You can run a continuous YouTube stream by sending OBS’s encoder output to YouTube Live Control Room, but OBS alone does not make a stream failure-proof: your computer and internet connection must remain available, and YouTube may not archive a stream that runs beyond 12 hours. Check your channel’s eligibility, connect OBS with the stream URL and key, test the stream, then monitor its health and make a separate local recording if you need a complete archive. YouTube’s published guidance describes general requirements, not a special 24/7 rule for India.
What you need for a 24/7 OBS stream
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming: Get started with live streaming.
- A computer running OBS, with the video source or media you intend to stream.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate, plus headroom.
- A local recording plan if you need a full-length copy rather than relying on YouTube’s archive.
For a continuous setup, also consider how you will handle power and internet interruptions. A UPS or a backup connection may help as part of your own continuity plan, but YouTube does not prescribe specific hardware or an India-specific failover design.
How to connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Confirm channel eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility page states that livestreamers must be at least 16.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create a stream or select existing settings. YouTube’s encoder walkthrough is here: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the server URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room. If your OBS version offers a direct account connection instead, follow its prompts and verify that the correct stream is selected. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream. Reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Choose settings suited to your upload connection. Set the output resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate according to your content and measured upload capacity. There is no single safe bitrate for every resolution, frame rate, codec and connection. YouTube provides current encoder-setting tables and recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start OBS and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room. Review the preview, stream health and any warnings before making the event public. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Monitor the running stream. Keep OBS and Live Control Room available to check for dropped frames, encoder or network messages, stream health and real-time metrics. YouTube’s computer livestream tips also recommend checking that the local recording file continues to grow and testing backup-encoder failover if you have it available: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer. Metrics and health information are described at See your live stream’s metrics – Computer.
OBS settings and internet capacity for an all-day stream
Choose a configuration that your connection can sustain continuously, rather than setting the highest possible quality and hoping the connection holds. YouTube recommends keeping the total streaming bitrate within your available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. For example, if OBS sends a total bitrate of 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity under the conditions you expect to stream in; other devices using the same connection reduce what is available to OBS. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream: Streaming tips.
Test while sending the sort of movement and sound your stream will actually contain. A mostly static game menu, a fast-moving game, and a music-heavy feed can place different demands on the encoder and connection. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicators and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. If warnings appear, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again; do not rely on a short successful preview as proof the connection will remain stable all day.

Can YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete 24-hour recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance recommends making a local archive backup: Archive live streams.
If retaining the full stream matters, enable OBS recording separately from streaming and verify that the recording file is growing. Confirm that the recording destination has enough free space for the expected duration and that the computer can write to it reliably. An external drive is an optional way to add local storage; YouTube does not require a particular type of drive. A local recording protects against a missing YouTube archive, but it does not itself keep the live broadcast online if the encoder or connection fails.

Keep the stream running and recover from interruptions
- Connection instability: Check OBS’s dropped frames and Live Control Room’s health messages. Reduce the bitrate if it is too high for the usable upload capacity, stop competing uploads, or move to a more reliable connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; interruptions can break the stream.
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key match the selected event, and the encoder is sending the expected feed. Recheck the key without sharing it publicly.
- Stream stops after an interruption: Check OBS and Live Control Room for the error, restore the encoder or network, then reconnect and confirm the preview before going live again if required. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover where available, but does not specify a particular failover setup.
- Recording stops or storage runs low: Check the OBS recording status, destination drive and remaining capacity. Use a separate recording destination with enough space and verify the file is still growing while live.
- Archive is incomplete or missing: A stream beyond 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use the local OBS recording as the complete copy when retention is important.
- Stream key may be compromised: Reset it in Live Control Room, replace the old key in OBS and test the connection before going live again.
Copyright, reused content and audience access
Streaming games, music, trailers or other material does not remove copyright obligations. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and check the rights for music and other third-party material in a live stream. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance also notes that streams can be restricted. Review current YouTube rules and your channel’s status in Studio before scheduling a long-running event; the general eligibility source does not establish a separate India-specific rule.
Before leaving a stream unattended, check the event’s audience and visibility settings, title, and any age or access restrictions you intend to apply. Monitor Live Control Room for status changes, errors and viewer metrics rather than assuming a live indicator in OBS means YouTube is receiving a healthy, accessible stream.
