For a simple, unattended loop of prerecorded videos, FFmpeg is usually the better fit if you can manage command-line configuration, logging, and recovery. Choose OBS if you want a graphical control room for scenes, overlays, and hands-on changes. Neither choice guarantees a 24/7 broadcast: you still need a stable upload connection, monitoring, recovery planning, and a plan for YouTube’s archive limits. If you would rather not keep a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.
FFmpeg vs. OBS: which should you use?
| Decision | FFmpeg fits better when… | OBS fits better when… |
|---|---|---|
| Control style | You are comfortable with command-line tools and configuration files. | You prefer a desktop interface with visible controls. |
| Content workflow | The main job is feeding prerecorded media to an encoder, possibly in a scripted sequence. | You need scenes, visual sources, overlays, or hands-on changes during the broadcast. |
| Automation | You can supervise a long-running process and provide your own logging and recovery setup. | You want to configure a desktop scene and monitor it interactively. |
| Maintenance | You can maintain the host, process, and stream configuration. | You can keep the OBS host running and respond to its status and alerts. |
For a mostly static loop, use the least complex workflow you can reliably monitor. FFmpeg may suit an operator who values repeatable automation and can manage a process without a graphical interface. OBS may suit an operator who values a visual layout and wants to make changes while live. These are workflow considerations, not measured claims about uptime, CPU use, cost, or ease. YouTube’s encoder guidance applies to either choice and does not endorse one over the other (YouTube encoder settings); OBS documents connection diagnostics in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also states that the minimum age for live streaming is 16.
- A prerecorded video or playlist that you have the necessary rights to stream, including relevant music rights.
- An encoder host and a stable upload path capable of sustaining the chosen stream settings.
- A YouTube stream key, configured in your encoder and kept private.
- A monitoring and recovery plan. A continuous stream needs someone or something to detect a problem and respond; platform guidance does not prescribe a universal failover setup.
YouTube requires live streams to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See its current live streaming eligibility requirements and Terms of Service.
Set encoder settings for YouTube
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video ingestion, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For encoding, it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use the current YouTube encoder settings page when configuring a stream; the recommendations can change.

H.264 video bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the listed resolution and frame rate. They are not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the bitrate.
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
The encoder page also gives minimum and maximum setting ranges for AV1 and H.265. Check those ranges directly if you use either codec rather than assuming the H.264 figures apply.

Test the actual stream
Before committing to a continuous broadcast, test the same media, audio, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and upload path you intend to use. Check YouTube’s stream health and your encoder’s connection status. In OBS, rising dropped-frame counts and a yellow or red connection indicator can signal an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
How to stream prerecorded videos on YouTube 24/7
The exact controls differ between FFmpeg and OBS, but the core process is the same: prepare the media, configure the encoder, connect it to YouTube with your stream key, test it, then monitor the stream and the machine hosting it. The encoder does not remove the need to plan for interruptions.

Choose and prepare the content
- Select video files or a playlist and confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and its audio on YouTube.
- Decide the stream’s resolution and frame rate, then choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec and output settings.
- Check playback and audio before streaming. Test the complete sequence you plan to broadcast so that file changes or playlist transitions do not introduce gaps or unexpected content.
Configure and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure a live stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- In FFmpeg or OBS, select the video and audio sources, set the output resolution and frame rate, use CBR, and set a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds).
- Set the encoder to the YouTube-recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate, and use RTMPS where supported by your configuration.
- Enter the stream key in the encoder’s YouTube streaming configuration. Verify that the preview and audio are correct before starting the public broadcast.
- Run a test using the intended media and upload path. Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s status, then adjust settings if the connection cannot sustain the stream.
Keep the stream operational
- Keep the host, encoder process or application, and network connection running for as long as the broadcast is meant to stay live.
- Monitor YouTube stream health and encoder status; plan how you will notice a drop and restore the broadcast. The official encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring but does not guarantee uninterrupted service or specify one universal recovery design.
- For a self-managed FFmpeg setup, provide your own process supervision, logs, and restart behavior. For OBS, keep the application and scene configured on the host and watch its connection diagnostics. Neither application choice alone supplies a complete recovery plan.
- If you need a replay, plan a local recording or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
Copyright and monetization are separate questions
Having permission to stream content does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams; its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Reused content is assessed at the channel level and may need significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube says, “Our reviewers will check your channel and content against our policies.” A channel’s eligibility depends on YouTube’s review; watch hours or a rights permission alone do not guarantee acceptance. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
YouTube’s live-stream terms also require the provider to represent that they have the necessary rights for use of live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. An encoder or hosting service does not grant those rights. See YouTube Terms of Service.
