For a 720p YouTube live stream from a Raspberry Pi, configure FFmpeg for H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint. YouTube’s live guidance lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. The encoder and capture options depend on your Pi model, camera, audio source, operating system, and FFmpeg build, so there is no single reliable command for every setup.

Choose the frame rate and bitrate for 720p

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance, not its separate upload-video recommendations. For H.264 live ingestion, YouTube lists the following figures (page accessed in 2026; publication date not displayed):

Live format YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate YouTube-listed recommended video bitrate
1280 × 720 at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1280 × 720 at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are video bitrates for live ingestion, not the total upload bandwidth your internet connection must sustain. Leave capacity for audio and network variation; choose a rate your upstream connection can maintain reliably rather than setting FFmpeg to a number your connection only reaches intermittently.

720p30 or 720p60?

Choose 30 fps when the camera outputs 30 fps or less, or when the Pi cannot encode 60 fps with CPU headroom. Choose 60 fps only when the source genuinely provides it and the Pi can encode and send it consistently. A higher frame rate can make motion look smoother, but it is not an improvement if frames are dropped or the source is only 30 fps.

Check your Raspberry Pi and FFmpeg before configuring

First identify how video and audio reach the Pi: a Raspberry Pi camera, USB webcam, capture device, or another source may require different FFmpeg input options. Also confirm which operating system and FFmpeg build you have. Encoder names and device support vary; do not assume a command written for one setup will work on another.

Encoder choice by Pi generation

  • Raspberry Pi 4: Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance guidance discusses hardware encoding through h264_v4l2m2m. Use this path only if the encoder is present and usable in your installed FFmpeg build.
  • Raspberry Pi 5: The same guidance describes software H.264 encoding with libx264. Software encoding uses CPU resources, so check CPU load and dropped frames during a realistic test rather than assuming the Pi can sustain the chosen frame rate.

Check the encoders available in your installation with ffmpeg -encoders. If the encoder you intend to use is absent, install or build an FFmpeg version that supports it, or choose an available encoder appropriate for your Pi. The exact installation route depends on your operating system.

For Raspberry Pi camera capture, Raspberry Pi documents rpicam-vid and camera software at its camera software documentation. Pi 5 software encoding can have greater latency than older hardware encoders in some real-time cases; Raspberry Pi documents a rpicam-vid --low-latency option that reduces encoding latency with a coding-efficiency trade-off. Whether that option fits depends on the capture pipeline you use.

Set the YouTube live encoding parameters

In FFmpeg, match the output to these live-stream settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Video size: 1280 × 720.
  • Frame rate: 30 or 60 fps, matched to the source and Pi’s sustainable encoding capacity.
  • Video codec: H.264 is a compatibility-focused choice for common Raspberry Pi workflows. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 as accepted live video codecs; it does not require H.264 exclusively.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS is preferred; YouTube also supports RTMP.
  • Audio: use AAC or MP3. For typical SDR, YouTube’s advanced recommendations include stereo audio at 128 Kbps, progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709.

At 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to 60 frames; at 60 fps, it corresponds to 120 frames. If your encoder exposes a GOP or keyframe interval in frames, calculate it from the actual output frame rate. YouTube’s four-second maximum is a ceiling, not the target.

Build the FFmpeg command for your capture source

There is no universal copy-paste command that covers Pi camera capture, USB cameras, microphones, operating systems, and FFmpeg builds. In particular, the input arguments for a V4L2 webcam differ from those for a Raspberry Pi camera pipeline, and audio-device names are system-specific. Build the command in two parts: first confirm that FFmpeg can read your chosen video and audio inputs; then set the output encoding options and YouTube destination.

  1. Confirm the input. Use the input options required by your camera or capture device and verify that FFmpeg receives the intended 1280 × 720 image and audio. Check your device documentation and FFmpeg build for the correct input format and device name.
  2. Select a supported H.264 encoder. Use h264_v4l2m2m on a Pi 4 only if it is available and works in your build. For Pi 5, assess libx264 and CPU headroom. Do not silently substitute an encoder that your system does not support.
  3. Set output size, frame rate, rate control, and GOP. Configure 1280 × 720, the selected 30 or 60 fps rate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set a video bitrate between YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended values if your connection cannot sustain the recommended rate; ensure the chosen rate is stable.
  4. Set audio if you have an audio source. Choose AAC or MP3 and configure the input and output for your actual device. YouTube’s typical SDR advanced recommendation is 128 Kbps stereo audio.
  5. Send the output to YouTube over RTMPS. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the ingest server URL and stream key for the event. Use the RTMPS endpoint and key as FFmpeg’s output destination according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a tutorial, paste it into a public script, or include it in logs you share.

The command-line options for selecting CBR, GOP length, input devices, and RTMPS output vary with encoder and FFmpeg build. Consult the help for the encoder actually installed (for example, ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264) and verify that the resulting stream reports the intended dimensions, frame rate, and rate control. Treat examples for another Pi or camera as starting points to adapt, not as proof that the same arguments fit your hardware.

Test the Raspberry Pi FFmpeg YouTube live stream

Start a private or unlisted test broadcast before relying on the setup for a public stream. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream. Watch the preview and stream health in the Live Control Room while the Pi runs long enough to reveal overheating, CPU saturation, or network instability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the preview is 1280 × 720 and the intended frame rate.
  • Check that audio is present, synchronized, and not clipping.
  • Look for dropped frames, encoder overload, bitrate fluctuation, or stream-health warnings.
  • Repeat the test with the actual camera movement, lighting, and audio conditions expected during the stream.

FFmpeg says the encoder is unknown or unavailable

Your installed FFmpeg may not include the requested encoder, or the encoder may not work with that Pi and OS build. Run ffmpeg -encoders, select an encoder listed by your installation, and check its help output. Do not assume the Pi 4 hardware path is available on Pi 5 or vice versa.

The stream drops frames or the Pi struggles

Check CPU use, temperature, encoder errors, and the camera’s actual frame rate. On a Pi 5 using software libx264, try 30 fps instead of 60 if the CPU cannot keep up. Reduce the bitrate if the upstream connection is unstable, while staying at or above YouTube’s listed minimum for the selected 720p H.264 mode where possible. A bitrate that exceeds the reliable upload capacity can cause buffering even if the encoder itself is keeping up.

YouTube reports a keyframe or stream configuration issue

Verify that the output is using CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and that the interval is no longer than four seconds. If the GOP is specified in frames, calculate it from the actual output frame rate rather than using the same frame count at 30 and 60 fps.

The picture works but audio is missing or unsynchronized

Check that the selected audio device exists and that FFmpeg is reading it as an input. Confirm the output audio codec is AAC or MP3 and that the input sample rate and channel configuration match the device. A camera-only test may not validate a separate microphone path.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Check that the Live Control Room event is ready, the ingest URL is the one shown for that event, and the stream key has been copied correctly. Make sure the key remains private. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when available, and review YouTube’s stream-health status for connection or configuration errors.

Follow YouTube’s live and copyright rules

A working encoder does not guarantee that a broadcast is eligible to remain available. YouTube’s live guidance covers technical ingest; the channel and stream must also comply with YouTube’s policies. Use footage, music, and other material you have rights to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. Do not assume that a video being available online means it is cleared for rebroadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded video looping, rather than a live camera feed from the Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
