Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor one already-encoded 720p YouTube stream, a Linux VPS with 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point—but outbound data allowance in the chosen India region is the deciding factor. At 3–4 Mbps, a continuous stream uses about 0.97–1.30 TB in 30 days before overhead. Amazon Lightsail’s 2 GB Linux bundle lists 3 TB of standard transfer, but Mumbai receives half that allowance, or 1.5 TB. That may suit a modest-bitrate stream, though the margin at 4 Mbps is limited. This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
Choose by stream workload and monthly transfer first
A VPS that only sends an already-encoded video to YouTube has a lighter compute job than one that also encodes or transcodes video. For a single relay workload, 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB RAM can be a sensible initial range. No cited independent benchmark establishes that this size will handle every encoder, configuration, or continuous-streaming workload.
- Relay only: Start by checking the exact region’s outbound transfer allowance against your stream bitrate.
- Encode or transcode on the VPS: CPU demand depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder settings, and video complexity. Run a representative test and plan for more CPU capacity if needed.
- Any setup: Allow for transport overhead, monitor stream health, and configure a way to reconnect or restart after a failure.
A base plan price alone does not establish that a VPS is suitable for a 24/7 stream: compare the region-specific transfer quota and the likely overage cost as well as CPU and memory.
Estimate how much data your stream will use
For a constant bitrate, estimate decimal gigabytes over 30 days with: bitrate in Mbps × 86,400 seconds × 30 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. This works out to about 324 GB per Mbps per 30-day month, before transport overhead. These are calculations from bitrate and time, not provider-published benchmarks.

YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations include 4 Mbps for 720p30, 6 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Its page gives separate AV1/H.265 ranges; do not combine a bitrate from one codec’s recommendations with another codec. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.

| Amazon Lightsail, Mumbai | The Linux bundle table lists a $5/month plan with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB standard transfer. Its $12/month plan lists 2 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD, and 3 TB standard transfer. AWS says Mumbai bundles receive half the standard transfer allowance: 0.5 TB and 1.5 TB, respectively. See Lightsail’s regional transfer rules. | The 0.5 TB Mumbai allowance is below even the 3 Mbps example. The 1.5 TB allowance on the 2 GB bundle can cover the 3 Mbps example and may cover 4 Mbps with limited headroom; overhead or bitrate variation can use that margin. |
| DigitalOcean, Bangalore datacenter | DigitalOcean says Droplet transfer starts from 500 GiB/month. Its transfer billing documentation says excess outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB and a team’s transfer pool is shared among its Droplets. | 500 GiB is not enough for the 3 Mbps example. Check the chosen plan’s exact quota and current overage terms; shared transfer may also be consumed by other Droplets in the team. |
These are not equivalent regional configurations: Bangalore may be appealing for location, while Mumbai Lightsail has a documented half-allowance adjustment. Decide using the actual bitrate and exact region-specific quota, then compare the monthly total including any excess transfer rather than the base price alone.
Configure the stream and plan for recovery
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over SSL. Its RTMPS ingestion guide specifies port 443 and a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings for the selected codec and resolution, and use the correct stream key and endpoint in your streaming software.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Set the output: Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to stream, then confirm that the VPS can handle that workload if it is doing any encoding.
- Use the recommended stream parameters: For H.264, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds, in line with YouTube’s published guidance.
- Connect securely: Configure RTMPS to a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint on port 443, using the stream key for the intended YouTube live stream.
- Test representative content: YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio. Watch stream health during the test rather than assuming that a successful initial connection proves continuous reliability.
- Prepare for interruption: Configure your process or service manager to reconnect or restart, and monitor both the stream and transfer usage. A VPS size recommendation does not guarantee that the instance or stream will remain online continuously.
Common planning problems and fixes
- The data allowance runs short: Recalculate monthly use from the actual output bitrate, include overhead, and check the exact region’s quota. Select a plan with more headroom or lower the bitrate if quality permits; account for overage billing.
- The VPS struggles while encoding: A relay-only sizing estimate does not apply to encoding or transcoding. Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and settings, then increase compute capacity if the workload cannot be handled reliably.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check bitrate stability, the codec-specific settings, keyframe interval, endpoint, and network path. Test again with representative audio and motion while monitoring YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- The stream stops after a disconnect or process failure: Check that reconnection or restart behavior is configured and monitored. Neither a provider’s transfer allowance nor a VPS specification by itself establishes continuous uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
