How to Keep OBS Running After Disconnecting from an Azure VM

Close or disconnect Remote Desktop while leaving your Windows account signed in and the Azure VM running. Learn how to distinguish an RDP disconnect from an OBS stream failure.

To keep OBS running after disconnecting from an Azure VM, disconnect or close the Remote Desktop client but leave your Windows account signed in and the VM running. Do not choose Sign out, and do not stop, deallocate, or restart the VM: those actions can end the session or stop the computer that is running OBS.

What should keep running—and what can stop it?

There are three separate things to consider: your Remote Desktop connection, your Windows session and the Azure VM itself. Closing the client disconnects your view of the desktop; it is not the same as signing out or powering off the VM. A disconnected session may remain available to reconnect to, but behavior can vary with the connection type, authentication setup and session policies. Microsoft documents different session-lock behavior for Azure Virtual Desktop depending on authentication and policy (Microsoft Learn, “Configure the session lock behavior for Azure Virtual Desktop,” updated June 19, 2025; “Connect to a Remote PC with Single Sign-On Using Microsoft Entra Authentication,” updated July 7, 2025).

Action or state What it means for OBS What to do
RDP client disconnected You are no longer viewing or controlling the desktop. The Windows session may remain available for reconnection. Use this when you want the existing OBS process to continue.
Windows account signed out The interactive session ends; do not rely on its OBS process continuing as before. Do not select Sign out.
VM stopped, deallocated or restarted The operating system and OBS cannot continue running through shutdown or restart. Keep the VM running while OBS needs to stream.
OBS open, but stream disconnected or unhealthy The app may still be running while its connection to the streaming ingest server is failing. Troubleshoot the stream connection separately.

Disconnect from RDP without signing out

  1. Start OBS and check the broadcast. While connected, confirm that the intended scene and stream are working.
  2. Close or disconnect the Remote Desktop client. Leave the Windows account signed in. Do not choose a sign-out option.
  3. Leave the Azure VM running. Disconnecting your client does not keep OBS alive if the VM is stopped, deallocated or restarted.
  4. Reconnect to the same VM and account when you need to check OBS. This returns you to the session if it is still available. Automatic RDP reconnection can retry the client connection after a network drop, but it does not prove that OBS or the broadcast stayed healthy (Microsoft Learn, “Supported RDP properties”).

If the session locks or ends anyway

First identify how you connect: conventional RDP to an Azure VM, Azure Virtual Desktop, or a Remote PC connection using Microsoft Entra authentication. Session lock behavior and time limits can differ by setup and by policy. In Azure Virtual Desktop, session behavior may be configured through Intune or Group Policy; Microsoft notes that policy changes may require a session-host restart. If the host is managed by your organization, ask its administrator before changing policy. Avoid restarting a host while relying on its current OBS process.

If you are unsure whether closing the client is disconnecting or signing out, test with a non-critical session and reconnect to check whether the same desktop remains. Do not infer that the VM stopped merely because the RDP window closed, or that OBS is healthy merely because the desktop session remains available.

If OBS is open but the stream has dropped

Treat this as a connection-to-ingest problem, not an RDP-session problem. OBS identifies an unstable or insufficient connection to the streaming ingest server, bitrate limits, VPN interference and security software as possible causes (OBS Project, “Stream Connection Troubleshooting,” updated September 30, 2024).

  • Check OBS’s stream status and connection indicators after reconnecting.
  • Review whether the VM’s network path to the ingest server is stable and has enough capacity for the configured bitrate.
  • Check whether a VPN or security software could be interrupting the connection.
  • Separate a lost desktop connection from a lost broadcast: reconnecting RDP restores access to the desktop, not necessarily the stream.

Can OBS launch streaming automatically?

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter to begin streaming when OBS launches, and --minimize-to-tray to start it minimized (OBS Project, “Launch Parameters,” May 30, 2021). These can support a planned launch flow, such as after a restart, but they are not keep-alive settings. They do not keep a signed-out Windows session alive, prevent the VM from stopping, or guarantee that a stream survives a network failure.
