How to Run a 24/7 Ocean Waves Live Stream on YouTube with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run ocean waves on YouTube around the clock with OBS, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with the stream URL and private stream key, test your footage and sound, then start OBS and click Go live in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Choose settings your computer and sustained upload can handle. Plan for recovery: OBS does not guarantee unattended uptime, and YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours.

What you need before starting

  • A computer that can run OBS continuously at your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube does not specify a minimum hardware configuration for this particular workload, so test your own setup rather than assuming a particular CPU or GPU is sufficient.
  • A stable internet connection with sustained upload capacity above your chosen stream bitrate. Leave headroom instead of using all available upload bandwidth.
  • Ocean-wave footage and audio that you created or have permission to use for live streaming and, if applicable, archived replays and monetization.
  • Access to YouTube Studio and OBS. Keep your YouTube stream key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

For a mostly static ambient scene, 60 fps or 4K may not be necessary. Higher settings can increase encoding load and required upload capacity. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers, but playback quality still depends on the viewer’s connection and device.

Create the YouTube encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow.
  2. Set the stream title, description, visibility and available stream options. For an ambient stream, decide whether you want a scheduled start or to begin manually after testing.
  3. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Store the key securely and do not publish it in a description, overlay or screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.

YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow expects you to start the encoder, verify its preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. Starting OBS alone does not necessarily make a scheduled stream public.

Configure OBS for the ocean scene

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is offered as a service, or choose the option to use a custom server and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
  2. Create a scene for the broadcast. Add the wave video as a media source and configure the audio source that belongs with it. Check that the source loops as intended and that no desktop audio, notifications or unrelated windows are being captured.
  3. Open Settings > Video and choose a base canvas and output resolution that fit the source footage and your computer. Choose a frame rate suited to the footage; do not select 60 fps solely because the stream will run continuously.
  4. Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther apart than four seconds. Its current encoder-settings page lists recommendations and ranges by codec, resolution and frame rate; check that table for the combination you select rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are examples, not universal targets: the appropriate setting depends on your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and connection. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1; check current compatibility and bitrate guidance before launch. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the ingest connection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Lower latency can reduce viewer delay but may increase playback buffering. An ocean ambience stream usually has little need for real-time interaction, so prioritize stable playback over the lowest possible latency.

Test before going live

  1. Run a trial using the actual wave footage, motion and audio. A test with a still image or silent scene will not reveal the same encoding or sound problems.
  2. Check your sustained upload speed and ensure it can support the configured bitrate with room to spare.
  3. Listen for clipping, silence, hum, abrupt loop seams and audio-video sync drift. Watch for black frames, unexpected scene changes and unwanted desktop audio.
  4. In OBS, inspect the status indicators for dropped frames or encoding lag. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the preview and check stream health before proceeding.
  5. Once the preview is correct, click Go live in the Live Control Room if the stream is scheduled and not already live.

Plan for a genuine 24/7 schedule

A single OBS session is not a guarantee of continuous service. A power loss, OBS crash, computer update or internet interruption can stop the feed. Keep access to the computer and network available for recovery, and test the recovery procedure you intend to use; YouTube’s documentation does not promise that OBS will restart output after a failure.

Session length also affects replays. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while one longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive matters, use shorter scheduled sessions and keep a local recording backup. YouTube’s DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.

Shorter sessions require planned handoffs if you want the channel to remain live. Schedule the next session before ending the current one, and allow time to verify the new preview and go-live status. A local recording can protect your source material, but it does not itself preserve a YouTube archive or keep the public stream running during an outage.

Use footage and sound you have rights to

Use original ocean footage and sound or media licensed for the specific uses you intend. Check whether the license permits live streaming, the relevant territories, archived replays and monetization. YouTube’s livestream terms require that you have the necessary rights to the live content.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If identified material remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent a match from disrupting the broadcast.

Do not assume that repetitive ambient footage will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and describes repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially inauthentic, and reused material without significant original contribution may also be ineligible. A distinctive original concept, footage, sound design or other meaningful contribution can strengthen the work, but no particular change guarantees YouTube Partner Program approval. YouTube clarified the policy to include repetitive or mass-produced content and renamed it “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed Incorrect server URL or stream key, or OBS is not sending output Check the stream settings in OBS against the current stream in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch The scheduled stream has not been taken live Verify the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live where required by the scheduled workflow.
Stream health reports problems or frames drop Upload capacity, encoder load or selected settings may exceed what the setup can sustain Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health, test sustained upload, then lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync Wrong source routing, excessive levels, loop seams or encoding delay Monitor the actual output during a representative test. Confirm the intended audio source, levels and sync, and remove unintended desktop audio.
The live stream stops after a network or computer interruption OBS or the computer did not recover automatically Restore the connection, confirm OBS is sending again, and check the Live Control Room preview and stream status before resuming. Do not assume YouTube or OBS will restart the broadcast for you.
No replay appears after a long broadcast The session exceeded YouTube’s archive threshold Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For future archives, break coverage into shorter sessions and make a local recording.
A licensed wave track triggers a copyright warning Content ID may identify the material even if you have a license Check the license and contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel. Remove or replace material you cannot establish rights to use.
