fields; others use a combined address. For example, Twitch documents a general URL form of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>. Do not treat that example as a universal format: follow the exact fields and format supplied by your destination. Twitch also documents an optional bandwidthtest=true parameter for testing with Twitch Inspector; it disables live viewing during the test (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).

YouTube’s live-stream API distinguishes primary and backup ingestion addresses and provides stream names. Depending on the encoder, the stream URL and stream name may be entered separately or joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME (Google for Developers: LiveStreams).

Set up custom streaming in OBS

  1. Get the destination details. In the platform’s dashboard, create or select the live stream and copy its current server URL and stream key. YouTube provides them in Live Control Room; Twitch assigns stream keys through its broadcaster dashboard. Keep the key private.
  2. Enter them in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose Custom Streaming Server, and enter the URL and stream key supplied by the platform. OBS documents this custom-server workflow in its overview guide.
  3. Choose the supported transport. If the destination offers RTMPS and your encoder supports it, use the destination’s RTMPS URL. For YouTube, the RTMPS address is available using the lock icon in Live Control Room; the ordinary RTMP address may be shown by default (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
  4. Configure output for the destination and your connection. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate to match the destination’s current requirements and your sustained upload capacity. There is no universal bitrate or codec setup for every service.
  5. Start and verify before announcing. Start streaming in OBS, then check the destination dashboard for incoming video and audio and confirm the broadcast is usable. Status indicators and the time they take to update vary by platform.

A stream key can grant access to your broadcast. Do not show it in screenshots, public documentation, or untrusted services. Twitch warns that sharing a key can compromise the channel; if it is exposed, replace or reset it using the platform’s key-management controls (Twitch Help: Stream Key FAQ).

RTMP or RTMPS: which should you use?

RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit. YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. Its RTMPS ingest connections use port 443; Google’s implementation guidance also calls for the destination hostname in TLS SNI so the server can authenticate the connection (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS; Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS, updated September 14, 2026).

For YouTube, select the RTMPS address shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an RTMP URL can simply be reused. If your encoder or device does not support RTMPS, consult its documentation and the platform’s current supported ingest options.

Choose settings that the destination and connection can sustain

Custom RTMP specifies how the encoder reaches an ingest endpoint; it does not set a universal encoding profile. Check these requirements before going live:

  • Protocol and security: Confirm whether the destination accepts RTMP, RTMPS, or another ingest protocol, and whether encryption is required or recommended.
  • Address format: Check whether your encoder expects separate server and key fields or a combined URL.
  • Video compatibility: Confirm supported codecs, resolutions, frame rates, and keyframe intervals for that destination.
  • Upload headroom: Select a bitrate your connection can sustain, within the service’s limits. OBS notes that appropriate streaming bitrate depends on available upload speed and the service’s requirements (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
  • Redundancy: If the platform supplies a backup ingest address, understand when and how the encoder should use it.

YouTube encoder guidance

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not rules for every RTMP destination. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a stream.

Troubleshoot common custom RTMP problems

“The RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate”

  • For YouTube RTMPS, check that the address begins with rtmps, not rtmp, and that it uses the correct hostname and port 443.
  • Confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS and is establishing TLS rather than sending cleartext RTMP.
  • If you are implementing a custom encoder connection, check that TLS SNI uses the destination hostname.

Google identifies the protocol, port, server name, and SSL setup as possible causes of YouTube RTMPS certificate errors (Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide).

“Failed to connect” or “connection timed out”

  • Re-copy the complete URL from the correct live stream’s dashboard and check for missing characters or an incorrect endpoint.
  • For YouTube RTMPS, verify the RTMPS hostname, port 443, and encoder support. A client attempting cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint will not complete the required TLS connection.
  • Check that the network permits connections to the required destination and port.

The encoder connects, but the destination shows no usable live stream

  • Confirm that the key belongs to the selected stream and is paired with the correct endpoint.
  • Check the destination’s incoming-stream status and verify that the video and audio settings meet its requirements.
  • Remember that a successful connection alone does not guarantee a correctly registered or viewable broadcast.

Dropped frames or unstable output

Compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity and reduce bitrate or other output demands if the connection cannot keep up. Dropped frames can also involve capture or encoding load; they are not automatically an RTMP protocol fault. OBS’s guidance treats bitrate, upload speed, and service limits as factors to account for (OBS Studio Overview Guide).

Do you need a capture card?

Only if your video source needs one. A capture card can bring an HDMI camera or console into the computer running OBS; it is an optional source-acquisition accessory, not a requirement for custom RTMP. OBS supports capture cards among its scene sources (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
