If you mean listening to YouTube Music for yourself, that is a different setup and does not create a live broadcast. This guide covers the PC-based live stream first.
What a 24/7 YouTube music stream involves
A PC-based continuous stream sends preselected music and visuals from an encoder to YouTube Live. The PC, encoder, power and upload connection all need to remain available. That makes it a different task from leaving the YouTube Music app playing for personal listening.
YouTube’s current live-stream help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before configuring the channel.
Set up a continuous PC broadcast
1. Prepare the channel and stream in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the eligible, verified channel and open YouTube Studio.
- Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not show it in a recording, screenshot or broadcast; if it is exposed, reset it in the live-stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
2. Configure the encoder and media
Install and open OBS Studio, then add the audio and visual sources for the broadcast. For a playlist, arrange the media and configure playback to loop; confirm that the encoder continues producing both audio and video rather than stopping when a file ends. In OBS, enter the stream key and server details from YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest.

For a representative starting point, YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for 1080p at 30 fps specify 5 Mbps video. It lists stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. Its guidance also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. These are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated settings, not a universal bitrate prescription: select a resolution and bitrate your upload line can sustain, and consult the current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance for other formats.
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% beyond the bitrate being sent. If sending multiple streams or audio/video tracks, account for their combined upload demand. Headroom helps accommodate variation; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted connection.

3. Test, start and monitor
- Before relying on the stream, run a representative test at the planned resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health in the Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy signal. Then start the live broadcast in the Live Control Room if the stream is not configured to go live automatically.
- Check that audio is audible, video is present, and the playlist advances or loops as intended. Leave OBS and the PC running while the broadcast is needed.
For an always-on PC setup, disable sleep or hibernation while streaming, keep the encoder open, and use a stable wired network connection where practical. Keep the PC and router on reliable power. A UPS sized for their actual load and the runtime you need can bridge some local power interruptions; it cannot fix an ISP outage.
Music rights and YouTube Live rules
Use music and visuals you have the rights to livestream. If you plan to keep the stream archive, make sure your rights also cover that use. Paying to listen to a track, owning a copy, or having a personal music subscription does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If copyrighted material remains in a broadcast, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even when you have a license for third-party music, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and confirm permissions with the rights holder before going live.
Common failures and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the stream key and server URL match the current stream in YouTube Studio, then verify OBS is set to the intended service and is actively streaming. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- Stream health shows instability or dropped frames: Reduce the video bitrate or resolution, check other devices and applications using the upload connection, and test again. Keep the recommended upload headroom in mind.
- The stream stops when you leave the PC: Check Windows or macOS power settings for sleep, hibernation or shutdown timers. The computer and encoder must stay active for this local-PC method.
- The encoder disconnects: Restore the internet connection and check YouTube’s Live Control Room. OBS offers automatic reconnect, which can help with some interruptions, but it cannot recover from every failure or keep broadcasting through a prolonged network or power outage. - The broadcast is interrupted after music begins: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and address the matched material. Do not assume a streaming or listening subscription is rebroadcast permission; obtain the necessary livestream rights and channel allowlisting where required.

Personal background listening is not a livestream and does not grant rights to rebroadcast music. Google’s India announcement dated 12 March 2026 said Premium Lite background play and downloads were rolling out in India for most videos. Google said YouTube Premium remained the option for background playback that includes music content and YouTube Music Premium.
