If the source is already compatible with YouTube and needs no filters or other changes, copying its encoded streams can avoid the CPU cost of encoding every frame again. If re-encoding is necessary, reduce the resolution or frame rate to what the stream needs, use a faster setting for the specific encoder, and confirm the VPS can sustain at least real-time speed before leaving it unattended.
Find out where the CPU work is coming from
In your FFmpeg command, look for the video codec option. -c:v copy passes compatible encoded video through without re-encoding it; an encoder such as libx264 means FFmpeg is encoding video. Check audio separately: video can be copied while audio is re-encoded, or vice versa. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains stream selection and transcoding, but the correct options depend on the input, output and installed build (FFmpeg Documentation).
Also check for filters and transformations: scaling, overlays, burned-in subtitles, frame-rate changes or color conversion can require decoding and processing even when your goal is to avoid an unnecessary video encode. Stream copy is not a universal switch; it is suitable only when the existing streams and ingest route are compatible and no required processing demands re-encoding.
Try stream copy only when the input permits it
For a compatible prerecorded file that needs no video changes, copying the video stream may be the simplest way to reduce encoding work. If YouTube compatibility or a required transformation calls for a different format, copy only the streams that are compatible and encode the others. A blind copy attempt can fail or produce an ingest YouTube cannot use. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming that a command started successfully means the feed is healthy (YouTube live encoder settings).

Reduce the work if video must be encoded
Choose only the resolution and frame rate you need
Encoding fewer pixels and fewer frames generally means less work per second. For example, changing a re-encoded stream from 1080p60 to 720p30 reduces both frame dimensions and frame rate, but also reduces detail and motion smoothness. Choose based on what viewers need from the content, then test the result; the highest available resolution is not automatically necessary.
YouTube publishes recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. These are platform ingest recommendations, not estimates of VPS CPU usage. The page lists the following values for the modes shown; check it for the current guidance and any mode not listed here (YouTube live encoder settings).

| Ingest mode | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
The same YouTube page gives minimum bitrate settings of 4 Mbps (AV1/H.265) and 5 Mbps (H.264) for 1080p30; 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; and 2 Mbps and 3 Mbps for 720p30/60. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload them reliably. Check that the VPS network path can sustain your chosen rate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its page lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; follow its current guidance for the selected codec and stream mode.
Remove processing you do not need
Every scale, subtitle burn-in, overlay or other filter changes a simple pass-through into a processing pipeline. Keep only transformations the finished stream actually needs. The CPU effect varies with the source, filter and VPS, so measure your own command rather than expecting a fixed percentage of savings.

Use a faster setting for the encoder you are actually running
Encoder options are not interchangeable. For VP9 using libvpx, Google identifies -quality realtime and speed values 5–8 for live encoding. Within that VP9/libvpx guidance, higher speed values use less CPU at a quality cost. FFmpeg’s libvpx documentation likewise says higher speed or cpu-used values trade quality for speed. Do not copy those values to x264 or a hardware encoder; consult that encoder’s options and compare the output at your target bitrate (Google VP9 Live Encoding; FFmpeg Codecs Documentation).
FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so placement matters when editing a command. Verify the options supported by your installed encoder and build instead of assuming that a preset from another example applies (FFmpeg Documentation).

Consider hardware encoding only if the VPS exposes it
FFmpeg supports hardware acceleration APIs including VAAPI and QSV, but their presence in FFmpeg documentation does not mean your VPS has a usable device. Availability depends on the provider, assigned device, drivers, libraries, formats and FFmpeg build. Confirm the VPS capability and device access, then verify in FFmpeg’s logs that the intended hardware encoder was selected. Hardware encoding can lower CPU demand, but may constrain supported formats or filters; no particular VPS plan or GPU availability can be assumed from the platform name alone (FFmpeg Documentation).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test speed and YouTube health before relying on a 24/7 run
For a live encode, FFmpeg must keep up with real time. Google’s VP9 guidance states that encoding speed below 1x cannot keep up with live input and can lead to buffering or breaks in transmission; the exact behavior depends on the workflow and machine (Google VP9 Live Encoding).

- Run the actual input, resolution, frame rate, audio, filters and encoder settings during a representative test.
- Watch FFmpeg’s reported speed. If it falls below 1x, simplify the workload or reassess the encoder and VPS capacity before treating the stream as stable.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators as well as VPS CPU and network use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast.
- Plan process supervision, reconnect behavior, logs and alerting separately for an unattended deployment; their setup depends on your existing VPS and service manager.
YouTube automatically transcodes an ingested live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That work happens on YouTube’s side; it does not reduce the CPU your VPS uses to encode the feed it sends (YouTube live encoder settings).
Troubleshoot common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains high even though the source is a video file | FFmpeg may be re-encoding, or a filter or conversion may require processing. | Inspect the video codec option and filter graph. Use stream copy only if the source and ingest are compatible and no transformation is required. |
| Encoding speed drops below 1x | The encode workload exceeds what the VPS can process in real time. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary filters, or use a faster setting supported by the encoder. Test again under representative conditions. |
| Stream copy fails or YouTube does not accept the feed | The copied streams may not suit the ingest route, or the workflow may require a transformation. | Check YouTube’s current codec and ingest guidance. Re-encode only the incompatible stream or streams that need processing. |
| Hardware encoder is unavailable | The VPS may not expose a compatible device, or device access, drivers, libraries or the FFmpeg build may be missing. | Confirm provider and host support, then inspect FFmpeg logs to verify encoder selection. Do not assume a generic VPS includes GPU encoding. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube reports poor stream health | Real-time speed, bitrate, ingest settings, network capacity or stream configuration may be unsuitable. | Compare the chosen mode and codec with YouTube’s current settings, test the upload path, and check both FFmpeg speed and YouTube’s health indicators. |
