Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Closing SSH ends your management connection to the Droplet; it does not inherently stop an encoder running independently. But a command attached to the SSH terminal may end when that session closes. Run it in a persistent terminal session such as tmux, or configure a properly tested system service, and confirm the broadcast is live in YouTube Live Control Room.
What closing SSH does—and does not do
SSH is the connection you use to manage a Droplet. The encoder is a separate process on that Linux virtual machine, and it sends video to YouTube’s ingest service. DigitalOcean’s OpenSSH connection guide explains how the management connection works.
If you start an encoder in the foreground of an SSH terminal, it is tied to that session and may stop when the session ends. If it runs inside a persistent terminal session or under a service manager, you can disconnect from SSH while the encoder continues. That is not a guarantee that the broadcast will remain uninterrupted: the encoder can crash, the Droplet can reboot or run out of resources, the media source can become unavailable, or the network or YouTube ingest connection can fail.
This is the process-lifetime distinction, not a claim that a particular Droplet configuration or encoder has been tested. The right Droplet size and recovery behavior depend on the video, codec, resolution, and encoder; the available documentation does not establish universal minimum specifications.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep an encoder running in tmux
tmux keeps a terminal session available after you detach from it. DigitalOcean’s Recovery ISO guide mentions tmux, screen, and byobu for long-running recovery sessions; it does not provide a YouTube streaming recipe. The following is a session pattern: replace the example command with the actual encoder command and media path for your setup.
- Connect to the Droplet over SSH. Use the connection method for your account and Droplet, as described in DigitalOcean’s OpenSSH guide.
- Start a named tmux session:
tmux new -s youtube-stream. - Run your encoder inside tmux. Configure it with the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not paste a real stream key into a public command, article, screenshot, or log.
- Detach without stopping the encoder: press
Ctrl-B, then pressD. You should return to the ordinary shell while the tmux session remains available. - Check YouTube’s live state. Open Live Control Room and confirm the incoming stream and broadcast status. An ingest URL alone does not prove that a public broadcast is live.
- Reconnect and inspect the session when needed: run
tmux attach -t youtube-stream. To leave it running again, detach withCtrl-B, thenD.
The exact encoder command and its bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, and codec settings depend on the media and encoder you choose. Do not copy settings from an unrelated workload and assume they fit. YouTube’s current ingestion details and the encoder’s supported configuration should guide those choices.

For unattended restarts, use a service manager carefully
A system service can be configured to start an encoder at boot and be inspected or restarted through the operating system’s service manager. That is a different operating model from tmux: tmux is convenient for interactive inspection, while a service is intended for supervised operation. DigitalOcean’s production-ready Droplet setup guide recommends startup scripts for Droplet setup, but it does not supply a ready-made YouTube encoder service unit.
Write and validate a service configuration for your actual encoder, user account, media location, environment variables, and Linux distribution. In particular, protect the stream key, ensure the service can read the media, and check its logs and restart behavior before relying on it unattended. A service can restart a process under configured conditions, but it cannot fix an unavailable media file, incorrect ingest credentials, exhausted resources, or a network problem by itself.

Use YouTube’s current ingest settings
For RTMPS, YouTube’s instructions are to obtain the RTMPS stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room and configure the encoder with those values. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
If you choose HLS instead, make sure the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS workflow and follow its protocol-specific configuration. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. The protocol choice does not change the need to keep the encoder process alive on the Droplet. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Check these causes if the stream stops
- The stream ends as soon as you log out: the encoder may have been running in the SSH foreground. Start it inside tmux and detach, or configure and test a service.
- The encoder process is gone after reconnecting: check whether the tmux session still exists and inspect the encoder’s output. If using a service, inspect its status and logs using the service manager for your distribution.
- The process is running but YouTube is not receiving video: check the current RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room, then confirm that the encoder is configured with them and that the broadcast status is live.
- The stream starts but later drops: look for encoder errors, unavailable source media, Droplet resource exhaustion, reboot events, and network or ingest interruptions. SSH persistence alone cannot prevent these failures.
- You switched to HLS and see more delay: YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. Confirm that HLS is intentional and that the encoder is configured for YouTube’s HLS workflow.
- You used a DigitalOcean Owncast image expecting a YouTube relay: the Owncast Marketplace listing describes Owncast receiving RTMP at its own endpoint; it does not establish that the image forwards a stream to YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo avoids keeping a Droplet, encoder process, and home computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from its cloud service; it streams to YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo for the service details, then start the free day.
