For one modest, software-encoded YouTube stream, Contabo’s Cloud VPS 4 is a reasonable low-cost starting point: its U.S. storefront lists 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and a 200 Mbit/s port. Treat that as a plan-based estimate, not a tested guarantee. If your encoder needs more CPU or you want more advertised network headroom, consider Cloud VPS 6. The right choice depends on your actual encoder load and measured connection—not just the port number.

When to move up from Cloud VPS 4
Choose a larger plan if a realistic stream test shows CPU or memory pressure, or if you are running more than one stream or other substantial workloads on the same VPS. Contabo describes standard VPS vCPU cores as shared; its VDS offering uses dedicated cores and guaranteed RAM. A VDS may be worth considering when compute consistency matters, but that distinction does not establish better YouTube network uptime.

How much bandwidth does a YouTube stream use?
Bitrate is the key input for estimating outbound traffic. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 14 Mbps for 1080p30, with a 5 Mbps minimum; for 720p30, it recommends 8 Mbps, with a 3 Mbps minimum. These are encoder settings for ingest, not throughput guarantees from Contabo. YouTube recommends roughly 20% bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate and a reliable connection. For example, a 14 Mbps video stream needs at least about 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity when adding 20% headroom, before accounting for other traffic. Audio and any additional streams also contribute to the total. A plan’s advertised port rate may look ample against that figure, but it does not prove the VPS will sustain that speed continuously or that the route to YouTube will remain stable.

What settings and checks matter more than a bigger VPS?
YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard ingest. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Confirm the ingest options available to your channel and encoder, then use YouTube’s stream preview and health indicators rather than assuming a successful connection means the stream is healthy. - Test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you intend to run.
- Monitor CPU, memory, network use and YouTube stream health during an extended test.
- Check that the streaming process restarts after a VPS reboot or encoder failure, and decide how you will respond if the host or route becomes unavailable.
- Keep a fallback plan. YouTube advises testing ahead, checking the preview, arranging failover and continuously monitoring audio and video.
These checks are practical precautions based on YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice; they are not reported Contabo benchmark results. The available provider information does not establish a Contabo-specific continuous-stream benchmark or an uptime figure for this workload. A 200, 300, 600 or 800 Mbit/s port specification is not an SLA.

Check Contabo’s traffic terms for a continuous stream
Contabo advertises unlimited traffic subject to fair-use language. Its pricing page says: “If usage is exceptionally high or disruptive, Contabo reserves the right to throttle servers at its own discretion.” Because an always-on video stream creates persistent outbound traffic, confirm with Contabo that your planned workload fits the applicable terms before buying—especially if continuous streaming is the VPS’s primary use.
Confirm that your YouTube channel and video are eligible
A VPS does not remove YouTube’s channel or rights requirements. YouTube says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements before scheduling a launch.
