If YouTube reports an encoder start error, check that the encoder is using the matching stream key; if you stream by signing in through a third-party app, consult that app’s support. YouTube does not document a universal Live Control Room restart button or guarantee that a disconnected feed resumes the same live session.
Diagnose the disconnect before restarting
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Select the affected stream and open its Stream view or dashboard.
- Read the current status and stream-health message. YouTube says these messages can include specific errors and instructions, so use the displayed guidance to identify what needs fixing before you retry. YouTube’s stream metrics and health guidance.
There are three situations to distinguish: an encoder reports an error when starting or connecting; the encoder has lost its connection; or the stream event has already ended. The available recovery action depends on which one applies.
Restart an encoder that uses a stream key
For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube’s documented troubleshooting is to copy the stream key from Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder when ready. Confirm the key belongs to the stream configuration you intend to broadcast; a key mismatch can prevent the encoder from connecting. Follow any additional corrective instruction shown in the Control Room. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.
- In Live Control Room, open the affected stream’s Stream view and locate Stream key.
- Copy the key and paste it into the corresponding stream-key field in your encoder.
- Start or reconnect the encoder after correcting the issue it reported.
- Wait for the preview to appear. Depending on the stream setup, click Go live in Live Control Room when prompted or required.
- Check that YouTube is receiving the feed, then review stream health again.
Do not assume that viewers’ existing players will recover automatically or that YouTube will preserve the same session after a disconnect. YouTube’s guidance does not establish universal continuity behavior for interrupted streams.

If you stream by signing in through an app
Some third-party streaming apps connect by signing in to your YouTube account rather than by asking you to enter a stream key. YouTube directs users with errors in that setup to the software provider’s support team; the app may need an update to work with YouTube Live. Reconnect and retry controls vary by app, so use its own instructions rather than looking for a universal Control Room button. YouTube’s guidance for encoder and app errors.
Reset the stream key only when needed
A key reset is not a universal fix for a network interruption or encoder fault. Use it only when you have a reason to replace the key or troubleshooting calls for it. In Live Control Room, go to Stream → Stream key → Reset, then copy the new key into the encoder before reconnecting. Resetting invalidates the prior key for this setup, so an encoder still configured with the old key will not use the replacement. Only a channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

If the stream event has ended
If the event is ended rather than merely disconnected, use the appropriate stream setup and management flow in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping content in the encoder and, in the scheduled flow, selecting End Stream. They do not establish that an ended event can always be restarted as the same session. YouTube’s encoder setup and stream workflow.
What the 12-hour guidance means for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Separately, DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These are statements about archiving and viewer rewind—not evidence that YouTube automatically stops every stream at 12 hours or imposes a universal 12-hour maximum. Before depending on an uninterrupted 24/7 channel, test how your encoder handles stream segmentation, reconnection, archives, and viewer continuity. Prevent a repeat outage
- Test before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends testing the encoder before an event and monitoring stream health and its messages while live.
- Check local recordings. Verify local archive files rather than assuming they were saved correctly.
- Test failover deliberately. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming playback rolls over to a configured backup encoder. Test this in conditions that are safe for your audience and channel.
- Choose equipment for the production need. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Hardware alone does not prevent outages or replace checking the Control Room message and matching the stream key.
