For a do-it-yourself setup, enable livestreaming, create a scheduled event, connect a continuously running video source with your stream key, then test and monitor it. What scheduling does—and what keeps the stream live
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming YouTube event page that you can share and that may appear in subscribers’ feeds with a “Notify me” option. It does not provide the video feed. An encoder—software, hardware, or a cloud service—must send video to YouTube for the broadcast to run. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan for the whole operating chain: the ambient video and audio, the encoder, an internet connection with enough upload capacity, a way to notice a drop, and a recovery plan. YouTube’s general setup guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for any particular self-hosted or cloud configuration.
Before scheduling: eligibility, media, and continuity
Enable livestreaming and check channel eligibility
Enable livestreaming on the channel before building the event. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its livestreaming tips also state that a channel must be verified and have had no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Clear the video and audio for live use
Use ambient footage and music only when you have the rights needed for livestreaming and any replay or archive you plan to make. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can trigger a placeholder or warning, and unresolved content can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights, including applicable music licensing rights. Decide who or what maintains the feed
With a local software or hardware encoder, the source device, encoder, and network connection must remain available for the broadcast. Decide how you will detect a dropped feed and restart it. A cloud service can remove the need to keep a home computer on, but you should still understand its recovery and archive arrangements.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live, then open the Manage tab.
- Start a scheduled event: Choose Schedule stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous one.
- Review event details: Set the title, description, visibility, and other available metadata. Confirm privacy and scheduling details before saving.
- Save and share the event: Once created, use its event page URL to let viewers know when the stream is expected. Viewers may be able to select “Notify me” on the upcoming event.
- Copy the connection details: From the event’s stream settings, copy the server or stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s corresponding fields.
Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your broadcast. Do not post it or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings for stream management guidance.

Connect and test the ambient video source
Choose an encoder workflow
YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders, as well as listed cloud encoder examples. Choose based on where the encoding runs, how much maintenance you can handle, whether the feed can recover after a drop, and whether you need a separate recording. A dedicated encoder box is not required if software suits your workflow. Configure the playlist, audio, and connection
Set the encoder’s source to the ambient video or playlist you intend to broadcast, and decide whether audio should play continuously, change between clips, or be silent. Configure the encoder with the YouTube stream URL and key. Exact controls differ by encoder, so follow that product’s current instructions rather than assuming a common UI or setting.

Preview before going live
- Start the encoder and check that Live Control Room receives a signal and displays the expected preview.
- Verify the stream from the channel or watch page and check playback on a mobile device as well as your main viewing device.
- Listen for missing, clipped, or unexpectedly loud audio and watch for black frames, frozen video, or unintended gaps between playlist items.
- Confirm that the encoder and source are set to continue running, and make sure someone can respond if the feed stops.
YouTube advises preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, verifying playback, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its network guidance says upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate and recommends 20% headroom. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Do not assume YouTube will save a complete replay of a day-long stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends making a local archive. If replay matters, record locally or divide the broadcast into shorter events, then confirm that your chosen recording and archive workflow works before relying on it. Copyright and monetization are separate from stream uptime
A long broadcast does not make media rights automatic
A stream can remain technically online while still being interrupted for a rights match. Obtain permissions that cover both the live use and any planned replay, and account for the possibility that a rights owner must allowlist your channel for Content ID. Do not assume loops qualify for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its inauthentic-content policy and is ineligible for monetization. The policy clarification is dated July 15, 2025. Whether a particular ambient-video channel qualifies depends on the actual material and YouTube’s current policy application; running a stream for longer does not itself establish eligibility. Troubleshooting a scheduled 24/7 stream
- The event exists, but viewers see no video: Scheduling creates the event, not the feed. Start the encoder and confirm that it is using the stream URL and key for the correct event.
- Live Control Room receives no signal: Check that the encoder is running, the stream key matches the scheduled event, and the network is available. Keep the key private; reset it if it may have been exposed.
- Video or audio stutters: Check available upload capacity against the total stream bitrate and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Inspect the source and encoder, then check playback on the watch page and mobile.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the notice and the rights for the matched material. A license alone may not prevent the interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel.
- The full-day replay is missing: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use a local recording or a shorter-event plan if a replay is needed.
- The stream stops while nobody is watching the setup: Identify which part stopped—the source, encoder, device, network, or hosted service—and restore that part. A scheduled event does not restart a failed video source by itself.
