For live streaming, the key number is your stable upload speed, not your download speed. Start with the bitrate your platform recommends for your resolution, frame rate and codec, then leave extra capacity for connection fluctuations and other devices. As a practical rule, Twitch recommends having upload speed equal to your configured stream bitrate plus 30%: its example says a 6 Mbps stream needs at least 8 Mbps upload.
How to work out the upload speed you need
- Choose the platform and stream settings. Resolution, frame rate and codec affect the encoder bitrate you will send. Use the destination platform’s guidance rather than a generic Mbps target.
- Find the recommended ingest bitrate. This is the bitrate of the encoded feed sent to the platform; it is not, by itself, a broadband-plan recommendation.
- Allow headroom. Twitch’s general guidance is to add 30% to the configured stream bitrate. You also need capacity for normal variation in your connection and any upload traffic from other devices.
- Test the connection under realistic conditions. Measure upload speed, then run a test stream with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. Monitor stream health during the event.
For example, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for an H.264 1080p30 live stream. Applying Twitch’s separate 30% rule of thumb would mean roughly 6.5 Mbps before allowing for other traffic; this is an illustration, not a universal YouTube requirement. For YouTube H.264 at 1080p60, the recommended ingest bitrate is 6 Mbps, while Twitch’s example translates a 6 Mbps stream to at least 8 Mbps upload.
YouTube H.264 bitrate examples
YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary with resolution and frame rate. The values below are recommended ingest bitrates for H.264, not measured ISP speed requirements. Leave additional upload capacity beyond the encoder bitrate.

These figures use YouTube’s H.264 recommended column; its guidance also has separate columns for AV1 and H.265. Do not transfer a YouTube recommendation to Twitch or assume one bitrate applies to every codec. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough?
It can be enough for some streams, but the answer depends on the configured bitrate and what else is using the connection. A 6 Mbps stream has Twitch’s example of 8 Mbps minimum upload under its 30% rule, so a stable 10 Mbps connection leaves some additional room. That does not guarantee a clean stream if upload speed fluctuates or other devices are uploading. Conversely, a high-resolution or high-frame-rate setting may need substantially more: YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for 4K are 42 Mbps at 30 fps and 50 Mbps at 60 fps, before headroom.
Use a speed test as a snapshot, not a guarantee. Available upload can vary by time and household activity, so test close to broadcast time and with other devices behaving as they will during the stream.

Upload speed for broadcasters versus download speed for viewers
A broadcaster uploads the encoded live feed to the platform. A viewer downloads the playback stream. A recommendation for watching a stream therefore should not be used as the broadcaster’s upload target.
For comparison, Twitch’s viewer troubleshooting guidance lists 7–12 Mbps or higher download for 1080p60 playback, 3–6 Mbps or higher for 720p60, and 1.1–3 Mbps or higher for 480p. How to test before going live
- Check the upload speed. Run an upload speed test and repeat it near the time of your planned broadcast. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before going live.
- Use the actual stream settings. Set the encoder to the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate so the test reflects the load you plan to send.
- Make the test representative. Include audio and movement rather than testing only a static scene. YouTube recommends a test stream before starting.
- Watch stream health. During the test and broadcast, monitor the platform’s stream health indicators and the encoder’s connection behavior.
- Account for shared use. Pause large uploads or other unnecessary upload activity, or leave enough capacity for devices that must remain active.
For Twitch, its FAQ recommends upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%, and notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect what is available to the stream. See Twitch’s streaming FAQ.
Troubleshoot stuttering, dropped frames or disconnections
- Compare actual and configured bitrate. If the encoder bitrate is too high for the connection’s stable upload capacity, reduce it or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Check for competing uploads. Cloud backups, file transfers and other household devices can consume upload capacity. Pause them during a test to see whether stream health improves.
- Check the connection, not just the advertised plan. A plan’s headline speed does not establish the upload performance available to the streaming device at a particular moment. Repeat the test close to broadcast time.
- Investigate local network instability. If Wi-Fi appears to be the problem and both the streaming device and router support it, try a wired Ethernet connection. A cable cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP, but it can help isolate Wi-Fi as a cause.
- Use platform and encoder troubleshooting guidance. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers stream connection issues; do not assume every dropped frame means the broadband plan is too slow. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Twitch also advises balancing bitrate, internet speed and hardware in its broadcasting guidelines.
