A Media Source plays an individual file and can loop it; OBS’s built-in VLC Video source can hold a playlist. YouTube’s repeat button is a separate, viewer-side control and will not change which local files OBS sends to your live stream.
Check which OBS source is playing
In OBS, select the scene that is currently live and inspect its Sources list. Select the media source and open its properties. OBS describes Media Source as a source for an individual media file, with a Loop option. If the source points to one clip and Loop is enabled, that clip can repeat indefinitely rather than advancing to other files. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
For a sequence of local video files, use the built-in VLC Video source rather than expecting a single-file Media Source to advance through a playlist. OBS’s Sources Guide explains the role of sources in a scene.
Set up and check the VLC playlist
- Confirm VLC Video is the source in the live scene. If you cannot find that source type, install VLC. OBS notes that VLC Video requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Open the VLC Video source properties and inspect the playlist entries. Make sure the intended, distinct video files are present and that their order is correct.
- Choose whether the playlist should repeat. OBS defines
Loop Playlistas restarting the source after it runs out of media files. Turn it on if the list should start again after its last item; turn it off if it should stop at the end. - Choose whether order matters. Turn off
Shuffle Playlistto play files in listed order. Turn it on only if you want OBS to randomize the sequence. - Check visibility behavior. VLC Video has options that can stop playback while the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If playback changes after switching scenes or hiding the source, inspect those settings.
The controls and their descriptions are in OBS’s Media Sources documentation. Exact behavior in a particular scene can depend on its setup, so test changes with a copy of the scene before relying on them during a live broadcast.

Keep YouTube’s repeat control separate
YouTube’s repeat setting applies to a viewer watching a YouTube video or playlist. It does not choose or advance the local media files playing through OBS. Changing YouTube’s viewer-side repeat control therefore will not fix an OBS source that is looping one file. YouTube explains its playback controls in Loop videos or playlists on YouTube – Computer.
If the playlist restarts after you edit it live
A user in the OBS forum reported playback returning to the first video after adding media to a running stream. That thread is an individual report, not proof of a universal OBS or VLC behavior. If your problem occurs only after changing the playlist during a broadcast, note your OBS and VLC versions, reproduce the change using a copy of the scene, and avoid depending on an untested live edit. Common symptoms and fixes
| What you see | What to check |

| The same clip repeats | Confirm whether the scene uses a single-file Media Source with Loop enabled. For multiple files, configure a VLC Video playlist. |
| The list repeats from the beginning | That is the expected effect of Loop Playlist when the source reaches the end. Turn it off if the list should stop. |
| Clips play in an unexpected order | Check that the playlist entries and their order are correct, then review Shuffle Playlist. |
| Playback changes after switching scenes | Check VLC Video’s visibility options, including stopping when hidden and restarting when visible. |

OBS forum listings include third-party playlist plugins, such as Media Playlist Source. Treat a plugin as an optional alternative, not a guaranteed fix: check its compatibility with your OBS version and platform, playlist-editing behavior, and stated limitations before installing it. The built-in VLC Video source is the first place to check for the specific single-file-versus-playlist issue.
