Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can loop a prerecorded video on a Raspberry Pi and send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg: use -stream_loop -1 before the input file, pace playback with -re, then send the output to YouTube’s encoder destination using your stream key. The exact output settings depend on the video and the Pi; test the complete setup before relying on it for a long session.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with a compatible power supply, reliable network connection, and enough storage for the source video.
- A local prerecorded video file. This method does not require a camera.
- FFmpeg installed on the Pi. Check its version and confirm it supports the options shown below in the FFmpeg documentation.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a stream destination and stream key from Live Control Room.
There is no single Raspberry Pi model that can be guaranteed to transcode every source file at every resolution and frame rate. Before choosing hardware or settings, inspect the file’s dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether it has an audio track. If conversion is required, test the exact file and output settings on the actual Pi.
Prepare YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the encoder destination and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or command history that others can access.
- Choose the target resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube recommends RTMPS where the encoder supports it; RTMPS carries RTMP over an SSL connection, as described in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Measure the Pi’s available upload capacity and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate at the full measured maximum. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and a stream with similar audio and motion.
Set up the FFmpeg loop
The loop itself is controlled by input options. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as repeating an input indefinitely; put it before that input’s -i. The -re option reads the input at its native frame rate and is useful for pacing a file as a live feed.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4 … OUTPUT
This is a command shape, not a complete publish-ready command: the output protocol and YouTube destination, stream key, audio/video mapping, codec handling, bitrate, and other parameters must match your file and the current YouTube requirements. Do not paste a real key into a public example.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose copying or transcoding
- Copy compatible streams: If the source audio and video already meet the selected ingest requirements, stream copying can avoid unnecessary encoding work and reduce CPU demand.
- Transcode only when needed: If the source does not match the target codec, dimensions, frame rate, or other requirements, convert it with settings suited to the target. A transcode adds processing load; verify that the chosen Pi can sustain the actual conversion rather than assuming it can.
- Check audio explicitly: A video without an audio track needs different handling from one with audio. Confirm the resulting preview and expected sound before going live.
Match YouTube’s encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current settings page as the authority for the bitrate range for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Its encoder guidance specifies H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Bitrate needs vary with resolution and frame rate, and higher-quality settings require more upload capacity.
Configure FFmpeg’s output to match those requirements and your measured connection. The correct command cannot be made universal without knowing the source properties, installed FFmpeg build, target quality, and YouTube destination details. Recheck YouTube’s published table when configuring the stream rather than relying on a copied bitrate value for a different resolution or frame rate.

Start the stream and verify it
- Run the completed FFmpeg command on the Pi. Watch its output for connection errors, encoder errors, or repeated reconnects.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check that motion is smooth, the intended audio is present, and the stream health is acceptable.
- When the preview is ready, use Live Control Room’s Go live control if the chosen workflow requires it.
- Keep monitoring stream health while the broadcast runs. YouTube’s guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a guarantee that a stream will remain uninterrupted for 12 hours.
Make a Raspberry Pi setup suitable for longer runs
A working one-time start is not the same as a tested unattended setup. The YouTube encoder guide covers starting and ending an encoder stream, but it does not provide a Raspberry Pi reboot or recovery design. For a long-running loop, validate the whole chain for the intended duration:
- Use a stable power supply and check that the board does not overheat under the selected workload.
- Confirm storage can reliably read the source file for the duration, and that the network connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
- Test what happens after a power interruption, network loss, FFmpeg exit, or Pi reboot. Configure and test service supervision and restart behavior separately if unattended recovery is required.
- Run a representative test with the same video, audio, settings, and network path you plan to use. A short preview does not establish that the system will run continuously for a much longer session.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Incorrect destination or key, failed connection, or output configuration mismatch. | Recheck the destination and key in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. |
| The stream starts but YouTube reports poor health | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate. | Measure upload capacity again, choose settings from YouTube’s current table, and test with similar motion and audio. |
| FFmpeg exits or the Pi struggles | The command may be transcoding a demanding file, or the board may be affected by power, heat, storage, or other system constraints. | Check FFmpeg’s error output, inspect source codecs and settings, try stream copy only if compatible, and validate cooling, power, and storage under the real workload. |
| Audio is missing or unexpected | The source may lack an audio track or the output mapping may not match the file. | Inspect the source’s audio track and confirm the Live Control Room preview before publishing. |
| The stream does not resume after a disconnect or reboot | A one-shot FFmpeg command does not by itself configure process supervision or network recovery. | Set up and test restart behavior on the actual Pi; do not assume YouTube’s encoder workflow supplies automatic recovery for the board. |
Check rights and YouTube policy before looping
Having a local copy does not itself establish permission to broadcast the video or its music. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content policies before running a loop. A technically valid encoder feed does not guarantee that YouTube will allow or monetize the content.
