To keep a study-with-me YouTube stream running from a spare PC, use it as the encoder host: configure OBS, connect it to a scheduled YouTube Live stream with the stream URL and key, prevent Windows from sleeping, and test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. The PC must stay powered on, awake, and online; if you want the stream to continue without a computer running at home, use a cloud service instead.
What the spare PC needs to do
OBS on the spare PC sends the video feed to YouTube. The computer must stay powered on, awake, and connected to the internet for the encoder to keep sending. A sleeping or shut-down PC cannot continue the feed.
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee that a particular machine can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene. Start conservatively and use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a hardware- and network-aware starting point.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Choose a simple scene. In OBS, create a scene and add the video and any other sources your study stream needs. Keep the scene uncomplicated while testing; more sources and effects can add workload.
- Set a conservative output. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting point, then choose an output resolution, frame rate, and encoder that the PC can sustain. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all setting without knowing the PC’s hardware and network.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream connection settings. The key is a credential that lets the encoder send to your channel: keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Decide how it goes live. Check the YouTube stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. With auto-start enabled, a scheduled broadcast can go live when the encoder begins sending. A manual workflow may instead require you to select Go Live in Live Control Room. Test the selected workflow in Studio rather than assuming the encoder starting means the public broadcast is live.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Account for other devices using the connection; a general speed-test result does not mean that the full upload capacity is free for OBS.
- Test before leaving it unattended. OBS’s quick-start guidance encourages testing settings before the first stream. Run a short private or unlisted test, check the YouTube Studio preview, verify the picture and audio, and confirm the broadcast is actually visible in Studio.
Keep Windows awake and the connection available
Before starting a long session, check the active Windows power plan and make sure automatic sleep will not interrupt it. Windows supports application system-required requests that can prevent automatic sleep after inactivity, but menu labels vary by Windows version, device, and policy. Confirm the setting on the spare PC itself.

Connection reliability matters as much as raw upload speed. Use a stable connection where possible, leave YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and keep an eye on OBS and YouTube Studio during the test. If the network drops, the stream may stop even if the PC stays awake.
Plan around restarts and long broadcasts
OBS documents automatic reconnect settings and a --startstreaming launch parameter. These can reduce manual work, but automatic launch alone does not ensure that Windows will log in, the network will be ready, or YouTube will accept the stream after every restart. Test the full recovery path, including the YouTube live workflow, before relying on it.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one continuous automatic archive for a broadcast that exceeds that limit; plan how you will handle the recording if a longer study session matters.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- The stream stops when nobody is at the PC: Check whether Windows entered sleep, the PC lost power, or the network disconnected. Verify the power plan and connection during a test run.
- OBS is sending, but viewers cannot see the broadcast: Check YouTube Studio’s stream preview and whether the workflow requires a manual Go Live action. Confirm the scheduled stream’s auto-start setting.
- The connection is unstable: Make sure the total bitrate fits the available upload bandwidth with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check whether other devices or applications are using upload capacity.
- The spare PC struggles to encode: Reduce the workload by using a lower output resolution or frame rate, simplifying the scene, or trying another encoder option available on the hardware. Re-test; minimum requirements alone do not establish that a given configuration will work reliably.
- The encoder cannot connect after a key exposure or change: Verify the current stream URL and key in YouTube Studio and OBS. Treat the key as sensitive and reset it in YouTube if it was compromised.
- A restart does not bring the stream back: Test Windows login, OBS launch, network availability, OBS reconnect behavior, and YouTube’s live controls as one sequence. The
--startstreamingparameter only addresses starting OBS streaming; it does not guarantee the other steps.
